All strictly IMO:
PS,SJ Chitra, Sujatha and Swarnalatha are all fantastic singers. While Sujatha is singing alot more in the recent past, and Swarnalatha has shown immense variety and expression in her singing, both have not achieved the volume (number of songs) to be termed number 1 during their prime. So I am not including them for further discussion.
PS - Sila samayam mookkaala paaduvaar.
SJ - Sila paattukkellam pronunciation clear aa irukkaddhu. might be nasal deficiency.
Chitra - Crystal Clear 100% fiber optic digital voice. 0% pisuru.
All three have demonstrated veriety, though I would say that SJ takes the cake in terms of wide range of expression.
All things considered my vote goes to Chitra for the best female playback singer.

Chitra crystal clear 100% fiber optic digital voicea? Can I say this is because of your underlying love for Chitra? How about the song "poojaikkaetha poovidhu"? Chitra sang it in such a way that she seems to have difficulty in singing that song. Lot of time, there were false voices. niraya dhadava mookkaala paadinaar. yekkachakkamaa pisuru. PS mookkaala paadinadhukku yedhaavadhu eg. songs kodungaLaen? And please give such examples from songs before 1980. As far as clarity in singing is concerned, I would give 100% to PS. SJ wins the race in terms of expression and Chitra? She has not reached the legendary state of PS and SJ yet and so I feel it is too early to include Chitra in this comparison.

Chandy & Aruvi,
I would like you to listen to the following songs on screen and then get back to me (if you wish to that is). I am picking up just one song for each heroine across many years where PS's modulation is flawless.

I can always come up with another set and yet another set whenever you want to! (ofcourse, you have to count ManOrama and Sukanya out!). I did not include 'Poo Pookum Maasam' inspite of its matching Kushboo because it's already been dealt with as to why I cited that song - not because PS introduced some kind of modulation but just because her voice suits anyone.
You could try this song if anyone's interested:
'Oruthi Oruvanai Ninaithu Vittaal' has been sung by PS for Vijaya Kumari in Tamil and Saavithri in Telugu.
That's it for now!

Karthi,
Impressive list! Still does'nt mean a thing in terms of singing with unique expression for each of those actresses. Only means she sang for a lot of actresses. Every artist would love to have fans like you:-)
SM,
Just for example listen to Iyarkkaiyennum Ilayakkanni and Aayiram NilavE vaa.

What do you mean legendary? Do you have to be in the field for 50 years before you become legendary or do you have to be over 50. In any case, I have never heard PS or SJ being referred to as LEGENDARY outside of this forum. And as far as the song 'poojai ketha poo ithu' is concerned, there is no suprise that it might sound to YOU as though she had difficulty singing. I would say that even PS or SJ would have had trouble singing a song for the first time in a foriegn language. As far as clearity is concerned, Chitra is very clear and the lyrics stand out while when some sing, it is hard to figure out what they are singing. And as far as being in the comparision, she has got as much right as the other two. She may not have been around for the last 40 years or so but she is just as popular as the other two. Heck, in this day and age, she is the most popular as were SJ and PS in their time. In her early days, Chitra did have trouble with her pronounciation, but then she didn't have the advantage of knowing the language before she started singing in it, as did SJ and PS. But nowadays, she is the best out there. I mean, check out the songs of ESK and such if you want proof to her being able to sing without DIFFICULTY.

rajaG, that was not a list made to say they are good songs - please! you are only disappointing me! Undoubtedly they are good songs - the very reason they are here is a different reason than that and you know what it is. If you want to appreciate them better try to see some of them on screen again and then let me know. As for your categorizing me I took it as a pay-back to what I done earlier.
bb, that was in response to your posting where you had quoted some five points (numbered accordingly), but the touch of impolitness was because of your subsequent posting which actually triggered me. (If you had meant humour in saying "idhukku pErdhaan nethiyadiyaa" then I'm sorry I didn't get it). If I said something and am refuted back by someone with a different perspective I would certainly give it a thought to reconsider. But your (not just you) immediate responses did not seem so. Inspite of IR not being my favourite (this was in another thread), after reading postings by Srinath, Raj and certain others I have determined to listen to him again when I get an opportunity - but now with a different perspective and ears. In the same way (I agree that you have listened to lots of PS singing) I expected many of you to listen to the same songs on screen again and then get back which cannot happen over the night. When it comes to subtlities of singing one can't describe them (You had asked how PS modulated her voice for Kushboo - how do you think I will be able to say that even if she had?) - the ones I came up with were just nothing compared to what I feel. So it's more a matter of feeling them than merely being able to describe them. Again, it's something to do with your likes and dislikes and I can't force you guys to listen to PS if you don't have an inclination to it. But I think this thread is only for those who have. How can I ever have a say on your musical faculties or abilities? Some of your questions actually made me think in those lines! My intention was not to throw vitriol at you but to try to make something clear. (In your earlier postings I really thought you were pulling at my leg - I mean it I didn't take it serious - and that was why I reacted saying 'you know my weakness' - but not until you came up with something like I was trying unfortunately to boost PS image (which actually provoked me), that I knew you were really serious in what you were saying and not just pulling my leg!).

SM,
Difficulty singing?
Aren't the singers human like the rest of us? Don't moods, biorhythms, states of health affect them?
Unlike those days when an MD will wait for the singer (in case the singer feels under the weather), present day singers has no choice but to perform within timeslots given by MD's.
An MD may also want part of a song to sung in 'abaswaram' for situation reasons. E.g: 'music lesson'song in 'alaigal Oyvathillai'.
Ever seen Chitra sing live? She sings effortlessly.
Chitra is just 'GREAT'.

Aruvi,
By saying 'legendary', I just meant to say that PS and SJ have proved that they were the best in their times and they remained in the top for a long time. Chitra, IMO, is not the best now as you claim. I would say Sujatha is as good, or better, than Chithra. Chithra is a very good singer and also my favourite. But, she is definitely not the best now. I would like to mention another song in which I feel that Chithra seem to have some DIFFICULTY. Have you heard 'pogum vazhi ellam kaatrae' ("Ratchagan")? Have you heard 'Anjali... Anjali...' ("Duet"). She seems to struggle at high pitches. Chitra is yet to prove her superiority (or shall I call it uniqueness?) over the contemporary singers which PS and SJ have proved in their times. They stood out to be the best in their times and that is why I called them as legends (and to call a person as a legend, the person needs to be in the field for quite a long period of time. I don't know if YOU would call a person a legend if he renders a dozen great songs in a period of year and then vanish in thin air:-). I feel no great difference between Sujatha and Chitra. It is difficult to claim who is the best among these two. And, that is why I didn't want to include Chitra in the comparison. And, regarding "poojaikketha poovidhu" and the trouble to sing for the first time in a foreign language stuff, I don't think that is a valid reason. Also, I didn't find any great flaws in her pronounciation. It was only the way she sang it that I thought she seem to have some difficulty (Also, I have clearly mentioned that I thought so, and so I can't understand the significance of caps in YOU in your posting). I don't find any such thing in PS' and SJ's songs. I just said it is too early to compare Chitra with PS and SJ and I maintain it. Chitra is my favourite singer but she is yet to reach the stage where she can be compared with PS and SJ. (well, as far as TFM is concerned, for me they are legends only, even if someone accepts it or not, outside this forum).

RajaG,
Thanks for the examples. I will certainly listen to these songs and post my opinion.
