Once asked about how he feels on great directors like Balachander, Maniratnam etc avoiding him, ilaiyaraaja replied,"Paravayila. Idhanaala yaarukku nashtam. Neenga solra yella periya directors'kum naan work pannaadhadhaala enakku nashtam kidayaathu.Naan paatukku en vaelaiya seyyaren.Yaen, eppo naan work panra puthu directors ellam oru naal innoru bharathiraja'va, illa Balachandara, illa maniratnam'ma aagalamilla?"
words of wisdom from the maestro. Cheer up guys, Ilaiyaraaja has an universe of music inside him. Mark my words, all these big directors would one day return back to this greatest genius ever on earth. In the release function of "kallikaatu ithikasam", a story written by vairamuthu, Bharathiraaja spoke thus,"idhu pola oru kadhaiya nee mattum thaan ezhuda mudiyum. Idha padamaaka ennal mattume mudiyum. Idhukku rathamum naalamum'ma (blood & veins) isaiamaikka avan (you know who!!!) oruthanaal mattume mudiyum!!!!!!!"

Because ARR is the manthra in the market, they had to take
him instead of Ilaiyaraaja. ARR is the next best
after Raja, but as you know ARR's music has got
the ultra-modern touch, Arr is preferred. If Raaja
starts giving that modern appeal, he is sure
to take over ARR. Don't know why IR is not
responding to the modern wave and change his style. We all
know it's not a big deal for him to.

pardhu...what do you exactly mean by the words " responding to modern wave and changing styles"...IMHO i guess a music director should be more worried about how his music gels with the film. For instance, do you mean to say "Bharathi" film should have songs that use modern music equipment & electronic sounds? ilaiyaraaja's music fits in glove to the ambience of the movie (or you could call the boundaries of the movie).

I used to be a great fan of IR's music ... the late 80s and the early 90s were filled with beautiful songs and wonderul music that can never be repeated by other MDs ... somehow, i feel that IR does not seem to make that type of music anymore - his modern music as well as his sentimentals don't seem to have that same tug as they used to; now some of his songs sound out of sync

:-) Kas....are we, the fans out of synch or raja is out of synch?

Kas...just another thought on your reply....
let us take his modern music, say "Nilavu Pattu" from kannukkul Nilavu. A trendy pop western ambience. But he has used "Thodi" raaga scale, in western music ambience. What's more, he has used "thodi" raga notes but gives "sindhu bhairavi" feel. So, a carnatic based song that uses one raaga's scale, but gives a taste of another raga, and yet set to a western music ambience.
his sentimentals - well, do you say this even after "enge sellum intha paathai" in sethu and "ninnai charan adainthen" from Bharathi or "thangachi thangachi enga pore" from Kutti?

Velramanan, what i mean to say is that its like his songs don't flow as they used to - the out of sync that i'm talking about is exactly what u said - thodi raga in Western ambience with Sindu Bhairavi feel; why the fusion? He's great on his own.

Kas :-)....you say,"why the fusion, he's great on his own..."...Kas, do you think he has to take efforts to create fusion stuff...it comes effortlessly for him....That fusion in "nilavy paatu" is not any effort from him, as he has said repeatedly so many times,"ennakkul ezhumbhum sathangalai naan ungalukku appadiye kodukkiren...athai neengal inna raagam engireergal, inna thaalam engireergal...naan appadi ninaithu isai amaipadhillai...yaetho sakthi ennul ennai iyakkugiradhu..."

Dear pals,
I , in fact all those non-Tamil HC-Raaja Fans, would be immensely happy, if the English version of the Rev. Raaja's comments are given here.
Believe me, I am too curious to know what Raaja said. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease do this favour.

Prashanth, a loose translation:
"That's OK, who's the loser here? Not me, I don't lose anything by not working with these big directors, I simply continue doing my job...why, one of these new directors whom I currently work with might one day become another BR, KB or MR, is it not?"

on: Mon Oct 22 05:43:44 EDT 2001
and Prashanth..if you are wondering about BR, KB and MR they are Bharathiraja, K.Balachandar and Maniratnam....
and regarding the translation of the second part of the message where Bharathiraja speaks on ilaiyaraaja
-----
Bharathiraaja: (said in a book release function, releasing the book written by ace film lyricist Vairamuthu)," Only you can write such a story. Only i can direct this film. And only he (you know who) can create music for this as 'blood & veins'."

Thanks Eden and Ramanan,
Lots of thanks pals, I un'stand Ramanan was joking with reg. to KB, MR, BR initials, I knew them.....
Anyways, my urge to learn Tamil is ever increasing, it does usually, whenever I find postings reg. Raaja's news, comments etc in Tamil Web sites viz, vikatan, webulagam etc...I excitedly pounce on the URL, but oops find everything Tamilmayam.
I un'stand its tiresome to post news in English if any one ever proposes to. I look forward to the day when I can read Tamil, wish me good luck !!!
I take this opportunity to request all fans of Raaja to kindly post any of his comments, statements in English finally, when ever they like to post. Will u please???
regards and Thanks
Prashanth

please, there is a subtle point in this thread. It is about "the issue of big directors returning back to ilaiyaraja" and not "from where they are returning back from!!"...so no need to bring in a.r.rehman here please. That is not the purpose of this thread.

right mr NaNbaN,
Nowadays music is going worst..they are not giving original tunes.they are taking it from english albums, other films..etc.getting originality is main thing. Its sure after IR we couldn't expect about cine music.daily sombody entering ..they are having some tunes for that time.after that they couln't do anything..they are copying from others...,they are not music directors....whats u'r opinion..

dear thavaraja sundar
you have got Nanban wrong...he didn't talk anything about IR...he just states that todays films generally do not have the heaviness that was there in 80s. (like mullum malarum, udhiri pookal or even something like Mahanadhi)..
