IMO, this might help discuss on the musical abilities better since the poem is same & no question of `ability of the lyricist to better synch with the composer' & such factors...the situational requirement still plays a role but cannot be much different as many are period variety...It will be interesting to listen to knowledgeable DFers dissect both the earlier female version of `kAkkai chiRaginile nanda lAlA' with the LV's version in EzhAvadhu manithan (& similar parallels)!

Eden,
I have listened to Kakkai chairaginile from (EM)Ezhavathu Manithan(LV's version). It is a wonderful song.Short(3 mins) but very sweet.KJY's singing is faultless.
Who composed the other version and in which film?
I thought all the Bharathiar songs in EM were great.I think they are the best.My favourite is Veenaiyadi nee enakku(KJY sang well again who is the female singer?)
Has any other version of "veenai" been composed?
Is it just coincidence that IR didn't try any of the songs in EM?Was it Director's choice of songs to be included in Bharathy?
Thanks,
Trend

Try listening to KappalOttiya thamizhan (music: G Ramanathan, Lyr: bharathiyar, 1961) - still sounds fresh after all these years. The track has greater variety, bhavam, and life compared to IR's score.
kaakkai chiraginilE also appears in thirumaal perumai (mus KVM?)

I write this as I listen to "Vande matharam" from Bharathy. It is interesting. From young age, I have always somewhat subconciously remembered this as a song with some kind of an angrier tone to it...undersandably since there is this feeling that Bharathy wrote such songs defying the colonial rule.
But in IR's composing of this song, I seem to sense a feeling of triumph, self-determination and proudness..may be this is what Bharathi intended..I don't know.
But IR's composition of this song is simply superb..There is no other way I want to hear this song. The tonal rendering of phrases "vandae matharam.." reflects triumph and proudness..and "ondu pattal indu vazhvae.." phrase was set in a self-deterministic tone. Just wonderful. I really can't imagine that anyone else could have presented this song this way. Anyone has similar thoughts ?

Excuse me for the typos in the above. I was kind of distracted into the song!

ravi,
I agree.. I could feel the same victorious feeling coming out. Ezhuchi, not frustration or anger is what emerges. Superb.
Trend,
The female lead in 'VeeNayadi Nee Enakku' from 7-vadhu Manithan is Neeraja.
I was hoping IR would include some KAvadi Chindu tune in one of the songs in the film, considering its aptness to the geographical location.
I was disappointed by 'Agni Kunju' very much.
'Nalladhor VeeNai seidhe' in Bharati, though seemingly less-accomplished than its MSV version in VaRumayin NiRam Sivappu, is apt for the situation it is used in...
The MSV number had Poornam reciting it in a Carnatic concert where IRs version is used in a sad situation..
Ninnai Charan Adainthen is originally set to Punnagavarali raga, somewhat like a Magudi tune.
IR's version is very very good, and surprisingly Bombay Jayashri has rendered the lines with the right pronunciation. IR nalla drill VAngi yiruppar!

Trisha,
Thanks for the info.Has Neeraja sung any other famous songs?
In Varumaiyin Niran Sigappu this song comes at the point where Kamal is in abject poverty and regrets for the first time he has walked out on his father. This song also paves the way for their reunion. So,I thought this song was very apt forthe situation and had a poignant effect.SPB's rendition is impeccable.
I haven't seen Bharathy so I don't know about the other version.

Hi Guys,
"Bharathy gets Oscar award(sirantha Vazhkai varalaatru padam)" Kumudam claims.
Go to Kumudam.com and check out the news.Hope the news is true.
Digression,
On the same page there is also a news which says Karunanithi and JJ has agreed to work together for the welfare of TamilNadu and its people.
The rest of the news on the page is optimistic
too.
This makes me to doubt the how reliable Bharathy news is.
I t would be great if somebody can find out if Oscar for bharathy is really true.

Wantedly the director left most famous songs of Bharathiyar in the film Bharathy. He said it in an interview. Also he said it is not about Bharathiyar as a poet but Bharathy as a man, a film about his life.

"Nalladhor Veenai Seidhe" was on the lines of "Mile Sur Mera Tumhara".. I mean the the structure of the song and its tune. But what lent bliss to the song was IR's melifluous voice. It makes you feel "Oh.. what a great poet Bharathi was !! And my God, there are only 13 people attending his funeral...".
Looking forward to hear more such stuff from IR.

Hi all,
My fav. Bharathiar songs in TFM:
DKP - Chinnanchiru Kiliye Kannamma - Manamagal, a beautiful rendering which even now adorns our carnatic kacheris
TMS - Mangiyathor Nilavinile Kanaviluthy Kanden -
Thirumanam (listen to the beginning of this song, TMS has done full justice to it. And then the place where he sings 'Adada o adada'
TMS/LRE and another Telugu singer - Sindhu Nadhiyinmisai Nilavinile - Kai Kodutha Deivam (a superb song set to brilliant music by the incomparable duo of VR)
PBS/PS - Katru Veliyidai kannamma - Kappal Ottiya Tamizhan

Mile sur mera tumhara was composed by Loius banks not Panditji.
Louis banks also composed the tune for Maaza - doing what comes Naturally, guess that was a catchy one those days.
