Is it possible that given the right opportunities (!?!) that anyone can become a Ilaiyaraja or a Ramanujam (never had any opportunities in life) or an Amitabh Bachchan or a Prem Nazir or a Sivaji Ganesan? It is not opportunities, my dear Anuradha Sriram, it is just chance, a one in a 2,000 year possibility! However, let me tell you, with the right technology and understanding of modern techno sounds and various pop/rock songs, anyone can become a music composer!

Folks
This is after reading an interview with Anuradha Sriram in the Arpil 17, 1998 edition of the Screen. Anuradha has done a Thesis on IR (I am interested in getting hold of that at the earliest) but also claims that anyone with opportunities can become like Ilaiyaraja. I don't understand how she could have made that claim. We are seeing so many musical artistes all over the world with so much facilities and brilliance and I am not able to find anyone who has produced impossible music like IR has done.
So, what is the basis of Anuradha's claim. I mean, I don't disagree with the final portion of that statement (sorry guys, I could not link that url here). I am sure all of you will also not disagree at all with our esteemed Anuradha Sriram on that last bit of that statement in her interview.
However, Anuradha cannot make a claim after coming to know that there are nealy 2.5 billion and only one and the only Ilaiyaraja. Yet, she has the phd to state that anyone can become a Ilaiyaraja. Can anyone please come to my emotional rescue. This statement is like someone said that earth is round, while people all thought she was a square, while everyone in the vedas in the land called Bharath knew that the earth was a real round. I mean, do you get my analogy, here?

Nithin :
I too do not share the view that given the opportunity, anyone could become an IR (or anyone else for that matter). First of all, what is meant by "opportunity" ? Opportunity is not presented to anyone on a platter, but is earned by merit. All that one needs to get going is a foothold, nothing more.
This topic reminds me of the comments made by S. A. Rajkumar in an interview with AV a long time ago. In the interview, he had said that IR became the sensation that he is because everything clicked at just the right time for him, and that others like him were not so lucky. That, I feel, is akin to denying credit where it is due.
One cannot expect to get an opportunity like composing a symphony for RPO just like that, and then claim that they did'nt get the chance to prove themselves.

Chuck her. She is probably trying to make herself
(un)popular! The best way is to not respond to it.

if anuradha really said that, she would next claim that spb made it big only because he sang in adimai penn, kjj became a star only because he sang "neeyum bommai" and so on and so forth.
as onlooker suggested, the best way to react to anuradha's statement (if it was true) would be to ignore it.

Get out of your depression pal. IR is not great
because he wanted to be another MSV or KVM. He has
his own identity - and what a terrific one! - and
that is what sets him apart.
I really wonder what all this talk about opportunity is. The adage that opportunity knocks on your door is nonsense. It just goes past and you have to open the door at the right time. Sorry if this sounds philosophical. But trying to pass the buck to "lack of opportunity" gets my goat.

Nithin, Ravi :
You're right, Ravi. I just read the article, and Anuradha's statement does sound innocent indeed.
So, Nithin, nothing to worry about pal. Things are all ok. :)

hi ravi,
thanks for the url. it only goes to prove how even innocous statements like "People with potential, if given opportunities, can become an Illayaraja or a Rahman" can be misconstrued.
btw, IR does not become big or small by what is said of him by others but by what he has produced.

When I was in Madras I heard the cacaphony

Srikanth and Bhava
Thanks a lot, guys. I feel like I am in good company. See, I don't think Anuradha should have made such a statement. Among all the music composers of India in the last 70 years, who could compose music the way IR has done. All those composers were/are immensely talented and look at AR Rahman, immensely talented. I mean, when she said that anyone can become a ARR, I do not dispute that. Look at IR's life story.
It is my firm belief that there can never be anybody like IR, it is simply difficult to explain, but that is the fact.
Anuradha has done her Ph.D. has even produced an album and I can see the reviews now.
To those who said, her statement is innocuous or innocent, it should be restated as 'IGNORANCE'. That is a very calluous statement from Anuradha, while I agree said in a harmless manner, perhaps.
I am not over reacting either, just took an opportunity to bring up a new thread, actually really independent of what any statements from anyone. The question again is, Can anyone be a Ilaiyaraja?

from whai i inferred fom the interview, i think anuradha sriram has not insulted IR or anyone in particular. because she has also included AR in her statement.so my conclusion is she did not apply her mind properly and made an rbit statement.perhaps she regretted making that statement later.sometimes u want to convey something, but by a wrong choice of words u can convey the wrong meaning. i think this is what happened in anuradha's case.anyway let's cool it.

Nithin: Why did you have to start a new thread to discuss whether anyone can become a Ilayaraja. You could have done it in the 'Claiming IR as all the time...' thread. :-).
