Pongal Special Light Music Program by Thillana.
That was a great performance by Swamiji. The orchestration of all the songs were perfect which is very difficult to find in any other light music shows. All the singers (including kids) did a good job too.
Congrats Kishmu! keep up the good work.. you have a very bright future :)

Mr. Rags has a good voice. My vote goes to Anthi mazai, it was played well.
Overall a great show, keep it up.

Great Show! The orchestration was especially excellent with lot of attention given even to minute details. Sometimes the sound (feedback) was a problem, which I'm sure was a pain in the rear for the singers. Keep it coming!

who is swamiji? alex? i've already become a fan of the singing style ( mannerisms??) of alex. the show would have been better , with a higher volume. the vocals were not heard loudly. i was eager to hear 'uppu karuvAdu' by raghavan.
Good entertainment guys.

Thank you very much for listening to the show. The mixing was very poor, as we didnt spend enough time on setting the monitors and stuff. Despite that we managed to do our best. I am really glad everyone liked it!!
Triton Rules!!!
The whole team is very talented, and I am so happy to have worked with them (and will do in the future)

Your reproduction of andhi mazai is amazing. preludes/singing ..ellame romba nalla irundhadhu. I just wished that u had not tried yamunai aatrile. A colossal disrespect to a classic :(

The prelude idea was thillanas own style, and I was amazed they had it in just like in the movie. Yamunai aatrile was sung by an american...a good effort although it had lots of western touches...

almost ella paattum kEtten (listening now to iLamai idho). The presentation of the first interlude of valaiyosai was awesome. ilamai idho idho is an extremely tough song in every aspect. innum konjam siramam eduththirukkalaam. thaniye thannanthaiye virkum sirithu gavanam seluththi irukkalaam. that is one song which stands out from the rest of your presentation. If I remember, u hinted once that you were probably going to try raakkamma kaiyai thattu. did you try ?
My over all opinion is that the instrument players have put a great effort. The lady vocalists, especially in chorus requiring songs, probably need a bit more of a practice. The male lead voice in the songs was really good.
wish I get a chance to see you guys working together :-) Minute details ellam note panni irukkeegna. Hats off !

When I try to open thillana.asx file, WMP simply throws an error saying format is not valid. Any idea what causes the error? I have WMP running on Windows 2000.

It was a good show. I did not have high expectations, but was pleasantly surprised.
The prelude bit to andhi mazhai came as a
very nice surprise. Some of the interludes
were reproduced very close to the original.
The keyboard players definitely deserve a special mention.
One thing that stands out is, of the contemporary
MDs, thillAnA played only songs of IR and ARR!:-)
Deva fans may have been disappointed :-)

How is this thread related to this forum?
I appreciate you guys appreciating a music programme/group but why dont you form your own mailgroup or send personal mails to each other.
A forum should have topics where everyone can participate and i dont think we can do that here.
Admin used to stop such threads before but i dont see them doing anything nowdays.

RV:
One way of appreciating the great classics is to try playing them. Swamiji and troupe had indeed put a great effort to reproduce them and have shared the way they have appreciated it. A good wod of encouragement coupled with some constructive criticizm will help them go a long way. This forum is essentially for "appreciating" tfm and hence I dont find this an off-the-domain topic.
Swamiji:
I forgot to add this. If "yamunai aatrile" had been sung by an american, I take back by comments.

I just happened to catch a few songs on thendral.com. Very good effort. I can believe this one is real live sound instead of some karaoke CD+vocals :).
Looks like you guys tried songs with difficult choral singing etc. The strings and brass (thamizha thamizhA) sounds seem good (Triton ?).
sorgamE enrAlum ..I thought the singing was almost one octave lower than the actual song..but I could be wrong.
Swamiji, I trust your sound engineering skills but here is my suggestion on this feedback thingy - rent some real live performance microphones. (Is it costly to do so ?). These microphones are picking up sound from all over.

I guess there were lots of acoustic pickups (fromm veena and violin) that was the real cause. Any fundaes on sound mixing?

MS my wife is an excellent singer, but mostly a bathroom singer. Everyone in our family loves her singing and likes her voice. But I will not start a thread on my wife singing and ask my family spread throughout the world to participate in that thread(with constructive criticisms and heavy dose of encouragement). We will rather wish her directly or through telephone or emails.
Not in a public forum like this which if i did would be a cheap publicity.
anyway I know my postings are all 'seveetan kathil uthiya sangu'..continue your postings.
If the admin allows it who am i to oppose?

Sure..you have acoustic instruments that need to be miked ..but they should be live performance microphones (cardiod type). They have a hemi-spherical pick pattern, so the microphone should be placed 180degrees off the place of speakers.
Microphones for specific instruments are intended for studio use only. (Visit the shure website. These are the kind of microphones that are easily available for rent).
Re: mixing. Do you guys use a SPL meter at all ? Try each instrument (note C for eg), change the gain on the input to the desired SPL level. Then you are all set. But not as easy as it sounds.
Maybe I can volunteer some time next time around. I am here in BayArea.

RV :-) I agree I don't have much to counter. But as haris says it is not deafening like the din created by the worship of IR or ARR. So I guess admins did not mind..
