Jeera
Producing good compositions for a movie depends so much on the musical inclinations/interest/knowledge of the film director and producer, of course, aside from that of the music director himself. A good song in a movie is a good way to measure the director's taste in music (IMHO). As a corollary, a not-so-good song doesn't mean the music directors are not making good music. So perhaps, the non-Tamil folks (directors/producers) are being more careful in choosing/extracting fairly decent songs from IR/ARR - I don't know, I am just contemplating.
"IRum Kai vitachhu, ARRu, Kai Vittachhu - PAvam TFM" - indha statement mattum naan otthukkamaattaen. There is still very good/pleasant TFM if one really wishes to listen to.

Guys..kOmallo koyila sounds like Dilwale from mahAdev (see Guitar Prasanna's fav from raajangahm.com). Who is this Shreya ? Very nice voice..good pronounciation..If IR takes her under her wings she can become a successor to Chitra..The sound engineering is bad in the synth drum kit driven songs. Shreya's voice has been marred IMHO by the echo/reverb.
Looks like IR is in a good mood..which is good for us :)

IRs last few albums have been mediocre and indicates a clear lack of interest in composing good tunes. Almost every song, including songs from Azhagi, Kaasi etc. seem to have been recycled. Nothing fresh. Ivan was different and good(3 songs) but the rest have been pesdestrian.
He seems to be just a BGM guy these days when it comes to tamil films. I am not sure how Pithamagan is going to be. Songs in Sethu were good but nothing great.

kiru,
If you have listened it from Idlebrain.com or musicindiaonline, the recording on the site itself is bad. I think the reverb will not be there in original cassette. From my knowledge of IR's songs, except for jaji malli,
all the songs are totally original including the instrumentization. IR has always been very partial to Telugu songs. Though there have been some comments in the forum about similarities, the resemblances are few and apart.
Kommallo.. song is probably THE best song that has come out in a long time. One of those evergreen classics.
Shreya and others singers are from a long list of talented and brilliant singers that Telugu FM is lucky to have currently.

Kiru, You are right. There seems to be something wrong with the songs conversion at these sites. In fact, Idlebrain.com is distinctly better than the musicindia site. We have to hear the cd.

kiru,
Shreya Ghoshal is a teenager with great talent. Karthik Raaja offered her a chance to sing in Tamil films during the Saregama TV program on Zee TV, in which he was a judge. Apparently Sanjay Bhansali offered her to sing for his 'Devdas' after this program and it turned out to be her debut film.
She has sung well in KR's 'Album' and IR's 'Solla maRantha Kathai' and people have been almost unanimous in their approval of her diction (Sadhana has a lot to learn from this youngster in that department). Going by her popularity in Hindi films, looks like she may concentrate more over there and sing occasionally in Tamil & Telugu a la Kavita Krishnamurthy

Also, in my opinion, Shreya has better pronunciation skills in telugu (and also tamil) compared to Sadhna sargam. She has a sweet voice too. I wish Shreya was used for Jaji malli instead of SS.
BTW, kiru are you from Andhra? Just curious.

Kommallo is a beautiful song. IR singing suits this song so well. While IR has sung really great songs (eg. janani), there are some which one feels he could have handed over to others. But not this one.

More news on Adoor's latest film 'Nizhal kkuthu' that has IR scoring music. It's a Tamil/Malayalam film, based in the Travancore province (today's Kanyakumari Distt) in the early parts of 20th century.

Has anyone seen this film at film festivals?
"The film, with a budget of about Rs 1 crore, has been co-produced by the Fonds Sud (South Fund) of France, as well as the Hubert Bals Fund of the Rotterdam film festival and the Monte Cinema Verita of Switzerland."

isaiosai,
Thanks for the info. Is that a big-banner movie? How is the music being marketed out there?
BTW, I think it's high time these guys started using the word Background Score instead of re-recording, as the latter may give a different meaning. What say?

Peter Pan,
No, it is not a big-banner movie. This is hero Sachin's 2nd movie. His 1st movie was a flop:) Heroine is relatively new too (probably her 1st movie, not sure). Producer JM Joshi is also not a big name there. Music is being marketed quite ok...but nowhere comparable to new movies like Manmadhudu and others with bigger stars. Anyway, rather than marketing I would love IR's music to reach people on it's own merit. Atleast, that is how it has been with his music in Telugu. After listening to the songs and seeing some stills, I personally am not hoping for much from this movie. Would love to have some pleasant surprise thou!
And yes, I too feel background score would be/sound more appropriate.
A trivia: Chamaku cham is picturised on Sachin and Nagma (only for this song) as part of college celebrations involving current and ex-students.

Peter Pan ,I remember reading a posting in TFM abt the press conference with Adoor after this movie screened in Toronto film festival. I dont remember who posted it. But I remember the post said Adoor saying something like he is happy to work with IR. I also remember, the person said that Adoor said "IlayaRaja,he is a great composer" when the translator couldnt pronounce IR's name.

A few notes after listening to Ramana , EMV CD..
- Vennilavin Peyarai Maatrava is awesome. I was so hung up on Vaanaville that I it took me a while to even move to the next track. This is a beautiful melody and it has some decenet lyrics as well to top it. The songs sounds cool ( inspite of Sadhana's thamil )
- Vaanam Athirave song has some interesting interludes - at first listen, I was'nt sure why that change of rythm/mood in the interlude.. From a fun/children song the interlude changes to a serious fast paced rythm indicative of a looming danger but after seeing the movie review on TV, it blends with the visuals so well. Kudos to the Maestro. It's amazing that the songs are composed ahead of the BGM,one would think why not interrupt the song and then add a BGM - but he keeps things in perspective and does things in advance per the screen play . There are so many songs that he has done this, but "Paadava Un Paadalai " in Naan Paadum Paadal that comes to my mind right away . That interlude where the hero is about to be killed in an accident was a beauty BGM.
- Muthu Muthu in EMV is one great number. The drum roll and the chorus mix is cool.. Karthik has done it well.
- Kuthu Kuthu (EMV ) starts off as a typical chorus folk song - but takes a new level once Sujutha joins the chorus. The pace is terrific and the lines "Anbu ennum nantha vanathil koodukindra ..." and the ending is just beautiful. Just don't be misled to skip the track by the opening part of the song/dialogues.
Still have to get over Gundu Malli in SMV to get a feel for the rest of the songs.
Enjoy
