Why do MDs copy?

Recently I was listening to a song (Poo Virinjachu) from the movie 'Mugavari' by Deva. I was stunned to see that, this song was an exact copy of 'That thing you do' by 'One hit Oneders'.

My question is, Deva seems to be a nice and God Fearing person. Do MDs like him copy just because they ran out of tunes or because of pressures from producers/directors?

  Well, I suppose it's not possible to come out with anything 100 PERCENT original. MDs may inadvertantly copy each other's works.
  On second thought, if something good comes out, everyone wants to copy it so that they can claim it theirs.

  Deva is a God fearing person coz his mother had told a story during Deva's childhood days that if we steal(abase,Suttukinu,loutikinu) something from somebody else God will punish(Night thungunmbothu vanthu kanna kuthidum) you.So as long as Deva copies he will be a God fearing person.:-)
  Dont ask me why ARR and IR were also God fearing..:-)

  ARR and IR are not just God-fearing.
  They are actually Deva-Fearing, and believe me, the fear is real. :)

  Copying is pressure which MDs have to live with. I personally feel that the top MDs like ARR and IR have the freedom to give their own music whereas others live under the pressure of "delivering". Which is why u find least instances of lifting from the above ppl. However, it must be said that it is a diferent ball game in HFm where every MD tries to be the first in lifting.......which is why we have had 7 versions of Mukkala Mukkabla....
  
  MDs like nadeem-shravan and Anand milind have made a fortune lifting Tamil, Western asian and Pakistani songs......The less said about Anu Malik, the better........I always feel that the National Award to him is a disgrace to the award in itself........

  Mani Sharma does Deva s erstwhile job better!

  Asi read in one interview ,the producer asks the producer asks the MD to copy a song ..Otherwise how can u explain Ullathai alli tha songs -al the 6 songs are bit by bit copies !!!!!
  
  That's why songs of big MDs are orginal ...

  All those tamil mds who copy will be sued by american music companies. Then tfm will go out of business. All tfm mds are copycats. Only Ilayraja makes own music. But he is too old.

  american companies won't sue tfm. it's too much trouble -- you'd have to prove copying in an INDIAN court, and the settlement would have to be divided by fifty anyway (Rs. 50 = $1.00). many americans already KNOW they've been copied -- they just figure, "it's a different market, doesn't hurt us, it's okay." That's what I'm told director Jonathan Lynn (who directed "The Whole Nine Yards") said when he found out it had been remade in Hindi as "Awaraa Pagalaa Deewaanaa."
  
  so indians have carte blanche to copy.
  
  so there will be no originality.
