when i heard "kadalukku mariyadhai" the first time i like the song "enna thalatta varuvalo" instantly , the others songs took time for me to like them . I really get this doubt becos in the PP thread ,there are posting that say " u have to keep listening to the songs to like it " is this really the way to like a song ?

IT is usuallly the other way. If I like a song, I listen to it over and over.

Rahman's music is like a divine concept. You get to see more layers unfolding as you listen to it more and more.
Since it is very difficult to understand a divine concept similarly it is also difficult to say what the final effect is.But if you keep on listening to it salvation is sure.:-)

MS and other DFers,
IMHO...
Those of us who have been used to the old film songs will have a problem in getting to like ARR songs on first listening.
If u notice, IR had very simple tunes and invariably the interludes and the orchestration was not all that complex. Further, each song had a particular feel to it and that was maintained throughout that song.
In today's world of music with ARR, u will find that the music is layered and very rich. There are carnatic sangatis fused with folk and with wcm and what not ! The tempo of the song changes from each interlude to the next and so does the orchestration. And no to mention, ARR freely mixes Raagas and thus registering the 'feel' of the song and noticing its nuances takes a while.
And since we are all not blessed with that multi-dimensional reception, its normal that it takes a while b4 we can decide if teh song is good or bad. but i can assure you one thing from my experience of listening to ARR songs right from Roja in 92 - The 'learning curve' does get steeper as u listen to more songs.
what do u guys think ?
Cheers,
R

even a music teacher at school, who loves all that 'high stuff' like mozart, bach and beethoven told us, that good music u can identify when u only like it after hearing it many times...and then u will like it for a long, long, time...till ur interest in it disappears slowly (but after a long, long time)....and on the other hand...not so good music u'll like at first hearing, but after hearing it a couple of time, u all of a sudden lose interest in it...(like some of devas song, they sound kind of cool first time u hear it, then u can't hear it anymore after 4 or 5 times hearing it)
this is a fact which music experts have found out (sounds funny, but is true)...
and so i agree totally with trend and ragapriyan...

raycas..
i think u keep listening until ur unravel the mystery of the song and then find it no more interesting.thats whats happening to ARR songs... u dont like them the first time u hear them ..but on repeated hearings it sounds really good and then it fades away..i dont why ..i have not been able to hear his music from earlier films barring roja thiruda thiruda and bombay...but good songs...even if u loose interest after repeated hearings are the one you would identify listening too after some time..becos u like dit instantaneously. for the fist time...

"i have not been able to hear his music from earlier films barring roja thiruda thiruda and bombay...".
This is not fair. Even if we find it hard to like his old songs, we should not give up !! Just like listening to his new songs repeatedly until we like them, we should do for the old ones too. At some point, they will definitely regrow on us.

ragapriyan:
I have absolutely no problem appreciating ARR. But inspite of my repeated hearing, I do find some songs do not make a dent on my mind. Many songs of ARR are instantaneous charmers. e.gs:
(1) thoda thoda malarndhadhenna
(2) minnale nee vandhadhenadi
(3) July maadham vandhaal
(4) sambo sambo sambo
(5) Sakiye needhaan thuNaiye
(6) oh veNNila..
A lot of ARR's stuffs...But there are some songs like injirungo which I find perenially unappealing inspite of being forced to hear it for many times.

Has anyone felt that you like a part of a song very much - ex, the interludes or the prelude or the pallavi, but find the rest of the song unappealing? I have seen this happen to me for quite a few songs, esp. some Deva's numbers (Thiruppadhi Ezhumalai etc..) and some of ARR's numbers (Hojaye...)

My experience with ARR's music and others' music has been the other way around: I tend to like ARR's songs from the very first, but not quite so with Raja's. Raja's numbers grow on you (on an average, of course there are many that you like from the beginning).
I think that is because ARR's music is more catchy.

liking a song after (forced) repeated listening is the same as the feeling of patriotism one feels after continued watching of fox/cnn/(any propogandist) news.

Quite a few opinions. I agree with the fact, it takes time to appreciate ARR music, because of his complex algorithms. I categorize songs into three types, the first one, which you appeals to you on the first time, it never bores you even if you listen to it again and again for a long, long time; second type are those which does not seem to be very good at first, but on repeated hearings sound to be really good and those third type which are nothing but insipid, cacophonies which never appeals to you. IMHO songs of the first time are the only songs you are going to like for ever. These are the evergreen songs, you would want to hear any number of times without getting bored. I would definitely say that ARR did show a great variety in his earlier songs of Roja, Gentleman, Pudhiya Mugam and Duet and songs in these movies fall into the first categories. Most of his songs fall into the second category. Even today, some of his good songs take to time to catch up with me, may be he is changing his style or is not able to be as prolific as he was during his early days. However, some of his relatively new songs like "Azhagana Rakshasiyae" attracted me the first time I heard it. But PP songs, I feel belong to the second type and they are no match for Duet. I do not agree that one who is used to listening old songs would not like ARR songs first because of the complexity in his composition. Have not some of the western pop/rock appeal to us the first time we heard it like the "Rasputin" or MJ's "Beat it". They might not have had fusion of east and the west like ARR's, but they did have complex loops. Some of ARR's songs were great on hearing the first time, eg. Roja and Duet. I think its the "feel" which a song generates makes you listen to it again and again. I agree that whether a song appeals to you or not on hearing at the first instance depends on one's taste and perspective. I do not feel that listening to a song repeatedly is a requisite for liking a song as MS says its usually the other way round.

Just an errata in the first line, please read it as " I do not agree with the fact that, it takes time to appreciate ARR music, not that because it is complex, because they inherently might not be that very good."

I find it really very interesting. Duet which almost every bosy appreciate and and else where, where reviewed as "bad composition of ARR" by Aanandha Vigadan. This, I won't forget, because, AV is one of the renowned magazine and I was terribly shocked to read the review of Duet film in that in which they said that "ARR oda sarakku theendhu pochchu. Ketta paatte thirumbi thirumbi potta rasigargal mannikkamaattanga." (The words were some what like this.....I translate......ARR's stuff seems to have got over, if he keeps delivering repeated tunes like this fans will not excuse.)
I still maintain AV in high regards, but they made similar review to uzhavan also (leave that here now). But this one was really rude. What is to many, ARR's finest delivery, is a simple no ball to AV. Have any body read that review and still remember?

CF, I remember their review for Uzhavan. They had mentioned that, except for "Kannalla Kannalla" none of the other songs had any tune. I don't remember their review for duet...
But they had praised his BGM work for Bombay - they referred to it as "dhigilootum pinnani isai"

AV trashing Duet's music - that was not the first time. They had a similar opinion about Nizhalgal too.

If I remember correctly, ARR had himself given the reason as something like ' u need to get used to something that u have not heard before and something that's very different from all that you were used to' ... This does make sense since lot of his songs had the same effect on me .. even thiruda thiruda seemed like vague ( in the very first hearing :) ) blame my musical sensibilities but I think it's true with ARR's music ...
Even with IR, this is true with some of his songs where he explores different zones than we are used to .. .for eg., 'time' songs were different in the first hearing and with repeated hearings, they turned out to be gems ..
