Iruvar is a very good example of ARRs creativity.
"Aayiratthil Naan Oruvan" sounds like an MGR song and "Narumugaiye" sounds like an old TFM song. Also the menacing BGM for that Prakash Rajs empty verses was very good.
As another facet, the unusual voices he has brought to TFM - Shahul Hameed, Suresh Peters, Subah, himself is terrific.

Hardly few people would have heard or appreciated the song "ENNAATHTHA PONNATHTHA ENNAITHTHAAN VITTUPPONA" from the film "UZHAVAN". The song is one of the best songs I have heard feeling the loss of "AMMA". The song is composed only with male voice with hardly any music. I heard he took about only 3 hrs to compose the entire song.
Also "RAASATHTHI" from Thiruda Thiruda does not have music but one of his big hits.

This is a thread to discuss about ARR's positive aspects. Please do not mention about Suresh Peters etc here and pin point his negatives.

ARR's creativity is omnipresent in almost all of his albums. To start with, ROJA was a hit only on the basis of sweet melodies and ARR's creative use of the synthesizer(unlike rest of the MDs). Furthermore, songs like Kannalane(Bombay), Minnale(May Madham), Uyrium neeye(Pavitra), Hai Rama(Rangeela) are some of the most creative and innovative songs I have heard in film music. I will write in little detail about each of these songs in the days to follow.

Arvind:
Exactly the point. The voices of Suresh Peters etc. are no good - at least in the conventional sense. Bringing out good numbers with those voices is creative. Rambam is not a musical instrument. If a good number can be produced with just rambam, that would be very creative. Of course, I think ARR has gone overboard on these voices.

Hi,
AR -
Our panai soruik our soru patham -
Roja -
"chi na chi na aasai"
He is the person who introduced harmony singing in TFM.. (Western music has good harmonics)
(I mean real harmony)
He is the person who introduced various DRUM kits --- House Kits - Brush kit
House kit is often used in Western Rap ( if any one say Rap or other western music as noise - I am sorry for thier ignorence.)
House Kit= The drum sound in Anajali in duet , Thoda thoda in Indira
He gave definition to instruments..
Sax - he used it very very well in Duet...
Flute : He introduced a new style of flute playing (eg : an interlude in Anjali - duet)
Guitar : In "July ma dam vanthal" - A real flamingo
Harmonium and bongos - Sambo Sambo ---
He has indrouced new sounds and he has forced every one to conentrate on thier sound quality..
Mana Madura mamara kuile --- A beautiful of Blend or jugalbandhe of Tamil folk and Mexican Salsa
(The is the best song of Ar in 1997)
The scale change in the middle of the song...
no has done this in TFM..
to be continued...

Srikkanth: I dont know enough about music to talk about scale change etc. But doesnt scale change occur in "Oru Raja Raniyidam" in Sivanda Mann ? I remember some lines like
"Odam Pon Odam Adhu Unnodum Ennodum Odum
Odattum Odam Enna Ini En Vaazhvum Unnodu Odum"
followed by verses in a faster beat:
".....Pudhu Vidhamaana Sadugudu Vilaiyaattu
Thottadhu Paadhi Pattadhu Paadhi Vidha Vidhamaana Jodigal Vilaiyaattu"
I dont know whether this is a scale change or not but...

HI RV
WHAT YOU REFER IS A a bridge....
MSV HAS DONE THIS , PUT THIS IN CREATIVITY OF MSV.. the beat changes to Waltz...from the regular beat and back
Scale change is changing the Sruthi...
Basically Scale is equalant to Sruthi (ie. we say 1 kattai = C scale , 2 kattai = D scale..
when a song is composed in 1 kattai - if it changes - increases or decreses in sruthi it is called as scale change...
Western music follows this and scale changes in middle of the song is common
This is not allowed in carnatic music - in the middle of a song if you change scale Subudu and the gang will trash the singer and call it Abaswaram.... since our MD's are trained with that ear they dont adapt this much..
IN mana madurai the scale or the sruthi changes perfectly...
Hope you clear now!
Thanks...

Hello Everyone!
I am a 100% fan of ARRahman. Unfortunately, I do not get much of his music here, besides the few Hindi albums that he composes for.
I am in Guyana, South America. Here we speak English. Hindi movies do run in the theatres here. Again no South Indian Movies excepting those that are dubbed into Hindi, like Roja, Bombay, Dal Pati etc come here.
I love all the albums that ARRahman has released. I like his style. He bridges the gap between Western and Eastern Music. He certainly attracts the Western Generation of music listeners. His masterpieces like Roja and Bombay will forever be close to my heart. I have em all in Hindi.
Although I do not speak Hindi or any other South Indian Languages, I love South Indian music. I love the movies too [although I have not seen much].
I also like the South Indian people. I can tell you that they are more like the people in my country. More friendly and hospitable. Besides the climate in South India is very much like the tropical one here.
Um...I guess I am overstepping boundaries with regards to the topic...smile. My apologies. But this is the first site that I came across that had anything on my fave singers and music.
If you guys know of any other sites, I would be extremely grateful if you can send me the URLs.
Hamma! Hamma!

