I think P Susheela sang only a very few songs for
Ilayaraja. What was the reason for this? The
only songs that I can recollect are:

1. Sondhamillai bandhamillai - Annakkili
2. kannan oru kaikuzhandhai - Bathrakaali
3. thenil aadum roja - Avar Enakke Sondham
(a beautiful song)
4. andhi mazhai megam - Nayagan
5. en kanmani en kaadhali - Chittukkuruvi

Are there many more?

My opinion:
Susheela's singing, though very sweet to listen to, sounds
monotonous at times. Janaki is a more versatile singer.
I doubt if Susheela could ever have sung songs like "varuthu
varuthu", "malare mounamaa".
I think Ilayaraja used SPB, Janaki predominantly, to project
a style of his own. Otherwise he would've been branded
as another clone. In TMS' case, it could've been ego struggle.

There is a nice song in Keladi Kanmani. Cant
recollect the words.

There is one which goes like
" Manadile Oru Paatu Mazhai varum adai kettu"
Dont remember the movie. It is a great song.

Do you guys find the singer Sandhya's voice is
very similar to PS. Sandhya has sung a song in
Devadai.

Hey guys what am I hearing; Janaki is more versatile than Susheela? I think both are equally competent singers. If you still doubt this listen to an old song by Susheela. It is 'Siripil undagum ragathiley pirakum sangeethame'. It is extremely difficult to duplicate this song.
Moreover, if you consider sweetness definitely Susheela wins. IR knew this and gave her some of his best compositions which became hits invariably.

2. Poonkaviyam, pesum oviyam... by chitra, Yesudas and Susheela in karpoora mulai.
3. Arumbarumba saramthodutha azhagu malar maalai idhu, aaa raa row.... a beatiful song in Mayamalavagowlai in a little known movie.
4. Arumbagi motagi poovagi, poopola ponana poovayee.... another wonderful song by Susheela and Deepan Chakravarty in the Raga Charukesi. Wow! God bless Raja.

PS is no way near SJ - sorry for this statement. True that PS is a great singstress. 'sittuk kuruvi muththam koduththu', 'saravaNap poigayil neeraadi', 'unnai naan sandhiththEn', are alltime greats. But in most of her recent songs, her rendering has been so bad and her voice too has deteriorated so badly. Eg. 'muththu maNi maalai', 'poo pookkum maasam' etc.

All songs after 'varam thandha saamikku' were good to hear because of the excellent tune, composing and the accompanying singer (which was SPB in most cases).

But SJ is SJ. I am sure SJ is even elder to PS, though not a senior. But her voice is still so young and enthusiastic. Listen to 'oru naaL andha oru naaL' from dhEvadhai - lilting number. Her rendering in the duets need special mention. SPB himself says that he had found it difficult when singing with SJ. Her voice modulation in 'aattukutti muttai ittu', 'kaNNaa nee engE', 'adhikaalai nEramE', 'inji iduppazhagaa' are unparelleled. But a jewel in the crown would be 'karavai maadu mooNu' from 'magaLeer mattum'. The has sung for Revathi, Urvashi and Rohini in three different voices - mind boggling.

BTW, the singer Sandhya mentioned by Gokul has already sung a song in iruvar. (poongkodiyin punnagai). She is the DIL of PS!!.

One more thing. Let us not think what SJ is to PS is what SPB is to KJY. The difference between PS & SJ surfaced only during the past decade. And moreover PS is a great singstressby absolute standards.

On the other hand, KJY is no comparisn to SPB. Even by absolute standards KJY is a very ordinary singer with a magnificient voice. He excels only in songs like 'mahaa gaNapathim', 'aadal kalaiyE' etc. I cannot recall more than 50 good songs of him

SPB is a genius. He beats KJY all ends up. Though his voice is not as 'gambeeram' as KJY, he excels in everything else.

I like PS's Voice very much though i would say
it's nowhere upto SJ's level - my all time fav.

But then there is this excellent and totally different song by PS " Aadum Neram ithu Thaan " in Soorasamhaaram - a style that is very different from her usual. a cool tune by IR . This movie had some great songs ( Naan enbathu , Neela kuyile etc). a great catchy tune by IR.

another case is some Ramarajan's (?kaaran) movie in which all songs were by PS - a great set of songs. (Arumbaagi , Aasaiyile paathi etc..) - sometimes it surprises when IR assigns all songs in a movie to one female PB singer - The above movie songs were a big hit and when i started listening to the songs expecting a SJ number ,
it turned out to be all PS and great ones too.

There is an excellent song by PS in "thunaiyiruppAl meenatchi" (1977 film):

"sugamO aayiram..uRavO kaaviyam.."

I have read somewhere that the tune for this song was (the FIRST ever tune by IR for TFM) first set for "annakkili unnai theduthe.." of Annakkili but was not approved by Panju Arunachalam. Then IR used the same (rejected) tune for this (thunaiyiruppal meenaatchi) film, for which the producer was (again) Panju Arunachalam..!

I wonder why IR didn't use SJ for many of his carnatic based songs. BTW SJ's rendering of balakangamaye from Salangai oli is horrible.

There is no doubt in the fact that PS has a better voice than SJ. SJ's shrill voice is irritating in many songs. But SJ's versatility, value additions are unparelleled. I am more impressed with the way of singing than with the voice.

I have heard 'ammamma...'. I think it is from veNNiRa aadai. It is a lovely song. I do like PS very much. But in the past 7-8 years, her voice is unhearable.

I cannot comment on SJ's rendering in 'baalakanakamaya' as I do not understand Telugu.

engada post-paNNi 4 naaL aachu.. namma Aravind-i kaNomennu paaththen. I agree with your assessment; I myself don't enjoy PS's recent (7 - 8 years) songs.( It is like watching Vishwanath playing his last test series in Pak).
But unlike you I 'm more impressed with the quality of the voice.

LR Eswari sang one song with TMS for Ilayraja. I think the movie was 'Nallathoru Kudumbam'. I dont remember the song.
By the way, do you really like LR Easwari's voice? If so, I am surprised. She can't even pronounce one word 'naturally'. No wonder why IR didn't give her any chance.

I think both PS and SJ are great singers in their own right. It is very difficult and unfair to compare both of them. Each possess certain qualities the other doesn't have. Like wise I take great offence in Aravind's comments that KJY is only an ordinary singer with a magnificiant voice. I think KJY is an execptional singer with a divine voice. I refuse to compare him with SPB who is a superb singer in his own right, and insult both these hugely talented singers.

I think P Susheel is the best among the lady singers of Raja. For instance, how Raja gave that great song " Kettale Angey...Vango Nna".

For one thing, that is the best street song after MSV's Yennadi Rakkamma, I have heard in years. Vango Anna, Ada Vango NNa' When Susheela brings out that playfulness in that refrain is what makes that song an immortal one.

There are several P Susheela duets that are just out of this millenium. Nadiyoram Neeyum Naanum, Noolidai, etc. from Annai Oru Aalayam; "kaathodu Poovurasa" and the other solo from Anbukku Naan Adimai' Ada ada veyer enna than sollarathu...

Long live Raja and P Susheela.
