  In TFM, undoubtedly, Kavignar Vaali has a place next to Kaviyarasu Kannadaasan. Vaali is a kavignar for all seasons, all occasions..

  Some of my favorites from Vaali:
  
  1. Anbulla Maanvizhiyae and Naan nanri solvaen from Kuzhandhayum Dheivamum:

  A lot of old MGR songs penned by Vaali were fun to listen to. Most of the songs in Kalangarai ViLakkam like "Pallavan pallavi paadattumae", "Ponnezhil poothadhu pudhu vaanil", "Katru vaanga poanaen" have great lyrics. Other fun songs are from Parakkum Paavai (Muthamoa Moahamoa, Unnaithaanae), Rahasya Police 115 (Paal Thamizh Paal, Enna Porutham, Sandanam Kungumam konda thhaamarai poo), Kudiyirundha Koyil (Aadaludan, Un vizhiyum en vaaLum sndhithaal, Kunguma Pottin mangalam) etc. etc.....Hope these were written by Vaali. I'm not a great fan of the more recent songs by Vaali, and get a shock that the same Vaali who wrote songs with sol nayam & poruL nayam in those days writes today's techno-verses, but there's a separate thread to address that in this page.

  You are right that most of the MGR songs were by Vaali. A few exceptions do apply:
  ponnezhil pooththadhu.. (Panju Arunachalam's first song in TFM)
  kunguma pottin mangalam..(TFM's mudhal peN kavignar - Roshanaraa Begum; It was her only song in TFM..!)
  
  I wonder if "paal thamizh paal.." was by Kannadasan.
  
  Likewise, EnnavaLe in Kadhalan is by Vairamuthu. When I mentioned about Kadhalan, I meant the "muquabula" song; I heard that Vaali felt bad about writing such songs having written good ones in the past.

  "chinnavaLai mugam sivandhavaLai" is by K'dhasan.
  It is an excellent song; the tune is somewhat
  fast paced and the interlude fits-in very very
  beautifully with the tune. There is an excellent
  smooth flow throughout the song. This song is one of

  I forgot to add another excellent song by Vaali in "chandhrOdhayam". It is : "budhdhan yEsu gandhi piRandhadhu.. boomiyil edhaRkaaga..thOzha Ezhai namakkaaga?" This also has a great tune, thanks to mellisai mannar.

  I like the lines you've mentioned in the Chandrodhayam song. This song (and Mai yaendhum vizhiyaada song) is slightly different because TMS doesn't start by repeating PS's paragraph, but starts with "Aasai varum vayadhu" separate and then after finishing that para goes on to his version of Engirundhoa Aasaigal. The specific lines you have mentioned are my favorites, and I've always liked the way how they end the song there without going back to the pallavi---that way these sweet words linger on for longer.

I don't know whether Vaali came with these lines first and KB incorporated it into the picturization or the reverse (midhakkum pugai--parakkum manam, pongum paal--nenjilae aasai etc.)

  Watched the movie "Padagotti" today (for the first time ever). The credits said all the songs were penned by Vaali. All the songs in this movie had relatively good lyrics--though not like some of the classics discussed above. "Ennai eduthu thannai koduthu", "Naan oru kuzhandhai", "Paattukku paatteduthu", "Thottaal poo malarum" were all pleasant to listen to.

  In the recent times, amidst many mediocre songs, Vaali has penned some gems too. MogamuL & Avathaaram have good lyrics written by him.
  
  In mOgamuL, there is a description of the dawn (imagine a typical indian village or town in the morning). Vaali evvaLavu eLimaiyaay ezhudhi irukkiRaar parungaL:
  
  "aagaayam veLukkum adhikaalai azhagil
  kaagangaL vizhiththu karaiginDRa pozhudhil
  neLmoottai nirappi nedunchaalai kadakkum
  vilvaNdi izhukkum maattin maNiyOsai olikkum.."
  
  In another song "nenjE..gurunaadharin..", Vaali has rendered very apt lines for the situation. Situation idhuthaan : thanakku isai katRu koduththa gurunaadhar, maraNap padukkaiyil irukkiRaar. ivanO, avaraik kaappatRa yaar yaaridamO paNam kEtgiRaan. isai patRi ABCD theriyaadha oruvan (villain) paattu (aduvum karnaataka sangeetham) paadinaal paNam tharuvathaagak kooRugiRaan. appOdhu avan (manam nondhu) paaduvathaaga indha paadal:
