Madhan, fan and folks,
I am glad this arguement is going decently without any adithadi.Romba naallachu!
I remember once IR saying this
in an interview
"customer yetha mathiri thaan
taylor has to stitch the
shirt. customer cannot fit according
to the taylor's stitching."
he was saying this when he was
asked for tune'kku lyrics'aa or lyrics'kku
tune'aa endru.
athay mathiri IR has to give what people
wants now. Ofcourse we all prefer
short cuts in life.Noone will be ready to
spend several months to learn C++ and get
a job when there are couple of week's fast
courses.
This is a fast world we got to blend in.
Or else we will be left behind. That is what
is happening to IR. He couldn't blend in
to the changes.
my humble suggestion would be for him is to
stop giving music to crap movies.
And ofcourse definetely not his original style
of 80's or whatever.
I strongly believe that that style won't be much
appreciated NOW.
Arul,
IR's songs in malayalam are good.but i guess still Vidyasagar or some other Malayala MD is leading the industry over there. IF IR is really good in that language then he should be mostly
sought after.
MS,
Believe it or not....this discussion can go on
and on and on....still alukka villai. :-)
Evalvu duet parkareenga. are you getting fed up
with it? It is still capturing your attention. isn't it?

gOkul,
thanks. i dunno how i missed that one :-))
fan,
are you still here. i heard you were taking a long break :-) even before your suggesting, i asked quite a few people to "contribute" but for reasons best known to them no one has replied yet. added to that there were only two responses so far to the excellent article written by hari govindan, eventhough we get around 10000 hits a day (that's not an exaggeration). obviously, hari might be thinking hard (or hardly!) about his next article.
and about news: we are at liberty to say only what iLayarAja wants us to! (that shouldn't be too difficult to understand :-) ).
hi all,
have a nice discussion. see you all later (maybe).

I would request IR's official fans website to write about his musical scores and arrangements.
Srikanth,
Yes, I would be very interested in knowing those too. I would want to know how the arrangements vary from a type of song to another (e.g. a Sundari kaNNAl oru seidhi or an aruNa kiraNa deepam)

Arul sir
I am still around! :),
I think you have a good team of youngesters, I am sure you will find a "real time" web developer among them. 10,000 a day is a good number.
still the Site needs some professional help.
The reason I mentioned it here was:
I told about our man to few good classical composers I know here, I gave them
"poove sempoove" and "iravu nilavu" .
(why this two songs --- IMHO two are simply the greatest arrangments)
they were impressed and were curious to know about him, they found "ra'm.com" themselves and later told me.
"this site needs some professional help".
one of themn tells me he came to know about the fans rather than the composer himself.
If Ir wants these news, it can be served in a professional fashion. Check unni's site or sudha ragunathas site or balamurali krishnas site they have been built very well.

Krishna,
Thanks for pointing out the double standards
that exist in this forum when analysing IR and
other MDs. People seem to criticize IR in all
possible ways now in this forum(in fact someone was happy that Panju Arunachalam chose YSR for his new movie as according to that friend, IR is not popular). Also I think you have given an apt
reply to Viswa who was asking people about why
they like IR's music (Individual music taste
is highly subjective and can't be categorised).
Just wondering whether anyone tried criticizing ARR in his new albums thread.
I doubt it as it will be a very bad experience
for whoever does it (going by past experience) Just using the same yard stick for all the MDs as people always argue for in this forum which they apply only for the MDs other than IR.

Athi, you just make me laugh,
If you remember,
MS pointed out few links to you where "arr being taken for a ride" by many.
You were missing after that for couple of months.
Might be you had been to India on vacation. I dont question that.
Again you have started your Paranoia, you remind of xfiles Moulder who always claims
it is out there - they are out there...etc etc:)
IMHO:
Basically We are not bothred much if "billa" and "ranga" does some act , we dont critize them much,
if some person like "kapildev" commits the same act, it is always projected very high.
Hope you understand.
:)

Arul:
I totally agree with your previous posting and i feel exactly the same. I am also addicted to songs from Raja's new movies like karuvelam Pookal (there are three songs one by Bhave, one by Ir and the other by Sujatha that are out of the world), Poonthottam (iniya malargal),Nilave Mugam kattu, Annan, kadavul(I love 'Kovilukkul" song along with the nagamani song that you mentioned), Kannukul Nilavu (Nilavu pattu and the chithra songs are my favorites), Raman Abdullah (pudhhiday ketkum, Muthamizhe), Kaakai Chiraginile, Hey Ram, the "Bharani" song, Tirunelveli (Have you listened to the "kattazhagi" song), Time, Ilayavan, KUT, KKP and Bharathy now (it is on auto reverse and play all the time in my car...I've listened to it over 30 times already). And I feel the same ...the orchestration is very sophisticated in his songs...the composition of the songs are great..the tunes are complex and keeps haunting me. Add to this list songs from Punniyavathi, Pooncholai, desiya geetham etc.
I have always felt that if this is the output from a person on the decline, God bless me with such talent.
Arul, thank IR for providing continuous pleasure to our families.

