"...."Asoka, which is being directed by Santosh Sivan for producer Shahrukh Khan, will be released soon. You will get to hear different music from me in Asoka too. In some of my other forthcoming movies, I am even contemplating upon composing ghazals"
I thought Anu Malik was composing for "Ashoka"!

if AM is the composer why is ARR telling he is the MD or is it a different asoka?

yaaro,
this movies recvd good reviews from other good sources! The music was ordinary, I agree!
but such a story is far better than
"bor meets girl, falls in love, parents oppose, defeat parents, get married"
movies that get churned out in hindi!
I though the fundametal premise of cinema is vivid imagination, fantasy and surreality!
The reviwer constantly compares it with real world scenario. he cud have watched the news instead!
everyone knows the story of the movie is impossible so is jurrasic park or ET. It is simple theoritical possibility that we exploit to our imaginations content!
I thought it was a bold and imaginative narrative! shankar does lack some cogency but he makes it upwith his powerful narration and influx of modern day facts with his movies which surprises the audience.
Like I have noted surprise in audiences in this segement
In the interview Anil Kapoor/ Arjun asks
"why hasnt the country/ economy developed at all? why after so mmany years we still have poverty?"
the CM replies " what are you talking about? we have STD/ISD booths, internet. bla bla bla. can u name anyone who has died of hunger in the last 15 years"
I saw both hindi and tamil version in theatres and tamil twice (incidentally, not because of fantism) I saw a knee jerk reaction from audience for this scene.
shankar appeals to a primitive psyche inside everyone. he can think like us on our shoes

Yes as Bharath says, every hindi film critic says that the story is too hard to believe! They should be watching the news then, of course. The imagination Shankar used in Mudhalvan was extremely enjoyable. I loved the movie. Though I havent seen the hindi version, I"m sure it's gonna be a tad more glossy than the tamil one.
Bharath, whats your mail ID?

"Anu Malik's music has an earthy feel to it, reflecting the Mauryan times. Sivan said the music element would also be more acceptable to Western audiences, especially since it was set way back in time. "A song-and-dance routine can be difficult to accept in a modern film, but it's easier in a period film. Besides, music and songs have always been part of our heritage."
Source: Rediff
Looks like what ARR said in the Times of India interview is untrue (that he was comnposing for Asoka)!!!! What went wrong? How did Anu Malik manage to replace ARR?
ARR need not worry!
Anu Malik's 'meejik' for the much-awaited period film Asoka sucks big time! It doesn't definitely belong to a classic film genre. Typical 90s masala music!
And the write-up on the music on Rediff was utter rubbish! "Anu Malik's music has an earthy feel to it, reflecting the Mauryan times."

Just in case you wonder if the title track was nice, it was obviously not composed by Anu Malik. It was Sandeep Chowta (of Satya fame).

The reviews of Nayak just emphasise the basic hypocrisy that is inherent in every movie critic in India. Any movie that comes from India has to be have faults, while foreign films are flawless!!
"Crouching.." received such reviews that I was stunned when I saw the movie. I feel utmost pity for Jackie Chan as he sould have won atleast a dozen Oscars. Mudhalvan was such a class movie and the traffic jam scene could have been taken only by Shankar, esp. the part when the driver brings "jaadhi" into this business.

sridhar raman,
i mostly agree with u. but crouching tiger is not known for its on screen performance. But the special. effects created for the wudan flying people and the imagination with which the concept and scenes involving it were created.
otherwise,
the story is simply a love story which SP Muthraman will churn out in his sleep.
the english subtitles are also confusing.

Sridhar Raman,
First thing, calling mudhalvan a class in itself a joke..."crouching tiger is not all that bad a movie if u know a little about chinese history and martial arts.
To a chinese, mahabharata would be as silly as crouching tiger is for u !
Bharath,
The movie has things which require some knowledge in martial arts...the wire stunts are an attempt to give the characters a larger than life image as we have given to our epic heroes.

read

I was equally stunned when I saw CTHD...in fact the crowd which came out of the theatre here in Bangalore with me was so damn mad about the movie that they were willing to break the reviewer's bones who had given it a maximum of 5 stars in Times of India. It was that 'way-above-the-head' stuff!
And no, my knowledge of martial arts is vastly restricted so I suppose I go with their opinion too. But I also wonder how CTHD did so damn well in places like US (did it in the 1st place?) who seem to be mis-informed about every damn thing in this planet (including the differences between Bin Laden and the 'now-late' Balbir Singh Sodhi)...leave alone the intricacies of Chinese martial arts!

Digression
the "mistaking of an innocent turban head sardar to bin laden" and killing of him makes me to remember an old joke sourly.
in a bar an american, Mr. Alex speilberg and a chinese Mr. Lee were having drink. in the height of intoxication the american started beating the chinese saying "you rotten fellows, you bombed pearl harbour(ph) and killed thousands of american". the chinese kept on saying that he is a chinese and only japanese bombed ph. the cry of chinese disappered in thin air. the american said you chinese, japanese, koreans all look alike.
on the next day the same two were having drink in the same bar. this time it was the turn of the chinese(Lee). He suddenly started beating the american saying that because of you the great ship titanic sank killing hundreds of chinese in the ocean. this time it was the american, alex spielberg who kept on crying saying that "you fool! that was due to iceberg". to that the chinese said "yeah! spielberg iceberg all sound same" and kept on beating the american.
End Digression

Karthik,
CTHD is a beautiful movie in terms of photography and excellent BGM and performances. It's a simple love story ( 3 in fact) set in ancient chinese times laced with exquisite stunts and awesome visual appeal. That's the reason it appealed to a lot of people.
I don't know why people in India could not relate to it. It's our very own bollywood story told excellently, that's all. I hope nothing was cut by the censors.
Thanks.

i liked to movie CTHD but to be honest no one i know of has good things to say about it indian/non-indian. i saw so many people leaving the movie halls in the middle. a lot of jeering comments.
the theatre was also empty on a friday night!
but somehow the movie has been declared hit. maybe it appealed to the NY crowd.
I liked the movie only because of the wonderful way that wudan (voodoo:)) was captured. the way that little girl walks and runs on the sides of the buildings just amazed me.
the oscar also reflects the truth it was not honoured for anything non-technical

Saw "Nayak" in the theatres..the picturization of the songs are mindblowing....BGM is astounding.....saw it again a second time with friends....hats off to Shankar and ARR for excelling....the movie is really a world classic (maybe am too excited..but Shankar is proving to be a one of the most original directors around - story and screenplaywise...)
