Hey Ram - Breaking new ground

just back from watching Hey Ram. straightaway i can say it's a must-see. the first half is simply awesome, but the second doesn't quite live up to the initial impact. highlights are of course, IR's scintillating BGM (now we know what he was talking about when he said this would be a first in Indian cinema). and it's not just violins, he's used quite a bit of percussion, synthesiser, mesmerising flute...simply magnificent.
screenplay, dialogues, song picturisation, kamal's acting (especially in certain scenes like when Rani Mukherjee is raped and murdered), cinematography, sets, editing are all top notch. rest of the cast has also done a great job, with atul kulkarni coming out with flying colours.
kudos to Kamal for such a daring attempt. wish we had more like him.

  I personally feel that Hey Ram is one of the most perfect movies to be ever made by an INdian. The screenplay is almost perfect. The photography and the art direction are really world class. What can you say about IR's BGM. It is the finest background score in any Indian movie till date. the music has completely fitted the movie. Whenever Kamal remembers Rani , IR just gives 5 seconds of the haunting and sad piano bit and that is enough to tell what is going in the protagonists mind. The songs have been utilised in the way it should be done in the movies. Most of the songs are coming in thebackground and they are not protruding out of the scene. Hats off to IR.
  we can only wish that such brave efforts by Kamal and IR to give a world class film to the Indian audience will not go to waste. And let IR continue to score music for only such meaningful and good quality films and not to nonsense movies.

  Excellent effort by Kamal and his team. I watched the Hindi version with subtitles and I really enjoyed it frame by frame.
  
  Regarding Maestro Illayaraja BGM and songs go well with the movie esp.BGM is world class. Since I watched it in IMax theatre what a visual and audio treat.
  
  I have to thank Kamal for making a movie which as close to International standard and orginal too. He never lifted scenes from any other foreign movie like other directors like Manirantnam do.
  
  Shymalan made Indian proud in Hollywood by giving
  a Sixth Sense. Kamal has made every Indian proud in India by giving Hey Ram.

  Suddenly i'm seeing so many NEW ppl here(tfm). I do not know where they came from. I also do not know where were they all hiding all this while. Suddenly they pop up & wanna try to cloud others' mind abt Raja's work & Kamal's work.

I was just referring to symbolism in movies. And I honestly did not understand why Kamal was stood facing that tornado! Honest to God! And I dont want to start guessing. The stupid IR-rasigan that I am, I let the "symbolism" of that scene go over my head and was just straining to listen to the BGM. :)

  Ayyayyo, sathiyamma ille! I would hate to be branded like that...Personally, I enjoyed a movie like Kuruthipunnal more than Hey Ram and thats because I thought that was more straight-forward. Yetho indha manasukku pettadhe solren!
  
  
  And about that bollywood review, Anjali Abrol seemed more concerned that Shahrukh had less screen-time and she made some kevalamaana statements like "Rani Mukherjee could have used more make-up".

  Technically good movie making by Kamal. Except for the "i am already liking your brother' by Gandhi. 'liking' ?? . Isn't love-making followed by one of the lovers getting killed a cliche by Hollywood standards ??
  Being an IR fan I would have preferred more opportunities for him, but the shots are packed tight. Anyways, the BGM enhances the effect without getting in the way. The movie is well-researched and detailed, starting from old AIR-INDIA posters, Pears soap daily calendar, wagons on the street and ofcourse the attire. Is our audience going to appreciate these things ?
  Already, my brother in India is telling me that some people are walking out of the theatre unable to follow the multi-lingual dialogues.
  Screen play is good but somehow I feel it fails to make an impact. I found the graphics little tame. Still this is not the run-of-the-mill movie. Completely in a different class !! Kamal deserves some pat on the back. Especially for giving importance to BGM and spending all that money for IR in Hungary.
