In my case,my father is very fond of film music and no one in our family have any knowledge of carnatic music..we just listen to film music irrespective of the MD's.
we'll record the all hit songs at that particular time.till my school days i dont admire any MD..just i hear and hum some songs which are hit at that time..
after i joined my college i came to know about the music club in our colege..i used to attend their events.
As our music club head is a hardcore IR fan 80% of the songs played will be from 80's IR hits..
slowly i started listening to IR songs
I'll sit and watch IR hits in sun tv till 3:00 clock early morning.
then i started writing IR songs in a paper to record it in a cassette.
now i am a big big fan of IR and proud to be one amoung thousands.

oh god i thought iam the only IR(turned) fan after arr entry, before that i dont know anything about music all i used to ponder was how this man (IR) manages to make different tunes, after release of roja i thought the music was by IR until when i looked at the cassete cover i was suprised a lot i liked all the songs of roja, another thing, my uncle was a HCIRF he wanted to become a MD he used to analyse his songs, it is he who planted the IR seed in my subconcious mind but after the entry of arr i thought here is another MD like IR
but my uncle was very firm that no one could equal him, it is then i started listening to IR music more sincerly some four or five years passed
i gradually began to like love IR music, ARR had some great hits which i just liked but the transformation came when bombay, and ellame en rassathan was released i listened to "sandana kattukulle" first time in oliyum oliyum and next time i heard it some where in railway station thats all! the IR voice in that song did something to me which i cant explain the song just swept my mind and soul
the tranformation was done while ARR took over as NO 1. IR took over my mind from then on day to day iam confirming myself that IRR is the best ever musician to have lived on this earth(i have also listened to some of the beethoven, vivaldy)for the simple reason no body can sweep my mind as he does but one thing while the most lovable person for me is IR,the most thankful person is ...ARR,for without him i woudn't have realised IR music in myself .

For what it is worth, based on the article on Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer (the 'pithAmaha' of Carnatic Music) in 'Kumudam Junction' 01-01-2004 (available online), it is mentioned that, SSI had IR's photo in his bedroom facing his bed - so he always wakes at IR's face.

For what it is worth, you're not supposed to broadcast TFM news, MR. Paul Harvey!! :-)

Guys..the important thing is IR's music has that emotional impact. It is probably an grandly orchestrated piece like in Guru (malayalam) or a very simple melody like 'panam pattum vazhkaiya' with some tabla backing (mostly probably his tabla backed songs will have some bass guitar backing). IR's songs are like a baby ..they are a born with a character sometime cute looking ..sometimes not. Others might make cute toys..you marvel at the finish, the perfect nose, the rosy chubby cheeks and you wonder at the technology used to create that very realistic looking eyes..But on the other hand..if you hold the baby in your hands and play with it you forget its imperfections. It is either your baby or you adopted it..it grows with you and becomes part of your life. You will never part with that baby..More cute looking toys might come and go. But you never give up your baby..
