Shankar-Ehsan-Loy...maybe the only other MD with Bollywood roots also composing for TF....I was listening to their "Dil Chahta Hai"..except for the title track, all the other songs seem to meander around...but they are the only ones around in Bollywood who give a original techno touch to their music apart from ARR.
"Aalavandhaan" is their next big TF release...would like to hear your opinions on this trio.

Hi Jay
Most of the synth programming is done by Loy and me I am the one who is passionately into synths. We use the Z1 , Nord Lead 3 , Novation supernova alanlog modelling synths.

Apart from your participation in this thread, I suggest u peek into :

where some unknown talents are displaying their proficiency. Though they call themselves amateurs, their work is pretty professional. Since u had been through this phase, your comments on their compositions may be a pat on their back and help them improve.

hi everybody,
Dear Mr. Y..
a few corrections first..Mr.Y.., when i typed @#$!!!!$% instead of MR. Feynman, i did it cos i didn't know ur name or what i was to refer to u as..it was in no way(may be i should put it in caps NO WAY)meant to be a replacement for any filthy language or words from my side..i'm indeed very sorry u actually misinterpreted it and sure enough it must have driven u mad..but that's not what i meant and i'm saying it with all sincerity..kindly accept this explanation

hi nandhi
It was very nice of you to clarify things right away. I am sure Mr.Y? will accept the explanation.
please tell us about your experience in working with SEL - how did kamal involve himself, like i have heard shanker and kamal are very "active" and "enthued" guys during work...how was your experience.?

to sridhar seetharaman,
hey u sure did dig up info on me..where did u find it?
dear kiru,
looks like we all are the same kind..music and maths..i actually don't find it surprising cos it's a pretty common thing in the south where the way our parents bring us up , there's equal importance given to fine arts and academics..i personally never intended to take up music as a profession..i was working in a software company managing human resources and admin..
as for writing lyrics i have written my songs in english and in hindi..i honestly don't know tamil well enough to be able to read or write..i was brought up in hyderabad though i was born in madras, iyengar family and all..i am more of a music person than a lyric writer.. now i'm composing songs for a tamil film with ranjit barot..and for me song writing is more to do with emotion and feelings and its a very intuitive process
somebody asked about how much i rehearsed for the song (africa kaatupuli)..actually we recorded the hindi version first..shanker walked into the studio and sang the entire song to me once and after that i went straight behind the mic..these days we don't record the entire song in one take or stretch ..so we learn the song as and when we are recording..what also happens is while the song is taking shape with the vocal parts, the md might decide to change some part of the original plan depending on what he thinks and feels at that point of time..and ofcourse people do welcome inputs from the singers and incorporate it if they think it fits the theme of the song or the scene it is meant to portray.. we recorded the tamil version a month later..since i already knew the tune iwent straight behind the mic with the lyrics.
it's so amazing to see different people having different views..talk of maths , talk of defining the word 'genius'..hey this can go on endlessly..this reminds me of an old sanskrit shloka i read in school
makshikaha vranam icchanthi
dhanam icchanthi parthivaha
neechaha kalaham icchanthi
vaadam icchanthi garvithaha
(just as bees love honey
misers love money
mean minded people love to cause trouble
and egoistic people love to argue)
dear mr.asdfasdasd,
why do i get the feeling i know u very well?
in this entertainment business, artists don't necessarily get to do what they want to..and it is also not possible to satisfy every person..when music is done for a film it is done as per the director/producer's wishes and to suit what he has in mind..obviously there will be people out there who will not like it just as there might be people who'd love it..it's easy for u guys to sit there with ur cosy jobs and comment on our work, for us it's our bread and butter and this is what pays our bills.
i love this forum and looks like i'm going to get addicted to it..take care everybody..
love

