  It has been a 'maya' for Karthik
  It has been a prolific year for him. From a chorus singer to one of the leading names in the film industry, it has come a full circle for Karthik. The young man, blessed with a good voice has climbed the popularity charts, coming up with one hit number after the other.
  
  It all started with Maya, Maya in Baba (a Rajni-starrer) and he has not looked back since. In between he has raked up hits like Moondrezhuthu Ketta (Parthalae Paravasam), Oliyilae (Azhagi), Theradi Veedhiyil (Run), to name a few. He is now counted as one of the best in the industry and has already worked with leading music directors.
  
  In a chat with M Bharat Kumar, Karthik, shares his views on the Tamil film music industry, western influence and role models.
  
  Q: How did it all begin?
  
  A: I was a chorus singer for A R Rehman for a few years. He asked me to sing the track for Maya Maya song in Baba. Attracted by my voice, he gave me an opportunity to sing it ultimately. It was indeed a dream come true for me. Thanks to Rehman, my life took a new turn and today I am a successful playback singer.
  
  Q: Were you thrilled to sing for Rajnikanth ?
  
  A: Certainly. My joy knew no bounds then. It is great for any youngster to sing for Rehman and that too for Rajnikanth. I gave my best for the song, which became popular, thanks to Almighty.
  
  Q: On your role models?
  
  A: I have always admired S P Balasubramaniam and Hariharan. Their melancholy voice had always inspired me. They are the people who have impressed me with their songs. I love the voice of Shankar Mahadevan too.
  
  Q: Compare contemporary Tamil film music with that of the early 60s and 70s.
  
  B: The sound has certainly improved a lot today. We have advanced technical facilities and the entire scenario is different. We have to live with the age. However, with limited facilities the music composer of yesteryear were able to churn out scintillating tunes.
  
  Q: Relevance of classical music in present day film music?
  
  A: Classical music still has its hold on film music. The recent hit Kana Kanden Thozhi in Parthiban Kanavu is inspired by a pure classical raga. Though Western music too holds sway, classical and carnatic music still occupy a prominent place.
  
  Q: Is knowledge of classical music must for a playback singer?
  
  A: S P Balasubramaniam is an exception. However, if you know about the work you do, it would be of great help. I feel knowledge of classical music would be handy.
  
  Q: Your future goals?
  
  A: I have no big plans, but to concentrate on my work and give it my best. I believe I should be sincere and dedicated in what I do.
  
  Q: Favourites among your songs?
  
  A: I have sung about 100 songs. I like Maya Maya (Baba), Moondrezhuthu Ketta (Parthalae Paravasam), Oliyilae (Azhagi), Theradi Veedhiyil (Run), Aval Ulaga Azhagiyae (Lesa Lesa) and Aval Yar Aval (Anbu) . Lined up for me are for the movies Iyarkai, Boyz and Whistle.
