I haven't heard anybody mention or discuss Raja's score for Avatharam. The score is overall good but there are two songs in the movie which are really great.
Chandrirarum Sooriyarum - a superb melody with a baroque style orchestration. There is a long interlude which is really brilliant.
Thendral Vandhu - a beautiful song (the scene which leads to this song in the movie is a tender one - Nasser and Revathy discover their love for each other but it is not revealed openly. You have to read between the lines - so to speak).
After the first pallavi, the orchestra comes to a stop and and a new melody is introduced by a solo violin (?) and the orchestra joins in. Whenever I listen to this it sends a shiver up my spine !
There is a parallel to this in Beethoven's 5th symphony. The last movement. The orchestra comes to a stop and a string instrument (bass ?) introduces a variation of the theme with the orchestra subsequently joining in for a finale crescendo.
Both Raja's song and Beethoven's final movement for 5th symphony are sensational.

"thenDral vandhu thEEndumpOdhu" is a great song which is very unique with his own voice. "Arithaaraththa pOOsikkoLLa" and "Oru kuNdumani" are good songs too. Raaja's voice perfectly matched for Nasar.

Katrhik Raja, iN one of his interviews mentioned
that he did the music score for Thendral vandhu.
But couldnt believe this statement after listening
to Ullasam or Alexander

Karthik Raaja mentioned that he did the orchestration for this song. He mentioned that the interlude he made (for the gushing colors from the
fountain shots) was appreciated by his dad.
The tune for this song looks none other than Maestro himself.

I was sad that none spoke about Avathaaram and especially "Thendral Vandhu" in the recent past. Now I am just happy!! You listen to the song and you get to the so called "high". The percussion in the background in this song is just
magnificent !!! Naaser has done his best to picturise this song adding vibrancy with colors. I want to know this !! How on earth is the Raaja getting such tunes ? Oh!!

As for as song picturisation is concerned "thenRal vandhu" was one of the best ever I have seen in recent years. A perfect match of "oLiyum oliyum" Hats off to Raaja and Naaser.

'Thendral Vanthu' is a classic Karthik Raja's arrangement. If you were to compare this song with his arrangement for 'Pandiyanin Rajathil' and other early pieces, you can distinguish the difference. The melody line is undeniably Raja's.
I wish to add that this is my opinion and is based on my experience in the field of distinguishing arrangements and harmonization.

Avatharam is excellent with the unique melody of thendral vandhu which is like a peacful sailing in a calm ocean and gazing the twilight.
I would also like to add picturisation and presentantion of the song "oru naal" from his next movie Devathai. Whenever I listen to this one I feel enthralled like I was physically and emotionally present in that flow of love which is beautifully sculptured by Ilayaraja and presented in one of the best ways by nasser.

THE SONG "Thenral vandhu theendumpodu" IN AVATHARAM HAD BEEN ORIGINALLY SET IN CLASSICAL
CARNATIC BASE - IN THE RAGAM "JONPURI" - a wonderful master-piece of our MAESTERO - ILAYARAJA
All of us can simply sit tight in hearing this
excellent renderance by our I.R. ably supported by
our S.Janaki- You can compare the setting of this
tune with "KALYANA MAALAI KONDADUM PENNEY" IN THE
FILM PUDU PUDU ARTHANGAL, again set in the Raga
JONPURI. It really makes me ecstatic that I happen
to be in the contemporary period of this great
MUSIC DIRECTOR THE UNSURMOUNTABLE, IMPECCABLE
AND EVERGREEN RAGA DEVAN , THE GREATEST ILAYARAJA!
