I dont know how much authentic are these reviews. Some one wrote about pooncholai in glorious terms but it ended out in a disappointing note for me. It featured some of most mediocre songs I have ever listened to. So guys please be objective and dont get carried away

I don't know when puNNiyavathi was released but it is one of the
best (among his many best!!! - thanks gOpAl) that IR has produced
in recent times. It has three great songs (1) oru AlampUvu aththip
pUva pAththadhuNdA, (2) kAththE kAththE en mAman manasukkuLLE
konjam pORiyA pORiyA, (this is probably the sweetest song
I have heard after coming to the US - 3.5 years; it was like
watching "Shall We Dance"), (3) panjup pOla nejam idhu paththikkichchu
paththikkichchu mAmA , jAnaki does wonders. There is another
amman song mAyi mAyi which is semi rustic. The three I have
listed are must-listen for any music lover and more so for
IR fans.

This week in SUN TV is "Mani Rathnam wAram" -
decided to watch all of them just for IR's BG music.
Yesterday, they showed Nayagan. Couple of places
IR has used some instrument to bring out the
kobam/Athiram/veruppu feeling - same music in both
places - it was really great.

I heard songs of Guru, Yathramozhi. Simply exceptional. I heard a flsh news from India. Guru was sent to Oscar awards few months back. There it is shortlisted to next round. Normally our films bounce at the first round itself. I read that the music is based on some foreign country. I have forgotten the name of tha country, some europian country. Raja called professionals from there and asked them to play the composings.

Its better to buy the "Nammoora manthara hoove" album. Wow! wonderful recording.
The recording quality of Kangalin vaarthaigal is verrrrrrryyyyyyyyy verrrryyyyyy worst. The great HMV produced this cassette. I threw that cassette in the dustbin :-(((((

Listen to 'pOOngAtrE' from kizhakkum mErkkum? A real gem from Raaja. The main aspect of this song is chorus. It seems Raaja is hooked on to this ghost kind of chorus. It's really amazing!!

My favorite songs in Kizhakum Merkum includes Poongatre by Bhavadha, Kathum Kadale, there is a song by SPB & chitra (I thought this one was great), Kathirika and Vayasupillai. I bought this cassette from India and I like it so much that I am buying the CD now. I thought the entire collection of songs in this album are excellent.

PadikkattumA by Sjanaki is great! Kalakkufies!
Raja picks his songs and goes into bewitching interludes! The aforesaid fall in this category.
Rest of the songs are OK and good nAttuppura pAdalgaL. I ll get back on another song.
OK to good for IR fans.
Annan:: vayasuppuLLa by IR is great. kanmani by Bavatharini is good. IR version of this song is very good. Aalamaraththu kiLiyE is very catchy with great beats. Oththai roobAi by swarnalatha is remake of Aattama thErOttama from Capt Prabakaran.
Just ditto. No difference!! I cant understand why IR is doing such repetition!!!!
This audio is OK to good for IR fans.
After Ka MariyAdhai, Kizhakkum Met. has impressed me a lot. Another masterpiece from IR. I'll be back.

kaNNadhAsan kAlaththukkuppin padappAdalgaLil ilakkiya nayam/kaviththuvam illai endRu pOna vAram nAn ungaLidam theriviththa varuththam "thenpANdich chingam" kEttadhum kuRaindhadhu. The lyrics by karuNAnidhi(?) are excellent (especially in vArththai ondRu). The music matches and enhances the lyrics in all the songs. kavidhaikku isai amaiththadhu pOl therigiradhu; if so, it's really terrific and hope the trend continues!
Thoroughly enjoyed kAdhal nilavE from Vasuki sung by MV & Subha, since it was like listening to yester-year's C.S.Jeyaraman singing to the 90s music. Fun!
kAththE kAththE from puNNiyavathy reminded me very much of the classic chendhoorappoovE in spirit and the mood it creates. Beautiful!
kizhakkum mERkum stood apart in your entire selection: sounds much better than kAdhalukku mariyAdhai [die-hard IR fans, uyirOda vittudunga please :-))]. poongAtRE is a listening experience, in terms of both melody and orchestration. Bhavadharini's voice sounds great too--I was very pleasantly surprised. kaththum kuyilE is a close second. (iLayarAjA 13 pAttu pOttirukkaradhA kaLanjiyam sonnadhA gnAbagam; eththanai pAttu cassette-il irukkiradhu, Rajan?)
ArArO from veeraththAlAttu is a soulful song, loved the spot where iLayarAjA picks up from Swarnalatha and continues. vAdippatti is yet another authentic rustic song which brought back the nostalgia of our grAmaththuth thiruvizhA (that was real naiyyAndi meLam for percussion, right?)

