The role of music editors, programmers and engineers in TFM

While listening to TI and DDD by YSR and KR and recently ARR's Lagaan...and after reading Ranjit Barot's interview (link posted by bm in "What happened to RB....?" thread)...I couldn't help noticing the perflect splicing together of voices and tracks..of course the MD doesn't have time to go into all the details...so can the "know-hows" share with us "know-nots" how the whole thing works and also tell us what the role of the MD is going to be in this century ?
