I am not sure about that. I guess there are lots of rare movies like Ethanai Konam Ethanai Parvai have pretty good songs. But Iravizhi Kaviyangal has couple of classic songs.

who sang the song other than SJ Kaise kahon from Nandu? anyone? Nandu has couple of hindi songs and two other good songs. It is also one of his best.

EVK is just another exemplary album of IR, it is not experimental but completely very contemplative/romantic songs that is how different this one was from the rest. It may rank somewhere in the top 20 of IR' best albums

EVK is indeed experimental. IR plays atmospheric piano pieces that are actually vocal poems: "Thendralilae" and "En Gaanam" defy the standard expectations of song length, pallavi and charanam in TFM. "Kaadhal Panbaadu" by KJY is a faster number with atypical orchestration for its time.

guys, in april 98, in this thread, a guy called ram posted this:
"Before I proceed to do so, let me name THE ONE MOVIE which I personally rate as Raja's ALL TIME BEST. Now, I
am sure that most of you would not have heard about this movie, since it got released only for the afternoon show in one
of the theatres in Devi Complex, Madras, where it ran only for a couple of weeks (in the late 1970s). Nevertheless, I and
a small coterie of my friends (hardcore Raja fans) believe that this specific movie is indeed Raja's best. The name of the
movie is:
Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal
Literally translated, so that you all get the name right, the name is:
Eera (Wet) Vizhi (Eyes) Kaaviyangal (epic tale)
From what I understand from my brother, who is the only person I know who has seen this movie, Raja scored music free
for this movie (director was the late Bhim Singh's son). Raja has experiemented a lot in this movie, and the songs in this
movie can be rated along with the world's best recorded music such as Miles Davis' "Kind of Blues" album,
Tchaikovsky's "Swan Song", etc. "
it led to a massive expectation among all IR fans to listen to this elusive EVK. thanks to rex, one song is up now, and i guess, others are on the way to being uploaded. we should get back to discussion on EVK now. the kaadhal paNpaadu song by KJY is mind-blowing. i could see elements of jazz in it(with the so little knowledge of jazz that i have) and the usage of guitar is also too good. a great song, indeed!!!

Ofcourse I listened to EVK only after it was out up on Rex's site and being discussed here.
But however I have heard about EVK before. It was like a 'unpopular favourite' to many ardent music fans those days - something like 'jhonny' to many film goers.(I know of people who worship sridevi's character in the movie - I am not talking about sreedevi, I know there are many - but the character).
My brother (cousin) being one of ardent film music fans, has talked to me about EVK. He is the one who introduced me to film music in general. But however I had not listened to it before (unitl it was discussed here), I do not know why. I am sure he would have had a cassette but it never occured to me to borrow it and listen to it. When it was being talked about here, I realised then that this was the same film that my brother had talked to me about.
I listened to it later and go wow! - how did I miss this one.

bb: actually thanks to sridhar seetharaman and harigovindan (remember him?? :-) ), this album became popular among TFM fans in the US. songs are actually heavy for me. one of the songs (kAdhal paNpAdu?) has a tricky eduppu after the charaNam.

bb,
How about putting one/two songs from this movie as SOTD?

ms (can you post with another handle, there is already a MS here), the second song in SOTD was from EVK. Check the bottom of this page:

Can you believe Kadhal paNpadu is the climax song of the movie :-)
All the songs have poignant feel including the best piece of the movie, "kanavil midhakkum"...
The cassette cover looks vague with pratap pothen holding a baton wearing a leather jacket :-)...
The movie was released along with nizhalgaL, and coupla other Raja greats, and got lost in the crowd....I hunted for the songs and got them recorded after I saw the post added here by bb.

"kanavil midhakkum" is the most immaculately/beautifully composed 'fantasy' feel song ever composed!

saying EVK is thebest conveys that IR's repertoire was limited and the maximum we say was EVK. EVK is another album but very relaxed type stuff. that is it.
this ILLAS business please that is a bit trying. appreciate IR or Maestro etc....

my opinion best of IR are many, but some very EXTRAORDINARY AND REALLY interesting albums are:
VEERA (RAJANIKANTH IS THE LUCKIEST PERSON AFTER SJANAKI IN MY OPINION ON THIS EARTH! ALMOST ALL IR-rAJNI COMBO IS WAY BEYOND BELIEF!)
ANNAI ORU AALAYAMA
SINGARAVELAN
SOLLA THUDIKUTHU MANASU
PAAYUM PULI
GURU (T)
GURU (M)
PUMUGA PADIYIL NINNEYUM KAATHU (M)
GEETA (KAN)
ANVESHNA (TEL)

I too agree that EVK-1982 had an amazing musical score. Directed by B Lenin. I remember watching it long back - a very boring story stg. Prathap and Radhika.
While KJY's Kaadhal Pannpaadu and Kanavil Midhakkum are wonderful songs, my favourite is 'En gaanam'. You almost decide that it is a solo by IR when Jency makes a surprise entry towards the end. A very different song.

As a matter of fact, whatever work was Raja's best, or any composer's, for that matter, it's all subjective. The answer will vary from person to person. I've heard some say IR's best album was Nizhalgal. Others say it's Annakili. Others say it's Alaigal Oyvathillai. You guys get what I'm saying?
Anyhow, Sridhar, in response to your initial question, to my knowledge, Eeravizhi Kaaviyangal was released 1982. Any database with info on Raja's films will say that.

I would vote for Guru (malayalam) and Jhonny for IR's best works till date.
Both are unique and unmatched (unconquered ??!!) in their own ways.

there's a tinge of melancholy in these masterpieces (heavy?), even in the relatively fast `kAdhal paN pAdu'...I remember seeing this movie that ran for may be only one day..(Jeans pOttu kudisai veetil vAzhum Ezhai Pratap...way too async in the 80's with reality)...
Instrumental Genius of IR exemplified by EVK...