In fact pOOngAtre by BhavathArini in Ki ME. is too good! Yet, the interludes in Kaththum kuyilE just take over!!! But Bhavatharini's song is pretty tough to handle i believe and it pops up in the ranking. And, as you said, its an experience.
AarAro from VThAlaattu is yet another good one from IR. But, I love IRs version.

Ilaiyaraaja just kalakkifies in this album. Out of 10 songs, 9 songs are enjoyable from the first listening itself. My vote goes for 'sAndhu pOttum', sung by Arunmozhi and swarnalatha. Wonderful tune and funny lyrics. This song has come in three versions and guess what, all of them are good. As Kanchana said, I like this album better than 'kAthalukku mariyAthai'.

Some corrections:
Out of 10, 8 songs are good, not 9 songs. 'sAndhu pottum' doesn't have a third version. Three songs in this album have two versions, so somewhat i was confused. And Kanchana was talking about 'kizhakkum mErrkum' and i messed up that statement with 'vEErath thAlAttu'.

I was able to get some of the new CDs from H&M enterprises in Oklahoma. They had already sold out "Kizhakkum Meirkkum", "Annan" combos and I got the last "Veeraththaalaattu" CD( sorry! ).
I haven't received the "VT" CD yet, but, already got the "VT" cassette from India yesterday which I will be listening soon.
"Kaliyoonjal" CD is available in H&M.
Yennanga Kanchana, "IR Weekend"aa? Orey IR's songsaaga keittu very objective comments koduthirukkeenga? Yes, I can not stop singing the "KaathalNilavey" song of "Vasukhi" - romba, romba pudichuppoachu. What a lovely song with MV singing like CSJ and (Pop-Singer) Subha giving haunting humming interludes - wonderful. I am sure, the song would have gone unnoticed in "Namathu Thaayagham" because the movie flopped miserably. What a waste!!!

The only disappointment of IR's albums in the recent times, is "Naanum Oar Indian". I got this cassette yesterday and listened to it. It did not impress me much( some songs rather made me feel like how I had felt about IR's early 90 albums - totally outdated tunes! ). I will have it give it a few more tries before deciding the fate of that album( but, given that the recent IR albums have been great hits in the first listening, this is a total disappointment! )

I've listened to only ArArO and vAdippatti from veeraththAlAttu, and both appealed to me. vAdippatti seems like a pure adaptation of the feet-tapping nayyANdi mELam from our villages. If the other songs are of the same/better caliber, then this album (along with kizhakkum mERkum) will be better than kAdhalukku mariyAdhai, as you've said.

So, we had a TFM fiesta starting from MSV-TKR classics to IR classics to the most recent IR works (the latter, thanks to a friend). Amazing how we have to "switch gears" when we go across TFM eras even within the same MDs!

Out of 13 cassettes I got from India, the first one I listened to was "NOI" and I was very disappointed. Next I heard "Ka Ka" and the songs are good, especially "Kaasu Meiley Kaasu Vachu" and "Saravanabhava"( I got to see the excerpts of "Ka Ka" and these two songs from a Video I got from India ), then I listened to "VT" and what a song that was by Swarnalatha, "Aaraaro Aaraaro"( this album is great! ), sounds like this song could be a big candidate for national award(IMHO). Now, I am listening to "Ponnamanam" by S.A.Rajkumar( a couple of songs are good )

Listened to the new entries in IR's site. The vIrath thAlAttu song was magnificient. Haven't heard such a dappAngkuththu for a very long time. Superb.
The 'aNNan' and 'the.pA singkam' songs were also great. The latter was broadcast once on local radio.

Yes, 'sAndhu pottum' is a great dappangkuththu song I've heard recently. That song caught my attention from the very first listening. There is a second version of this song but it has different lyrics and sung by Gangai amaran and Sailaja('vAdipatti'). very funny song, listen to it if you get a chance. But my favorite song of 'vEErath thAlAttu' is 'padikattumA'. Great song, don't miss this one.
In Annan, 'Alamaraththu kiliye' is very good. For the past couple of days I'm listening only these two albums continuously. Couldn't stop playing so I've given the cassette to one of my friends and asked him to keep it for some time :((

i listened to Saanthu Pottum from VT (thanks MPR).
It sounds like " Kokki vachen koki" in Naatupura paatu - i mean the lines and the style of the song. Are they both " Villu paatu ".???