To Shailendra:
There are at least 15 sites dedicated to ARR. I do not know the URLs for all of them, but if you will search for A R Rahman on any search engine, you will get a list, listing these respective sites. Yet, I know two sites that are exceptionally noteworthy. These are:
Satish Subramanian's A R Rahman site &
Neekesh Dharia's A R Rahman site.
I do not know the URLs for these sites, as I said. Nevertheless, if you check this thread again in couple of days, I will most probably have posted them(URLs).

I won't agree that oru paanai sorrukku oru soru
patham,he never introduced new concepts in music.what he did was he collected from the old songs &gave them new polish, like the same old wine in new cup.have u ever heard of this song ennavale!it's started with kedaram, but ended with
someother ragam.which is not at all good.but people liked rehman so they accepted his song.if u hear bombay songs he introduces a new voice in between for eg:nee siritha masthana!!! suddenly in the mid a male voice occurs he screams like anything .is it looking good?

ARR's work in Bombay, especially kanaaleney is noteworthy . It was very well directed by Maniratnam.
Also the song thee..thee thithikkum then from Thiruda Thiruda would outshine most of the music videos.
I also like the song Kaadlukku .. from Kaadalan sung by Udit N and ?. I have not really heard or remember any other song set to an excellent slow reggae beat and this song was welll choreographed.
The music of Duet and Pudhiya Mugam are very good.

Hi
Mr.Shanker,
You say AR songs have screams or similar sound song etc....
it might not sound well because our ears are not used to such chorus interludes. Hear western Rock (or oldies rock:hey jude by beatles),
This is also a kind of music ...
if it does not sound good to you, dont hear it..
but you cannot say it is incorrect...

Quoting Shankar
"have u ever heard of this song ennavale!it's started with kedaram, but ended with someother ragam.which is not at all good.but people liked rehman so they accepted his song."
End Quote.
Why is not "at all good" that it "ended in someother ragam"?
You are insulting "people", when you accuse them of liking the song because they liked Rahman.
I don't think things work like that. If that is the case, all Rahman songs should be hits like "Ennavale" and all IR songs should be hits, because people also like IR.

Hello Guys,
U guys had missed this song from the movie vandi solai chinarasu, 'Ithu sugam sugam sugam, meendum meendum..'The song is so melodious and the way the singer sung the song is great.Even though i heard that song long back but now also i jus feel it is some were being sung around me.
That was one among ARR best song.
There is a lousy song in that movie, 'sen thamiz nattu tamizichi' every body liked it, but sugam sugam is ARR's gem.

I vaguely remember reading an interview with ARR, where ARR discussed his music for pudhiya mugam , which was not initially popular, because it was different and his disappointment with it . I personally rate netru illadha maatram as one of his best.
Does anyone have any additional info about this interview ?

When you hear Halla Gulla from Bombay, in between one of the stanzas, one hears a child's mumbling. This does something to the listener.
May be ARR's tribute to Pink Floyd's - The Wall - the second track has a child crying..
Anyone who has not heard this album, get it along with dark side of the moon and wish you were here . you won't regret it for the rest of you life :- )

I have to listen again to VM to check the exact number but the PF-ish environmental sounds are used in VM. Also in 'porALE ponnuthayi' ARR uses laughing sounds very subtly & beautifully - even though I feel the song was ill-suited to the rustic atmosphere.
To Pratap :
PF is one of all-time great rock bands. Their 'Wish you were here', 'Dark Side of the Moon', 'The Wall' are classics. But like you I have friends who hate PF. 'DSOTM' holds the record for the most number of weeks on number one slot on the Billboard charts.

I have seen in other threads, regarding how `bad' pettai rap is. This song may have a limited life of a few months, it is a trend setter anyways. At least I am not aware or remember any other rap song in tamil before this .
. When I heard it the first time, it was catchy, especially the ending, when a guy yells out 'yeva ava'. One cannot expect to grade how melodious or classy this song is , its purpose was just public popularity. Kaadalan was a hit, mainly for the music and full marks to ARR for introducing rap to tamil film music.