dear srikanth,
that was pretty quick i thought..working with SEL was really great..i'm not saying this cos i should say something nice..i've known these guys for the last 4 years and i have done quite a few jingles with them..and i waited 4 yrs for these guys to give me a break..they are fun and shanker is quite a hyperactive person and his enthusiasm is very infectious..we are always having a ball of a time while working in the studio..when we take a break or finish our work we'd be jamming up with our guitars and stuff like that..i met mr.kamalhasan first when i went to madras to record africa kaatupuli but my interaction was pretty limited at that time..but when he asked me to dub dialogues in tamil for manisha koirala, that was when i interacted with him a lot..u see , i'm not a dubbing artist ,i'm a singer..dubbing dialogues is a different ballgame altogether..i was quite nervous and was not too sure of pulling it off..but surprisingly he seemed more confident and told me and enacted each and every line, explained the feel and supervised my dubbing..i honestly don't think i could have done all that if it was not for him..he is extremely clear and articulate and his sincerity and spirit is pretty infectious..i guess that is why he is what he is today

Nandini,
I always wondered why there are not too many female composers around. It is impossible to believe that women lack creativity. I am happy to see someone like you taking up, composing.
I look forward to your work with Ranjith.

hi nandhi,
Thanks for the quick reply, very interesting to note that you have dubbed for monisha.
also the reason for me being quick is, it was about 9:00am when you posted, i just came to my office!...newtfmpage.com is among first few things i do when I open the box.:):)

sridhar,
even i find it very surprising that there aren't many female composers in the industry..it's not that women lack creativity..it's just that a career that takes up all their time and especially the entertainment business was not something women opted for till a few years back..u won't believe this but people never used to believe i could play the guitar until i actually played it to them..they actually have asked me q's like "do u carry the guitar for show off or something or do u really play it?"..but i'm sure it won't be very long before more women start composing music..i myself would never have seen the face of this industry had it not been for hariharan who discovered me

Nandhini
Do you look forward to be a full time composer or
a full time singer?
As a composer how do you approach towards song composing like you come up with the chords progression or first the basic melody and then chords and rthym.
I also request you guys to visit our amateur composers page.

Nandhini,
Thanks for the reply..Please do post some of your lyrics..especially the ones in English :) I will try to understand them :)
What is sad though is you say, "in this entertainment business, artists don't necessarily get to do what they want to"..I sure wish you guys find some avenues to propagate the kind of music you love to do through other non-commercial media while simultaneouly following your commercial engagements if at all that is possible. (Can I suggest mp3.com ?)
Please do not consider that anybody is passing judgements. This is music so naturally people will have their own opinions. Looking forward to your compositions as well. Good luck with that.
(HR in a software company ?? I guess you are better off with music :) )

Nandini,
Good to see such spirited postings in this forum by the people who make music.
I heard you a couple of years ago in Rang Bhavan, Bombay when Shankar introduced you as a talented newcomer in a concert by SILK (Louis Bank, Sivamani, Taufiq Qureshi et al). I think you sang an English number, which was your own composition. Your voice was quite unique and you sang well. I never heard of you after that and was pleasantly surprised to see you as the lead female singer in Abhay/ALavandaan.
Congrats, you have arrived as a playback singer now and have started singing in Tamil, your mother tongue.
I would like to take this opportunity to bring up the issue of 'diction', something that the present crop of singers seem to care the least about...
I agree you have no read-write skills in Tamil. I don't know if it's the same case with Shankar and Hariharan as well. All of you are Tamilians and have a fairly decent Tamil diction (except Hariharan, in my opinion). But surely there's room for improvement. Getting the na and Na right, getting the la and La right... these are non-trivial. You are not conversing in the language... you are trying to sing, and reach out to a large section of people. As you know, most play back singers in Tamil have not been Tamilians, they may be writing the lyrics in Telugu or Malayalam... yet they tried getting the pronunciation right... agree there may be minor hitches in their 'accent' which is acceptable, but getting the words wrong, using the wrong letters is NOT.
Don't you think it is the singer's responsibility to ensure that the diction comes out right? Do you guys consult with the lyricist at all?
Do you think with a flawed diction and incomprehendable words a singer will be accepted in Hindi cinema? Didn't Hariharan have to go through a rigorous study of the Urdu language before he got accepted there? (this, in spite of being brought up in Bombay).
Enough said I think.
Soon, this movie will be dubbed in Telugu and you will have to sing in that language as well. But do make the effort to get the diction right. I am sure your effort will pay off.
Once again, Welcome to TFM!