Is dappAnguththu chennai folk? I don't think so. Then how do you describe a dappAnguththu song? oru pAttu kEttu nEEngal Ada thOnrinAl, athu dappAnguththAga irukkalAm including karagAttam, gAnA etc... 'sAnthu pottum' is karagAtta type song and doesn't come under villuppAttu. In villuppAttu, they will use different kind of instrument.

IR-Trousar combo deliver again. It is a long time since I listened to a song like vayasuppuLLa or aalamaraththu kuyilE.. The other IR hits of recent times didn't have this kind of flavour.. they were either great non-kramaththu tunes, like ennai thaalaatta or kaththum kuyilE, or beatsy kalakkal stuff like veera thaalaattu. This movie is vintage IR of a different bouquet.

Wow! I listened to the album recently and was very pleasant to here to the songs. Marubadiyum gramathu manam kamazhum paadalgal with a lot difference in the music and orchestration.

Kathum Kuyiley.. The interludes are great in this
song. Especially the first one is very imaginative
and also not a typical IR format. Is it Veenai
or Mandolin?
Also, the interludes in "Alli SundaraValli Laali"
in "KangaLin VaarthaiGaL" are simply out of the
world. The way he has mixed split chorus & humming
in the second interlude is beautiful and also
very controlled and tight first interlude.I love
that song.

All songs from K VArthaigaL are just 'NammoorA mandhArahoovE' songs. In fact, its kannada to thamizh remake, i believe. As you are from Bgl, you must be knowing about NMhoovE hit in '96

yennOda ulagam vEru kEtteengaLa? yenna interludes, yenna sOgam? great. sameebaththil 'ayya voodu' and
'pudhu ponnu sirikkudhu' are great folk beats from IR. You can discuss at length about these two songs. But, eventhough IRs ayya voodu is my like, SPB has rendered the latter song beautifully. THe transition from tabla to the unorthodox drum beat is too good. The fading of the song in the end with an oldie singing reminds you of some villagers fading in their bullock carts into the dim horizon in dusk. God! What a song!!
Kooda porandha is one song, in which IR has really changed his voice, to suit the occasion. Lots of sOgam!! Thank IR that the song is a small one, else, everyone should have a towel in hand!! I have not listened to this kind of sOga song from IR in recent times. Total pathos.
The real pathos is the movie, i believe. I read the Kizhakkum Metkum movie review in Kumudham.
IvvaLavu kEvalamAna kadhai (in fact, no kadhai)
acting enrAl kilo evvaLavu ena kEtkum nadigar, nadigaigaL!! (That Napolean! oh no!!). Kumudham says "eppozhudhum pAduvadhudhAn dEvayAniyin (heroine) vElai".
IR wasted totally!!!

Kathunkuyile... interludes. It is not Veenai or Mandolin. It is Electric Guitar (modified) and is played by Prasanna. If the piece sounds different from Raja's usual grammer, it is because Prasanna himself is a composer and may have introduced elements of his imagination.

him play at our College Festival. He was too good.

You must know Film News Anandan. I got a list from him covering IR's films (all languages) year by year with date of release of each film. From "Annakkili" to "Raman Abdulla" the list shows 726 films. Would you like me to mail (by Canada Post) you the list? Now I am wondering how to get ongoing info ... any ideas? to keep updating it.
I know "Kadavul" "Guru" "KMariyadhai" "Kizakkum M-kkum" were released after Aug '97 but don't know dates.
Let me know if I can help in any way to contribute to the effort of compiling.
I am just beginning to fully read the great stuff you guys have to say about IR, hence this late reaction.

Some subtle things abt KM songs !!!
I listened the KM CD yesterday. I found that the pathos version of "Anantha kuyilin pattu .." to be great. Especially when the song pauses for a few seconds and then Sujatha.? (the CD does'nt say who the singer is.?)breaks down .. It's MOVING.!
Also a few other things I noticed.
#. The opening short peice for Oh Baby Baby song is terrific. I liked it better than the song itself. It goes like this
..Viliyil Vizhi mothi ithaya kathavu onru thiranthathe
Iravu pahalagi ithayam kiliyagi paranthathe
Oh nejame nejame ..Yaar thoothu selvatho.
The beauty of this peice is the way the female voice sinks in at the background but with a finite delay after the male voice. Amazing !!

This is like a choir and they way it is mixed with the song is excellent . More effect on a good CD player - I tried this with a couple of systems.
Especially first when the kid sings it's like a kid reciting a rhyme. Then it slowly turns into sort of a catholic prayer (choir) and then blends with the original song beat . Mottai u r toooo much.
Can anyone guess what other songs had this kind of an arrangement . I can remember a couple of IR songs . Also one by Shankar ganesh.Any guesses.??
