Vairamuthu anytime! Why? I prefer diamonds and pearls to a mere pail!

Both Vairamuthu and Vaali are talented.
Both will write crap to make a living.
Vaali has numerous classics from MGR's era where most of the credit must go to MGR's tough criticism and penchant for making Vaali rewrite things until they were fresh. As much as I detest Vaali for his English tinged nonsensical lyrics and outright smutty songs like (eppadi eppadi samanjatheppadi), he has given us songs from Padagoatti, Panam Padaithavan, Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban, and Vaazhvae Maayam among others. I hate Vaali for deeming TFM as a lesser art form and giving his least attention to their lyrics(he himself admitted several times that he only respects what he writes for print). Oru padaippaali endraal padaippathu athanaiyum gouravathudan padaikkavendum enbathu en kolgai.
Kannadhaasan endraikkumae thanathu kavidhaigalai paathiram paarthu pichai ittathillai.
Vairamuthu also gives us bonafide classics now and then. Again, when he first entered TFM, he gave TFM a face lift with his pudhukavidhai. Almost 80% of his songs were good in his first 3 years. Then, his attitude changed and so did his style when he began a formula of itemizing and listing parables instead of writing free-form lyrics.
I wish we had a healthy competition among poets so no one gets to feel that his words are indispensable. Why haven't good poets like Mu.Mehta, Muthulingam, Piraisoodan, Kuruvikarambai Shanmugam, or Pulamaipithan got their due in today's TFM is beyond me. It's also a shame that so many female poets never got into TFM.

Vaali has few other good ones too.
Kaana Kaanum... Agni Saatchi
Naan Unnai Ninai.. Kannil Therium KathaiKal
I wouldn't doubt the creativeness of Vaali. He has the good character too. Well, you may ask that what does the character got to do with the TFM. It counts too. Take for example, Mettu Poodu... You can visulize that VM tells his success with ARR. Vaali has never done that as far as I know. Vaali repeatedly told the reporters that he is writing for money. He has to live too?
Do you know the story behind M.Metha? He is having very tough time financially. It seems no one is bothered about that?

Sad to hear about Mehta, Mano. Maybe he should have stuck to his guns and stayed in publishing. I remember he produced a movie, it probably bombed. Anyway, I won't digress anymore.

I have read M.Metha's old 'Kavithai Thokupu.'
Those are:
Kanneer Pookal
UrKoolam..
If you get a chance, read those. They are really good piece of writing.

On the topic of Vaali, would anyone know why he has written fewer lyrics for films in the last two years - 1996 and 1997 - than in 1995 or before? How is he doing this year?. I notice that recent movies with Ilayaraja's music do not feature his lyrics. As a fan of Vaali, I am most interested to know. I was taken in with the songs he wrote for movies in the 60's and 70's which left a lasting impression on me. That he can survive 40 years in the Tamil film industry is truly a great achievement.
Recently I had a chance to read his book, "Naanum Intha Noothandrum" published in late 1995. I was most impressed with his writing - a style which made me want to read more! He mentions numerous events and characters that he had acquaintance with since the 50's, in a story-telling style which was arresting.

While on the subject of lyricists, a comment about the lyrics themselves: Earlier, if there were songs in a film, they used to denote a development in the story by refering to earlier incidents. You got the feeling that the entire film's story was told to the lyricist before he wrote the songs, thereby enabling him to incorporate themes from different points in the story.
Now, I feel that lyrics are more situation oriented. While listening to a most love songs today, I feel the directions given to the lyricist are: "Love situation... hero heroine duet... dance varaa maadhiri paattu podunga" or some equally generic nonsense.
Maybe that is why talented lyricists like VM and Vaali come out with nonsense. After all, how many "generic love situations" can one write beautiful lyrics to? Also, the number of films produces annually has increased exponentially, probably giving lyricists a tougher time.
Also, some lyrics today are written for no other discernable reason than to just be catchy. I mean, in Indhiyan, Manisha telephone manipol treeng-treeng ena sirithaal Kamal kandippaga avrkitte joke edhuvam sollave maattaar:--). And what the hell is a Melbourne malar anyway? And aayiram porkaasugal parisu to anyone who can guess exactly which part of Manisha's anatomy corresponds to Zakir Hussain's tabla???
Of course, one could also argue that if Kannadhaasan did not pander, why should they... Yet there is no denying that VM's early poetry was really remarkable.

Bharat(I got your name right this time), I agree with your assessment about songs that don't relate to the movie situations in recent years. I have even heard distressing news that some company was planning to create a tune bank for song categories, such as sad love songs, happy love songs, dance songs, etc., which movie producers and directors could sample and buy. If that were to happen, I think TFM will be robbed of what little creativity exists in lyrics.

Mano, I have read the two books by Mehtha you mentioned and also a book he released which contained all the prologues he wrote in promoting other poets. I have also seen him on stage, he is awesome. His vernacular is much broader, deeper, and more profound than most working TFM poets today.

Did Vaali write "Valaiosai galagala vena kavidhaigal padikkudhu" in Sathya (Kamal starrer )?

Vaali is a good lyricist. He wrote useless songs too. He was totally overshadowed by Kannadasan. Then after Kannadasan's demise, VM grabed the opportunity and Vaali was left behind. VM mixed and changed the way songs are written and he made money. Vaali also has to make money. If he is not changed to VM's style, he would have struggled meet his basic needs.
Maduraiyil piranda meenkodiyai from Poova Thalaiya is a pretty good song.
Vaali is a much better poet than VM even though none of them can be compared to great Kannadasan.
I agree, writing song is to do with an attitute. Probably, MGR was demanding to give him a better song.
His Chinna Kannan Azhaikkiran by S.Janaki is a beautiful song.

karthik, Vaali has penned all the songs in Satya.
He is a great lyricist. The KB, VKumar and Vaali combination was too good.

you can never and ever 'bucket' with the greatest
poet.vali has written very few love songs like
'sundari kannal oru sedhi' in thalapathi.that;s
why still we consider vaali as a lyricist, but not a poet forever.
THERE IS ONLY ONE SUN.
THERE IS ONLY ONEMOON.
THERE IS ONLY ONE KAVIPPERARASU.
THAT'S 'VAIRAMUTHU.VAIRAMUTHU.VAIRAMUTHU.
