Falsetto - (Male) Voice singing in an upper register beyond its normal range.
- Falsetto - Falsetto is the maximal elongation of vocal cords with minimal glottic gap. It can be produced at almost any frequency, but is mostly produced in the upper range for both male and female voices. Falsetto was originally called "false voice" because of the use of castrates (castrated males) when women were not allowed to sing in churches.
What do you guys think about Falsetto singing ?
There are countless artists who try Falsetto singing in English pop, rock circuit. The most famous examples being Michael Jackson, George Michael, Justin Timberlake, Steve Wonder..
And we have our own Kishore Kumar, SPB who have done it many a time in Indian films.
A few instances from Mano , Shankar Mahadevan ..
Even Unnikrishnan said before that did it once for Ivan Yaaro.. song in Minnale during the interlude where he sings the bit 'Parappa pa pa pa..'
I believe that it takes some real vocal talent with a special styling to do it and make it sound pleasant without going overboard.
Do you guys know of any TFM songs where there are instances of Falsetto singing ? Do you know of any artists who does it with aplomb ?

Other instanes where you find Falsetto is our own Vedic chants by priests when they had to chant those mantras at the top of their pitches. One more example is our very own folk songs especially the sad ones.

It is very rare to find Falsetto among female singers (dont tell me thats their usual singing style).
Jogging Seyyum (Punnagai Poove) has a little attempt of it though you cannot call it the texbook definition of Falsetto . BTW, who was that singer ?

Yeah. Even I have heard that song from PP before. She has got a good stylized western voice.
Any more songs on falsetto - male or female.

Let me think... It is tough to find Falsetto instances in TFM. I can tell you countless songs in English. Craig David has got a very good Falsetto . Justin Timberlake too was nt that abd either in his Like I Love You

Have you noticed that among the current singers, Sonu Nigam is the one does it more often than anyone. I think he has got a fancy for it. He tries it in almost all fast paced songs. Oh Maama in RHTDM is one for example.

Can you call SPB's 'Maanoothu Manthaiyila...' from Kizhakku Chemmaiyila as Falsetto ?

Yeah. that can be called Falsetto.
Nettru Munniravil ... piece in Snehithane by srinivas. Falsetto ?

on: Fri Jan 10 15:46:54 EST 2003
Yeah..quite possible. But was it Srinivas alone ? With ARR, you can never tell. He could have even used all the gizmo stuff he has to make real singing sound like Falsetto.

Hey..I like you from Citizen - Vasundhara Das when she starts off the song she is clearly Falsetto-ing and carries on for most part of the song. But I guess her voice is more comfortable with that kind of hi-pitched singing which make it sound like Falsetto.
So you see.. we can also do Falsetto !!! we can do whatever you guys can do !!

mav & cou,
"Voice singing in an upper register beyond its normal range. "...
does it mean 'Kamban engu ponan shelly enna annan' from jathi mallai & 'nila kaayum neram salanam' in chembaruthi fall under that category?

Thiru
I am not so sure about 'Kamban Yengu Ponaan' coz I havent heard that one completely. But I dont see 'Nila Kaayum' from Chemabaruthi as Falsetto. What makes you think so ?

Oorvasi Oorvasi - first 35 secs when ARR starts off that sounds like a typical Mosque prayer singing . That goes in hi registers in false voice . In the same song, Suresh Peters in the interludes has this 'ooh ooh ooh..' BG chorus going in falsetto. This song has a lot of such singing.

"geetham sangeetham" had shades of SPB's falsetto...a feminine touch irukkum..
"sangeetha jaathi mullai" intro aalapanai by SPB..
Many Janaki high pitch songs..in "konjam sangeetham katru thaa" she goes keechu keechu in saranam..
hariharan most goes falsetto if its high pitch..

I am a twenty-five year old female singer with a falsetto voice. It is a gift because it makes my singing unique but a problem because few female songs are right for my voice. I also am not sure how to keep my vocals under control when the yodeling tries to slip in and keep my voice sounding strong at the same time.I cannot find anyone who is trained in giving lessons to my type of voice. I want to show off that I am different and keep a quality sound. Does anyone know where I can find help?

Cougar/Maverick, you are confusing high pitch with falsetto. Female singers in tamil film music sing falsetto all the time (example S Janaki). Saregamamix gave the right examples.

would you classify "athini chitini" from Thenali and Hariharn's singing in the mid sectionofthe song falsetto ?
one of te not so nice moments in falsetto ( for me anyway) is in the tamil version of Taal of song Nahi samne (excuse my hindi !)
in tamil I think it was "Kalaimaane", in the intoduction fo the songs when Harihaarn holds that long note "kadhaliyeeee...", it worked really well in Hindi but in the tamil version it just didn't sound right.
