Why is that we always remember a film tune and words of the song but often not remember where/ when the song appears in the film. (if we saw the film ) Is it the way the brain works ?

The connection to the thread is that do directors really need to have music sense and direct the song so that one can remember the song sequence whenever it is heard ? I personally think very few directors have that talent.

Gk,
That's what I felt when I watched Panivizhum Malarvanam in N.Nithya. I still enjoy the song when we hear it, but would prefer to forget Kartik and GG doing physical exercises in the name of dance. I liked his picturisation of ore naal unnai naan from illamai oonjaladhu. It had a lot of freshness to it and the song was again #1.
I was just wondering if this thread can be used to discuss outstanding picturisation of songs, which never fade from memory ( not the situation for the song - this is being discussed in another thread.)

I would rate 'Andhimazhai pozhigirathu' & 'Nee oru kaadhal sangeedham( nayagan) as alltime greats.

Watch "VAN MEGANGALE VAZHTHTHUNGAL" and look at the picturisation. We can debate whether song was composed after shooting or scenes were shoot after songs were composed.

Svageeswaran:
I don't remember the song sequence. I know its from Pudhiya Vaarpugal. Once I watch it , I'll enter into a `serious discussion' . Bharathi raja used to picturise his songs well. The blending of IR's rustic folk music with Bharatiraja's direction was unique and probably contributed in a big way to his success.
What I initially wanted to discuss in this thead was about the songs which have been picturised badly, even though the songs were great. Not many responses to this thread, probably due to the fact that I saw an archive similar to this topic .

friends,
i dont think anybody deserves more mention than mahendran for the beauty with which he has visualised IR's music. u have innumerable examples for this (nenjathai killathe, nandu, uthiripookal, mullum malarum, johnny, etc. etc.), but to just sample one - "metti oli thaalattum" from metti is an ordinary situation about a mother and her 2 daughters, yet look at the visuals that accompany the interludes and the overall song. i'm interested to find if somebody has observed this recently and has a similar or otherwise comment to make.
countless songs have been picturised trashly on IRs music, the most recent ones that come to my memory are KRs "vanaja girija" that hacked 2 beautiful duets - "unnai vida matten" and "munnam seitha dhavam" - into weird tacky pieces, and that yesteryear great Balu Mahendra's "Raman Abdullah" where he reproduced the same visuals seen in his earlier movies and made the songs look as though his lightboy shot them...any thoughts?

Suresh,
What you mentioned about Mahendran, AshokKumar and IR, as a team is true. In all his movies, importance to visuals and the blending of IR's songs and background music, made it a pleasure to watch. If you saw Pootatha Pootukkal, and remember the song sequence for Aanandham Aanandham nee Thandadhu, the way music starts and the visuals where the water crashes on the rocks. It was great. I dont remember how the song Sandha Kavigal Paadidum from metti was done. Expecting more info from you on this.

Suresh.,
U have exactly reflected my opinion on this subject. Well, I was shocked to see BM's picturisation of Raman Abdullah's songs., the movie was a crap and the way he visualised those great songs was pathetic. en veetu sannal etti . is an amazing number. But it loses all it's beuty in the film due to the bad visuals. As u said, maybe BM lost hope in the movie when he shot the songs.
But who to blame. Songs these days seem to rely on
technology rather than artistic sense. hero's face turning into a horse or Lion in a duet
seems to be hit these days. I don't understand why director Shankar forgot abt pig when he shot Indian songs.

Here is an article on picturization of film songs:
http://www.indolink.com/tamil/cinema/Memories/98/articles/songpic.htm
It would be nice if the TFM-DF participants write,
as and when their time permits, the song-picturizations
they really liked, describing in detail the
picturization and the reasons
for their liking it. If such postings have been made
elsewhere in other threads, it would be nice to
cut-and-paste a copy here. Even if a song and its picturization
are well-known, it is still worth describing in
detail here because there may be many who may not have
known much about it.
To TFM Group:
Don't you think this thread ought to go to the
Permanent Group?

MSK,
I really don't agree that BM's recent movie "Raman Abdullah" songs were badly picturised. I atleast liked the picturisation of the song "Muthamizhe..".
The heroine had done a great job in that song. Probably the technical aspect of the song and the movie as a whole was a crap, but otherways it was decent.
Whenever I hear this song , the picture of the heroine looking at the hero with love-thirsty eyes flashes before me.
Probably ,one's liking of picturisation has to do with one's personal preferences .
But I certainly agree that the camera-work and lighting effects was a total crap.
One of the best picturisations i have ever seen is from the movie "Devadai" "oru naal antha oru naal", Nasser really has some stuff. If you can remember the song, the dance steps were decent and the best part of it the flash-back sequence of the song was re-enacted on a smaller scale in the song(sort of dance-drama)-I
liked this idea very much-very novel indeed...any comments

I liked the way Chinna Chinna Vanna Kuyil.. was picturised by MR-PCSriram team in MounaRagam. The lighting, the mesmersing music, the thullal in Revathi's dance etc.. are seen to be beleived.. I read in one of the threads that persons have seen the film repeatedly just for this song.. Yes the song picturisation definitely is a key to success of the film.. In recent times one of the best songs to be picturised is Manamadurai.. (our TFM-DF award goes to this song) from MinsaraKanavu..The colourful costumes, song full of pep, foot-tapping/rhythmic choreography and the fun-filled scheme of things in the song makes it a wonderful experience.. The song is not erased from memory for a long time..
