Hi All,
I was thinking we can have a thread about all the music styles of various MDs.
Basically i don't know much about Pre-IR days may be somebody can throw us light on that.
IR.
Was very good with melodies, fantastic folk numbers, the music was basically simple most of the times. However he did come up with intricate works for Maniratnam. Anjali, Thalapathy, Agni natshatram.
ARR.
Revolutionized TFM music, gave a new dimension and market to Tamil songs.
I wonder the little difference in styles of IR and ARR is IR is very much satisfied to use Tablas, flutes and Violins in most songs, while ARR takes more care to be innovative every time.
Well other MD's show little promise, Kartik raja, Yuvan Shankar raja and Harris jeyaraj are buffoons of TFM.

Bayam, bayam...Ellam siva mayam endru solli vidum, enakku ellam baya mayam...various MDs-nu vandhaaley sandai varumonu bayam!
As far as I could identify, MSV, IR and ARR are the ones who have a distinct style. I definitely cannot analyse it techincally, edho moolaikku ettina alavukku sollalaam! :-)
MSV - Mainly melodies. Leaving the lyrics mostly undisturbed but for some slight percussions. I especially like his transforamtion from an interlude to the singing part. I don't know what makes it different, but then I've always liked it. Some of my favourites : Paalum Pazhamum, Pudhiya Paravai, Aayirathil Oruvan, Kaadhalikka Naeramillai.
IR - Haven't listened to much of IR. Rich melody content enhanced by his use of instruments - nice orchestration. Some of my favourites : Punnagai Mannan, Unnal Mudiyum Thambhi, Sindhu Bhairavi, Udhaya Geetham and Mudhal Mariyaadhai.
ARR - Chinna payyan naan, en favorite! Totally changed TFM, completely. I like him especially for the new sounds which he uses - always surprises. You tend to discover new stuff each time. That always gives a fresh feel to his music. Sollikittae pogalaam, but biased-a theriyum (appuram veena sandai vaera varum!!). So I'll stop with this. Some of my favourites : Dile Se, Taal, Rangeela, Thiruda Thiruda, Alaipaayudhae.
Deva, Sirpy, Manisharma - Semma variety. Niraya MDs oda style theriyum ivunga music-la!
SAR - Unique style. Rombavey "uni"que!
I like YSR and VS songs at times. They give good melodies. But their attempt at western has never impressed me.
HJ, I like his songs too coz if I say I don't like them, then it would mean that I don't like ARRs works. HJ New Albums = ARR Old Albums. Udaney as usual HJ dhaan kaththu kuduthaarnu solla aaramikkadheenga. Abirami, abirami, HJ asingam.

Hi,
Your post was funny.
Well HJ recycles what ever ARR does, that's true a lot.
YSR should be damn lucky guy in TFM, at this rate he will soon join Sirpi and Adityan!
Any news about IR?
Its quite a long time he came with some magic work like his 80's?
Or is he still happy to do movies like Kamaraj?

Aaha..CP sonnamaadhri idhu oru dangeraana thread. Quicksandla nadakkara maadhri nadakkanum. Anyway, ennoda opiniona solraen.
MSV: Simply brilliant in melodies. Not that proficient in fast numbers. Minimal use of instruments. Song ruled by singers alone (mostly).
IR: King of melodies. Gave life to BGM. Not too much of experimentation. Non-vocal sections of a song had some prominence.
ARR: God! Incredible variety. Has touched almost all genres. Broke the language barrier. Unexpected interludes. Stopped the dominance of a single singer regime, more opps for hordes of singers. More effort put to compose songs than BGM.

MSV-TKR- broke the traditions of carnatic music and started giving lite music.....imagine those days, wat kind of veriyans wud these carnatic music fans wud have been.......
IR-the master....he is the first MD in Tamil to give a soul-stirring touch to music......can give tunes even while facing shoaib akhtar's deliveries......
ARR- the mercurial tamilian........probably the most popular Tamilian in the world right now.....his achievements are as long as river nile..... for me the sweetest was the conquering of Mumbai's HFM......i think it is the highest honour for any tamilian.....imagine, till now TN has not produced a single PM for india....being no.1 in india is always gr8....

Nobody listens to pre-MSV composers?? Lightening of TFM started with G.Ramanathan IMO...MSV-TKR explored it further...

Music Thinker,
IR's music is no where near what it was, IMO. Probably he is not able to keep up with current trend or whatever. He gives good stuff occassionally, like in Virumandi and Pithamagan. But even in Pithamagan, the "Piraye" song was VERY VERY close to "Putham Pudhu Poo Poothadho" from Thalapathy. So, he just comes up with good stuff now and then. Even that is nowhere near the stuff he produced earlier.
Even though Rahman is slow, the main reason people like him is for the variety he gives. You constantly hear new sounds when you listen to his music. This is not the case with MSV/Ilayaraja, IMHO. Rahman's music is more rhythm based where as MSV and Ilayaraja mainly relied on the tunes.
MSV used little instruments during the singing and kept it all in store for the interludes.
Ilayaraja had the tune blended with proper instruements used which enhanced his content.
Rahman mostly lets his instruments do the talking barring soul stirring melodies.
Thoppus,
Unga alavukku enakku vayasu aagaliye, enna panna?! Periyavara, nallavara, neenga dhaan sollanum adhellam! :-)
Just Wondering,
