Gavin Greenaway is someone to watch out for. He has a thrilling score for The Time Machine 2002. I feel the finale is very Ilayaraaja. (In fact, could have been an IR tune itself, I am trying to scan my database!) Just like how i think Danny Elfman's Men In Black theme draws a lot from IR tunes and style. Another comparison is the Star Wars Phantom Menace finale by John Williams. Actually the only two composers who really could be secretly admiring IR. For more of Gavin Greenaway, try to get hold of his composition for the Millenium Parade at Walt Disney Studios. It is a beautiful beautiful tune, chorus and great percussion sounds! It is called Tapestry of Nations and Tapestry of Dreams! Actually some of it is in the Time Machine.

Halo 'Ilayaraaja inspired Hollywood composers',
Hmmm, forgive me if i'm referring to the wrong movie but the THE TIME MACHINE(2000) is scored by Klaus Bandelt. In fact his title theme is a dead ringer to Goldmith's THE EDGE. Totally! :)
As for SW:TPM, when it was released, there were many in TFM circles saying how much the music in the ending ceremony ('la-la' music) resembles that of dearest maestro's trademark established like 20yrs ago! Another dead ringer!! Well who knows what other surprises we'll have in SW:AOTC :)
IR-Fan,
The music you are refering to, is it from Good Will Hunting? I have already realized long ago that many of Elfman's chorus and certain pieces have IR's trademarks.
For those who are quick to dismiss it(as usual) here is the substantiating link. Listen to the guitar piece and the humming chorus. When listening, have IR in mind. Just don't get blown away.

This might not be exactly relevant, but here goes...

It also quotes Danny Elfman's music for Goodwill Hunting at one point! And makes for interesting reading!

Oh sorry. It was Danny Elfman's score for 'A simple plan' that this article talks about, not Goodwill Hunting.

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! Gavin Greenaway apparently is paying some form of tribute to Ilayaraaja. Look at this one: Walt Disney Records Presents Walt Disney World "Millenium Celebration" album composed for the Millennium Parade at WD theme parks was composed by Gavin Greenaway. I saw the "Tapestry Of Nations" parade (45 mins) and I was totally bewildered by it (since 2001, it is shorter and called Tapestry of Dreams), the most beautiful ever - what enchanted me was costumes, the stilted butterflies, the sage of time, the several carriage of drums and the amazing amazing rhythmic percussion for that score. Since I saw this, I wanted to own the album, finally got it today. Okay, here is the surprise.
The album starts off with a very apt piece and from where? It is the prelude percussion phrase for Happy New Year Illamai Idho Idho song from Sakala Kala Vallaban . A non-IR fan couldn't have seen the relevance of the piece for the Millenium Celebration theme! But, an IR Fan or more precisely a Tamilian will see a little more in the album. The main theme (track 3) starts off with a few Tamil words in the background - I recognized "Yenna Pannuradhu!!!" there was something like Ila... Pola or something, there is a little more but soft and not that audible (it is like the words by AR Rahman for a second interlude for Taramapam song.) But, the great thing is track 3 starts off with Tamil words and only Tamil words! Ends with some Sitar sounds!
Third fact is the chord arrangements are so IRish. Amazing! you can immediately recognize this influence as well. The tune for part 3 is very charming, a pallavi type slowed down theme and recurring. But, sounds African.
(By the way, Greenaway and Elfman have worked together on Elfman's albums. Greemaway is only around 35 years.)
Another coincidence, this album was recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Strange isn't it? IR did his symphony there and now a possible fan who is a composer for Hollywood wants to record this with the RPO?!
Get hold of the album (on sale in Amazon.com, but new one is $30 and not easily found) only if you have been to the parade, because there is only very little music to enjoy - but if associate it with the parade it remains in your mind.
We must all thank God for we get so much music in a 5 minute song of IR, but others' even if they take 45 minutes they can only do so much to fill 44 minutes!!! Good attempt by Greenaway, however, it is only the percussion that will blow you away.
But, the great thing is 'Millenium Celebration' music by THE Walt Disney studios starts off with the a touch of Ilayaraaja! What more to say! The Millenium kicks off with the sound of the Maestro and his language!!!!!
