Pop go the classics
by Jayant Deshpande

Enter any music shop and what do you hear? Strains as varied as those of dhrupad, khayal, thumri, bhajan, ghazal, folk tunes, film songs, indipop, and, of course, Western music, classical or popular. You are more than likely to hear the sounds of the MTV generation. The lines between indigenous forms and supposedly internationalised forms are beginning to blur. It is the music young people listen to, and what most people buy. For better or for worse, we can call it, simply, popular music - or the music of most.....

GURU SHISHYA TRADITION IN THE INDIAN CULTURE
One of the most beautiful aspects of the Indian culture is the Guru-Shishya Tradition.
In this tradition, the guru holds the place next only to God. Once the guru decides to teach, he takes up the entire responsibility. The student lives with the guru and learns in a gurukul in a formal set up or with the family of the guru, in an informal one. By learning in an individual direct way from the guru, being constantly under his guidance, the student need not fear to err unknowingly. This helps him to imbibe, not just the art form, but also allows him to participate in all activities along with the guru in his everyday life.
An oral tradition demands of the shishya a high degree of patience, discipline, commitment, concentration and honesty. Generally a lot of stress is given to talent, which is not just a good voice for instance, but also the talent to understand the nuances, intricacies and importance of the discipline. The student develops a high degree of concentration. The teacher -when in the mood to teach- provides the best that he has to offer, the student’s close proximity to receive the training as and when the guru wants to impart it, helps in creating a strong bond between the two. Thus a unique feeling of respect and dedication, and gratitude starts binding Guru and Shishya and largely outlives the training period strictly speaking.
This system gives the disciple, an insight into the life, thoughts, philosophy and personality of the guru, so important in learning a discipline like classical music. The guru is the ultimate authority, his mission is to transform the talent of the student into a musical skill, and to bring him to discover and unfold his innermost riches.
