Why Ilayaraja's Music Does Not Appeal to the Younger Generation

I have always wondered this.
If age factor is the issue, how is it that Deva who should be the in the same age group, is able to command quite a following?
Please do not insult the yonger generation by refering to deteriorating music taste.

Although there are some youngsters who prefer Ilayaraja, the number is very small.
Most youngsters prefer ARR, Deva, HJ, SAR, Vidhyasagar, etc.

Generally Ilayaraja's genre of music do not seem to hold the younger crowd. Why do you think this is?

  I 100% agree with you. I am great fan of IR - but his music does not appeal to me from early 1990s.well, there are couple bright spots even after 1990 - but I think IR golden era was 1978-1986... It deteoriated during 1986-1990. Mostly crap after 1990.

  Spot on. Out his latest one Kasi was V.Good, Kaakai Sirahinile was excellent (Parthiban film), which for some reason, was not talked about much :(

  wrong timeline, it has to be after 1992, because IR gave megahit musicals in 91-92 period. Anyway his so called crap has a lot to do with the by-then dying art of situational music. Even though each year after 92 he has given one unforgettable album, people still say he gives crap and he is no longer appealing. I wonder why the same logic does not apply to other so-called successful current mds who churn out endless crap every year?

  For your info!!! My son and his friends when gathered for His Birthday, they were singing Konji Konji fromVeera( released in 199/94).Also they were sining Ilan Kaatru Veesuthey fromPithamagan and Unnai Vida fromVirumandi also Viru viru virumandi..
  They are just 8-10 yrs age group.
  My son, is capable of fining how many of his (Harrish Jeyaraj) own tune Harrish Jeyarajiscopying.
  
  Go Chek with a good ENT our ears..
  Also better consult a psychiatrist..

  The biggestjoke is Deva ( though an able MD) in TFM he just makes copy fo Raaja's music. If that as per the tread initiator is appealing to youngsters, then he accepts that Raaja is still appealing.
  
  But...by any chance does the person( initiator) knows anything about music.
  
  Listen to the songs of Raaja composed during 70's or any period. Its refreshing even now

  Nobody like IR or ARR can beat them...

  Younger generation think that any song is to be accompanied by BEATS and tempo. Their mind are tuned only to the beats. Take a keyboard.Select any preset rhytm, set a tune and they will love it. Now it is very difficult to mend them.
  Do u think, great song like 'Anthi Mazhai..' or 'Ilamthalir thulir vidum' etc will be welcomed today, if it is a new release? NO.
  'Oo Podu' or 'Manmathata rasa' or 'Dhimsu Kattai' will easily outweigh them. That is the order of the day. It may soon change.
