Hi,

All of you know that the combination of SPB and "Mike" Mohan as worked out well in the past. There was a myth that if Mohan acts as a singer and if SPB sings all the songs in that film, then the film will be a musical hit. Of course, the main reason was IR's music. Take the case of the following films :

1) Payanangal Mudivadhillai
2) Udhaya Geedham
3) Idhaya Kovil
4) Thendralae Ennai Thodu

What are your comments about this and are there any films that failed with the above combination?

There was a movie 'Thoongaatha Kannindru Ondru', that failed. I dont remember any song from this. The combo was there, and mohan was indeed a 'mike' holder!!

I think more than IR's music it was SP.B's voice that suited Mike Mohan so well all the songs became such a big hit.

Remember Paadu Nilave!
In that movie Mohan is a mike holder, and not all the songs sung by SPB! Was it big hit like others? I don't know exactly!

After the song "Paadu Nilaave" (Udhaya Geedham), SPB was referred to as "Paadum Nila Balu".

There is another song in Paadu Nilave which became a hit. its is

Yes, music for both films were scored by IR. But, in "Paadu Nilave", many of the songs were sung by Mano, which did'nt suit Mohan well.

The song that RS has pointed out may not be as well known as "Malaiyoram veesum" but was not all that obscure either !

Yov, Mouna Ragathai marandhu vitteergaLE, elorum !! Nilave vaa, Manram vandha thenralukku... paadalgalai eppadi marakka mudiyum, nanbargaLE !!

Some of the films may have failed, but the songs became hits invariably. It was also the time when IR was at his peak, and Mohan's films (with the "mike" role in most of them) provided ample scope for good songs, and was greatly enhanced by SPB's voice.

if iam correct mohan did not sing any song in "naan paadum paadal"... it was a very brief role for him....

there was one "devan koil deepam ondru" from the same movie... it was sung by "surendar" (the original mohan voice).... not sure if the song was in the movie... the other version of this song by janaki alone was there in the movie i think

Yes Sabesan! The song is in the movie! But the other two mentioned songs aren't for Mohan! Mohan did a small in the movie!

other non-mike-y film combos of Mohan and SPB which (really wonders me!) were not discussed yet.

1. Nilavae vaa selladhae vaa
2. Panivizhum iravu nanaindhadhu nilavu
3. Mandram vantha thendralukku manjam vara
4. Raja magal roja malar (is it pillai nila?).

If i remember correct all these songs are Asariri.
Infact 2. is sung with mohan and revathi in the background and sung by some group dancers.

what's this 'mike' - thing u people are referring to? do u mean that this actor mohan used to sing with a 'mike' on stage to the songs in the film?

don't u know 'mike' mohan? it is like 'douser' raamaraajan. Mike and douser are nick names. infact these actors became popular amongst thamizh film audience because of these nicknames. its because in almost all his films mohan will catch hold of a mike ie. microphone on a dias and mime for a song which will be soooper doooper hit!! remember in the other thread eden or somebody suggested you the list of all mohan film songs sung almost by SPB by IR? almost all those movies of mike mohan were silver jubliee hits. such was the fame of mike during those times.

similar is the situation for 'douser' raamaraajan a.k.a 'pasunaesan' raamaraajan. coz almost all his films were village subjects in which he is identified with wearing douser a.k.a trouser(half pant) hence he became so famous. though douser did not wear douser in all his films but still he is identified so. same is the case for other nickname 'pasunaesan' meaning 'lover of cow', for him. because a couple of movies were soooper doooper hit in which he acted as a milkman....again IR music.

Most of the mohan songs had the ultimate SPB, hence Mohan was nicked named as "mike -Mohan", SPB + IR are the reasons for Mohan's films success!

NO way, it had super dooper hits songs, "vaa vennila unnai thane", is one of the best melody by the ultimate SPB.

Honestly Vinayak;

If I want to listen to hardcore Carnatic, I will also listen to Dr.BalamuraliKrishna, Dr. KJY, DR. Seerkazhi Govinderajan, Pithu kodi Murugadas, Nithya Shree, ...etc.

but we are talking here about playback singing for the film industry, not kacheris. SPB is the don amongst Playback singers in India, that's all. learning a skill & using that skill is NOT A BIG DEAL, like learning carnatic & doind kacheris is NOT a BIG DEAL,eg (DR.BMK,DR.KJY,DR.Seerkazhi, ...etc), but without learning a skill (carnatic music) and singing carntic songs (Shankerbaranam, sagara sangamam,engiruntho vanthaan, kadhal oviyam, ghazzal,..) is A BID DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!, that's where SPB stands taller & fatter than the rest of the artists!

I just cant help laughing at this!!
