Such (genuine !) modesty is so rare these days..
Contrast Chitra's interview with other music
related interviews on rediff ( Anu Malik most
recently, Hema Sardesai and others... )
Refreshing !

Did you ever expect to be so famous?
God, I never expected to be in films!
I mean, once you started singing in films. See, some papers even compare you with Lata Mangeshkar...
Please, please..Guruvayoorappa, please don't say such things. I know where I stand. Anybody can write anything, but one should know one's abilities.
this sums up her personality!

A great admirer of Lata and Asha, Chithra has not allowed her admiration to choke her style, which she has cultivated over the years. As she once said “The success of any song depends on so many factors like how the singer comprehends the lyrics, emotes while singing. The emotion must be conveyed subtly. A total involvement of the singer can at times make a song sound beautiful.” Adding: “It is not the voice of the singer alone that makes a song a hit. The lyrics, the tune, the artists who enact the song. In short how a song is conceptualised may decide the fate of the song.”

* Karthi, somehow, I don't think that it is in her character to say such thinks. Like in the interview, she does not credit herself for her success at any point. But she points out everyone else.
And I know you are joking around with BB. BTW, BB anna, what does the initials stand for, if you don't mind me asking.

I found this very surprising and enduring...
I had only small dreams and ambitions. I thought if I learnt Carnatic music at the college level, I would get a job as a music teacher in some college or school. I would have been happier if I got a job in a college, but even a school job would have been fine. You know, both my parents were teachers and my ambitions never went beyond that

The interview was good. Chitra was very frank when she spoke about her interactions with Janaki, the first time she interacted with IR and her admiration for Yesudoss and Lata.As Dev pointed out, such modesty is reallly rare these days. Read the junkie Anu-malik's interview just a few days before Chitra, and u'll know what I'm talking about!

I recently heard an album with assorted carnatic numbers by various singers - chitra being one among them. she was excellent in her rendering of "Smaravaaram vaaram". Hope to see her give a full length carnatic concert some day!

Chandy, hi
Can you give the title of the album please?
- From: Neels (@ 202.54.125.189)
on: Tue Jul 20 09:25:41 EDT 1999
I think it is Krishnaarpanam. Was released a few years ago.
It has songs in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and Sanskrit. Krishnaa Nee Begane, JagatoDhaarana are some prominent numbers.
Chandy, is my info. correct? Or are you talking about some other album?
There was one released in 1990 called 'AARATI' which had excellent devotional numbers in Malayalam, sung by Yesudas and Chitra. I believe it was also released in Tamil later.
'Ashtami Rohini' a song in Shivaranjani Ragam was very well rendered by her in Malayalam. I forgot the opening lines of its Tamil equivalent.
Both the albums are a must buy for all Chitra fans.

Neels, no. this isnt krishnaarpanam or aarthi. This is a classical album that has 1-2 songs by various singers including chitra, unnik etc - assorted collection of classical numbers from diff albums by diff singers.
Aruvi, The name of the album is classical encounters (i'll confirm this after i go back home). This isnt very old - its new.
** digression **
Neels, send me an email with ur contact numbers. I'm in India next week.

aruvi, Neels
Here are the *correct* details.
Tha album is Classical Collection - Popular Traditional Kritis by Magnasound. It has songs sung by UnniK, Chitra, Sangeetha sivakumar and Sowmya.
Sorry for the name-mess up earlier. The titles of the albums these days are too similar, and memory cells got confused a bit :)

chithra is probably one of the few TFM playback singers endowed with a really melodious voice and can sing any kind of song with utmost ease unlike a few others like Swarnalatha (one could see the strain on her face if you watch her live - BTW I dont in any way mean to say that Swarnalatha is bad!!) All the more surprising is the heights she has reached and the modesty that has accompanied her all the way... long live the melody queen...
I have listened to some of Chithra's rendition of classical songs and I felt that her voice is more suited to film and light classical songs than the heavier carnatic songs... I felt that her voice and style did not do full justice to the classical numbers (I am talking about pure carnatic songs - not carnatic based film songs) - I recently bought a carnatic music CD by Chithra - I found that her voice modulation did not suit carnatic music... somehow it felt a little incomplete - ennavo was lacking - felt like I heard a filmy version of the carnatic song.... is it just me that feels this way?

on: Wed Jul 21 13:34:56 EDT 1999
I have heard her classical rendition of a song on the radio. I found that she was good. Maybe because we are all so used to hearing her singing in film songs that some might find something missing? But, I would like to ask anyone with good carnatic knowledge, how come they sing the songs in such low pitch. Like when I listen to NithyaShree's carnatic singing, I find that her voice sounds deep.
- From: Isai Rasigai (@ columbo.wfd.com)
on: Wed Jul 21 14:21:20 EDT 1999
Nithyashree is very knowledgeable (gnanam jaasthi) - I would rather prefer her singing good solid carnatic concerts than keech keech kaththal (some of them) film songs....
if you are looking for real depth in voice among women, I think Sudha ragunathan is the one... there are other hard core carnatic musicians but sudha is more popular... Nithyashree, sings at 6 kattai (A)...
I once heard Chithra singing in Puttaparthi - man that was a soul-stirring rendering of bhajans... absolute dedication and devotion ... but again when she tried a heavier classical song, I could really notice the difference between her singing that song and say a seasoned carnatic musician singing it...