Thanks for your words. If I were you, I would not waste time on getting to a war of words. I enjoy your posting and your opinions on IR's music. There are going to be others who might not agree with our opinions. If I were you, I will not waste my time trying to convince them otherwise. I don't think we are going to change anyone's opinion by our postings or vice-versa or any of these things can affect the genius of IR.
Continue with you positive postings and I am impressed with your passion for IR's music.

"IF IR is really good in that language then he should be mostly
sought after."...
Bug,
IR is definitely good in Mallu. Vidyasagar might be sought after because he has noo market in Tamil and has all the time to concentrate in mallu movies plus he does more than a decent job. But IR is taking up projects in 3 or 4 languages plus he is not taking that many movies these days. But his music in Malayalam still bears his stamp.
Someone said here that IR set the trend in 70s, then in 80s he changes his style and set a different trend and so on. I believe that he still sets trends in mauul movies. u can perhaps call it the y2k trend from IR;) if u want to. but IR just keeps setting trends. i think lack of appreciation is one factor that can prevent IR from getting to score more albums like Guru.
IR should have won a national award for that movie album. Or atleast he should have ben recognised at the state level. But that was not so. it must have been really disappointing for him to see that.(not that he hasnt been dissapointed before) i believe that was the best album to come out in the 90s. perhaps the best in tamil and mallu to come out in that decade in terms of orchestration. Man of the match, Friends and recently even Kochu Kochu santhoshangal have atleast one or two great songs.
In tamil as srikanth said it might be a combo of factors. lack of enthu, pressure from the producers to use new singers(who cannot pronounce words properly in tamil) as well as synth based fast numbers and loss of some important members from his group along with his serious financial losses in recent times have all taken a toll on his compositions. its really a combination of factors. i feel these pressures are a little bit less in mallu movies. the trend there is not the fast pop-based numbers that are in vogue in TFM. but rather audiences there still have an ear for slow melodies and i believe IR is being given full liberty to do whatever he wants. and it also helps that he works in decent movies there most of the time.

Hi all!
Age & experience has set in a kind of mature albeit slow kind of flow of music from IR nowadays, IMHO! The apt illustration that comes to my mind is the phases of a great river, starting from its source till it merges with a ocean!
To me `machchana' `kEttElE' `sendhoorappoovE' & `vizhiyilE' are songs that resemble the phase in which the river (or streams) jump among the hills in a torrent, ever youthful and vibrant...it reached a steady and consistent flow upon reaching the plains...like during the time of Nizhalgal to Vaidhehi K to Punnagai mannan...sometimes even taking in some of the pollution created by the environ and absorbing...by the time it reached the Guru / KM / TIME phase it is broader, slow and mature...all IMHO
Raja songs of late nineties have a subtle tone of melancholy rather than `thuLLal', even in the case of songs for joyous occasions...may be it's mine alone, but `ennai thAlAtta varuvAlO' evokes somewhat sad emotions within me, especially the interludes...same with `iravu pagalaiththEda' & `rOja poonthOttam'...
I would prefer not to rate any phase greater than the other, each one had its impact on us...but one thing is 100% sure, his music always played with one's deep emotions! Man, what a composer! It takes a lot to achieve that!
One of my relatives, who normally does not talk much about music at all (and neither a proclaimed admirer of any MD), was with me in a video bus when they screened `vAnaththa pOla' which had one of the most atrocious BGMs ever; Irritated, he made a remark, these fellows should learn to score music from IR, referring to Sethu! The point is, Raja's music plays always with inner emotions and in his recent phase, it succeeds evoking SADNESS!
In the current context, I agree evoking sad emotions is not a right way to sell things, but then immediately I strongly feel most of us are not qualified to tell IR what to do and what not to do in MUSIC:-)) Let him do what naturally comes to him and let's listen to what strikes the right cords of individual's tastes and emotions !
