S. Janaki's contribution to TFM is tremendous! In this thread let us
trace her old songs.. in the first 20 years.. from the time of her
entry in late 1957 till 1977. S. Janaki must have sung only about 125
songs for TFM in this period. I have compiled in real audio, a selection
of these songs. Listening to the songs, one feels that TFM would have
been much richer if S. Janaki's voice had been utilized for many more
songs during this period.

Ramki:
Glad you'll enjoy the songs. Rameshb, who used to
visit this forum a lot, was the one who kept telling
me to compile this collection. I think he is in
India now.
The emotions conveyed by SJ in songs such as
unnidaththil ennaik koduththEn, mAdhA un kOyilil
and ippadiyOr thAlAttu pAdavA are simply
wonderful.
Mano:
I think you are right about the vayasu poNNu song.
I'll remove it from the list.

Is the pseum deivam song sung by sj? Sounds like LR Eswari to me. Also, the kanthan karunai song is not attributed to SJ in my HMV cassette - it ids 2 unknown singers.
BTW, there are other rare SJ songs pre-77. There are an amazing couple songs in arutperum_jothi (never released so far as I can tell - but columbiafilm.com has the vcd) picturized on a young raamalinga swamigaL. Very sweet.

Is it possible for you to encode those songs of
arutperum jOthi?
I have never heard them. :-(

sk: I've figured out how to do encoding and would be happy to do so. However, what do I do once I have the wav/mp3 file? Do I send this to you by email? I don't know how this gets to a site like swara.com. Feel free to reply by email if that's more convenient.

Wonderful! Once you encode, just send it to me by email. I will add them to the sj page. My email id
is: mpessk@guppy.mpe.nus.edu.sg
mp3 format is preferred since it will occupy much
smaller space than wav.
Thanks.

kandhan karunai song is sung by three singers
Sj,sulamangalam and Renuka. Renuka is Anuradha Shrriams mother.
SK In my opinion the best song among the 66 is 'ninaithaal podhum paaduven'. Romba highle paadi kalakkirkaanga.

on: Sun Feb 18 18:11:00 EST 2001
sk,
"ninaithaal pOdhum" is toooo fast! And that's why it also sounds "super" high pitched! Ofcourse, it's a very high pitched song no doubt!
Unga intro-la enakku innonnu puriyala sk:
"TFM would have been much richer if S. Janaki's voice had been utilized for many more songs during this period".
Do you mean that tfm must have produced even more no. of songs? Or that some/many of the songs sung by other singers could have been given to SJ? If it's the latter then the only singer that comes to my mind is PS and I sincerely think that SJ could not have sung any of PS' songs better. Nor do I think that PS (or yester years)has ever made us think that "she could have sung this song even better" about any of her songs!
(romba naaL aachu sk yaaraiyum vambukku izhuthu adhaan! Take care.)

SK forgot to add this:
In avargaL 'ganaiyile neer perugi' is a seperate song. Indha song mudinjadhum thaan Anu will meet Bharani . 'ippadi oru thalattu' will come later. Do you know who played the flute in these songs??It is so good.
In 'avaLukkendror manam' there is another song by SJ for Bharathi. It is a kind of devotional song.
Do you have that song with you?

Ramki & Karthi:
I am sorry for the delayed replies. I was very busy the last few days.
Ramki:
As Karthi says ninaiththAl pOdhum pAduvEn's
recording that I have is a bit speedy and noisy too!
It is a great song though. SJ has done full justice to it.
I know the avaLukkendru Or manam song, but I don't
have it.
Karthi:
indha vambu pEchchu avasiyamA?:-))
I was listening to all
the SJ songs I had collected. Right from malarOdu
viLaiyAdum and thennangkeetru oonjalilE
to mAdhA un kOyilil most of the songs
(especially the solos) impressed me very very much.
SJ is definitely a very expressive singer with a
special attractive voice tone. This is in absolute
terms. (Let us not make comparisons with PS
or anyone please.) Then when I started making a
list of all her songs in the first 20 years, it
didn't even reach 100. My estimate of 125 was on
the high side. This is only about 5 songs per year for
the great singer! That looked too small to me and
hence I made that comment. I did not have any other
thing in mind.
KK has sent me some songs which I will be making
available soon on my page. For now, listen to this
beautiful song..
http://guppy.mpe.nus.edu.sg/~mpessk/sj/varuvaan.mp3
Sivaji & Co had the bad musical sense not to include this
song in the movie (ponnoonjal). Note the shrillness
when SJ sings pon muththu mEni peNNendru solla.
Isn't it lovely?

Does anyone have veenai meettum kaigaLE (maalai sooda vaa) and maniosaiyum kaivaLaiosaiyum aanandha raagam paada naan kEtkiREn?
There are a couple sj songs in pandhapaasam (1962, VR) - a tms duet which is nice and a ps-sj duet where sj's voice sounds too thin. Don't know if this is a sound defect?
I located aadi varum aadakap poRpaavaiyadi nee which someone had asked about a while back - not very good lyricswise and the sound quality isn't great either.

Is it true that S Janaki sang only 125 songs for TFM in 20 years. What a pity!!!!!!!!!!
But she was the queen of our Kannada film music. She also excelled in the Malayalam,Telugu and Oriya film industry I think.

on: Wed Jun 13 05:39:29 EDT 2001
xyz,
She was popular in Malayalam. I don't know about Oriya. In Kannada she was popular from 70s. Both SJ and VJ were very popular during 70s and 80s. In 90s, Kannada singers started dominating the KFM. Before 70s KFM was dominated by popular female singers of TFM. L.R.Eswari was also very popular upto early 80s. In TeluguFM, PSuseela was dominating even in 80s. Later 70s and 80s have good contribution of SJ and VJ. Then Chitra and swarnalatha entered one by one. We know the present status very well. SJ was the queen in MalayalamFM.

PS was dominating in TeluguFM till early
90s. I remember a film PremaKhaidi in Telugu (made in Hindi too - Karisma Kapoor's debut film) where all but one songs are sung by PS/SPB. I think, PS is unique in her achievement. I know
from my friends PS was popular in Kannada too till
70s. SJ was more singing disco numbers and of course very good songs in IR's/KVM's music in 1970s/1980s.
