bayarea's radio (FM90.1) program mostlytamil ( http://www.mostlytamil.com ) is going to have a special program with Karthik Raja soon. I don't know the full details. If you have questions for KR, you can email them to askspecialguest@mostlytamil.com (I hope I got that right). Maybe their website will give more details.

'Bland and tame' review is by Khalid Mohammed, the well known Times of India reviwer. He must be some sornai illaatha jenmam.
I think the adjectives he used would have been better used to describe the movie he made recently - 'Fiza'.

khalid mohammed is known for his biases towards the khans...He's been criticised by quite a few ppl for that. This fool gave gupt some 4 marks or sthg !! Can u believe this guy said minnalE's song s are "typical dinchak" type of music....while anu malik in asoka, recreates the music of mauryan era !!! 4.5 or 5 stars for a piece of SH*T called Asoka !

Pandian,
Dil mera is in Raga Hamsanadham. And Sadhana Sargam has done a good job rendering it. The solo violin and tyhe overall arrangement is amazing!
As usual the northies ignored this melody! In fact some reviewers of the movie went to the extent of calling it bad music! That's the taste!!!
Other good examples of songs in Hamsa Nadham are:(I think IR is the only one who has handled this raga in so many songs)
1. Sorgame Endraalum (Ooru vittu ooru vandhu)
2. Om Namaha (Idhayathai Thirudhathe)
3. Isayil Thodanguthamma (Hey Ram)
4. Minnaaram Maanathu (Guru-Malayalam)
5. Thendral Vandhu Ennai Thodum (Thendrale Ennai Thodu)
Karthik Raaja used this raga in a Kannada film (Hoo Anthiya Ooohoo Anthiya) "Chanda Ee Chanda" is a wonderful song, sung impeccably by Madhu Balakrishnan.

Another department that gets completely sidelined in the process is music. There seems to be no scope for the songs and the tracks seem forced on the storyline.

Peter Pan,
All the songs that u said, are NOT in HAMSANADHAM. coz, HAMSANADHAM doesn't have a "DHA". Check it again.

on: Tue Apr 2 01:28:58 EST 2002
Isai Adimai, actually Peter PAn is correct. Hamsanadham does have a Dha. Its arohanam is S R M P D N S. It is a Vivadi Raaga that features Chatsruthi DHa as opposed to chathusruthi Dha. It is in effect Dha 3

Tell me one Keerthana that is of raaga, Hamsanadham and has a Dha in it. I am 200% sure, it doesn't have a Dha.

Isai Adimai,
HamsanAdham doesn't have Dha.
It is a janya ragam of Neetimathi.
ArOhaNam: S R2 M2 P N3 S
AvarOhaNam: S N3 P M2 R2 S
'Pantu Reeti' is a popular Tyagayya kriti in this rAgam.
However I stand by my above listing of film songs.
They are all set to HamsanAdham. I'd appreciate it if you could show me the exact places where 'Dha'ivatam shows up in all the above songs.
Thanks

Peter Pan,
check out the caps in the following lyrics. Those are the places where, Dha is seen.
Sorgame enraallum adhu naMOOORA pOlavaruma.
isaIyil thoDANgudamma viRAha naaDAgame.
thenRAL vandu ennai thodum. aaha saTHAM inri mutham idum.
I am pretty sure, there is a raaga as Hamsanadham+DHa. I am trying to get its name.

IsaiAdimai,
Thanks for pointing out the DHAs in the 3 songs.
But I understand that the original Hamsanadham is not pentatonic, and is supposed to have Dha3, as pointed out by Ganesh earlier. It's a janyam of Neetimathi (60th Melakartha raga). The omission of 'Dha3' is said to be a recent trend. Looks like IR has deployed the 'original' HamsanAdham in most songs :)
Here's an excerpt from R.S. Lakshmi Narayanan's article, where he's discussed 'Thendral Vandhu Ennai Thodum' in detail:
"The beauty of the prathi madhyamam can be well appreciated in ragas like Hamsanadham. There has been quite a good discussion about this ragam for a while in rmic. It will become hackneyed to recapitulate it once again. Just to present the gist of the material: Originally a Neethimathi janyam and hence using Sa Ri2 Ma2 Pa Da3 Ni3 Sa (and the converse as avarohanam), it later became reduced to a pentatonic ragam when singers practically preferred to eschew the usage of shatsruthi daivatham (Da3). Thus, the Hamsanadham that we hear nowadays seem to be a janyam of Kalyani, instead of the 60th melakartha Neethimathi."

More on Hamsanadham and its DHA issue:
http://forumhub.com/indcmusic/7769.10.05.59.html
...From RMIC...
Hamsanadham
There is some conjecture whether Shatsruthi Dha occurs in this ragam or not. It is a janya ragam of mele 60, Nithimati. It is one of those janya ragams that is more popular than its parent.
I have seen the arohana/avarohana as
S R2 M2 P D3 N3 S / S N3 D3 N3 P M2 R2 S
This makes it a vivadi raga.
The Net raga list (http://www-bsac.eecs.berkeley.edu/~ksanthan/ragalist.txt)
lists it as:
|60| S R2 M2 P N3 S | S N3 P M2 R2 S
In this case, if D3 occurs, it can be considered to be just a gamaka
from N3!
This raga has become popular because of Thyagaraja's
Bantureethi Kolu in this ragam. I am not sure if the
Dha occurs in this piece. Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar's
recording of this krithi was probably one of the first.
Chitti Babu's recording of this was probably one of the first
Carnatic music pieces I was exposed to!
I don't think there are compositions by Dikshitar or Shyama
Sastri in this ragam.
I am also aware of two GNB compositions:
1. Dasashatadala
2. Bharama Ee baluni brova
I have been taught the latter without the Dha but the notation
in the GNB book shows that it does occur. Sanjay Subramahmanyan
makes the point that many of the compositions in the GNB book
have been completed (or at least notated) by S. Kalyanaraman, who
was a proponent of the use of D3 in Hamsanadham.
The Dha occurs at the end of the chitta swaram for Dasashatadala and creates
a very nice effect. (NS'NDN) Again, it is unclear if the chitta
swaram is GNB's own or has been added by Kalyanaraman or someone else.
Madhyamakala kalpana swaras also sound good in this ragam.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
from Sangeetham.com (sangeetham talk old format)
The arohana/avarohana of hamsanadam are:
s-r2-m2-p-d3-n3-s s-n3-d3-n3-p-m2-r2-s
and is a janyam of the 60th mela, Nithimathi.
However, the vivadi swaram, d3 is generally avoided while rendering this ragam. A good discussion on this is available in Sangeetha Kalanidhi T. V. Subba Rao's book `Studies in Indian Music' in the chapter on the `Vachamagochara and Banturithi'.
Another ragam where the vivadi swara is generally avoided is Amrithavarshini
