Private albums and music videos are the best way for an upcoming music director or a singer in any music industry, be it Tamil, Telugu or Hindi. Even an established singer or a music director can choose to do an album from drowing into just film music. A R Rahman did Vande Maatharam and many more albums. Sreenivas did Ussele Ussele, Malgudi Subha did Paarai, Anuradha Sriram did, Chennai Gal, Pop Shalini, SPB Charan and Devan have also done private albums. Music director D Immaan did Style Style thaan, and Shamma, with singers like Mano and Pop Shalini. And many more singers and music directors have done quite a few amount of non-film works in TFM.
But, comparing to the amount of music videos and pop singers, non-film works in Mumbai, we so not have many such works in TFM and south india? What could be the reason? Is this a healthy sign? Should we encourage pop album in TFM, won't it be more of a creative freedom for musical artists?

1.I think we are more attracted to cinema than any other state in North .Have u ever seen an "sharukh Khan Narpani Mandram" or " AAmir Khan Narpani Mandram"???ALso the way the actors are fooling the people in our state .I think a song becomes a hit in TN only if it is associated with cinema ...
2.Secondly in NORTH people respect old songs than how we do ..I have seen old romantic numbers being played in parties in NORTH but never in TN !!!So when they remix the older versions to give a POP ALbum ,it makes good business.
3.Thirdly HINDI POP are a a hit because of the fact that they are very glamorous .....U observe any recently hit HINDI POP ( kanta la etc) ,they will have ladies half dressed ...This is a negative point as far as HINDI POP is considered .
4.People here welcome changes and talent than in TN ( am i right ???) ...whereas in TN it is not so ......So that might may be the reason why people welcome that ...
BUT with whatever little expereince i have got ,i have never seen people appreciating background score of a movie except in Tamil NAdu .I once remember when Title card were shown for RAMANA ,there were good applauses !!!

Mumbai Ramki, its not that people in TN dont welcome change, they are just mature enough to see through fads and not give in to them.
The response has been more than ok for the number of new MDs in our films. It all depends on how good the new venture/artist is.
Private albums made in the north are basically half-baked productions. The all-gals crew Viva could have got such mileage only on Channel [V].
TN accepts private artists only if they are genuinely good. Look at the Music season concerts which run from Nov end to nearly Jan end in Madras. There are whole lot of artists out there who are happy with their type of career. Sanjay Subramaniam for one, said he didnt find singing in cinema tempting. Will you ever get such a scale of classical culture in NI?
its about the culture. If Salman had carried out his monkey-business(what else is he capable of?) in SI, he would've been stoned to death promptly.

Jay, good thread!
Given examples above, that kinda songs better dont come. There are my private albums gets a good accolades in TN. Depends on what you call a PA(!)
a) Many of pushpavanam kuppusamy nattupadals are famous
b) Bharathy (BJ - Simply great)
FYI, Pullanguzhal kodutha moongilgale is a Private album song whose reach is much more than film songs. Is it by MSV?
How to group the following
1) Many Iyyapa season albums (atleast one or two songs go better thans UU)
b) Carnatic & Gazal/Western fusions

Its a good thing that private albums 'like' the ones in North dont crop up in Tamil...most of the Hindi private/pop albums are astonishingly stupid and dumb. How many pop artists can you remember after 2 years? The onyl thing they get is good mileage because the labels that back them pump in money considering the fact they may do good business in all the Hindi-speaking states, which is much more than, say Tamil-speaking.
A few pop albums are good, no doubt - for example Shankar Mahadevan's Breathless, Sandesh Shandilya's Piya Basanti etc. But these are far and few!

Also, the kind of carnatic albums released by people like Soumya, Nityashree etc should be considered as private album equivalent of the North, though there's just no comparison in terms of quality. The pop scene in the North is extremely frivolous and I can assert that there's no genuine music in that except a very very few good artists.

First and fore most! How many people buy a private album in Tamil?, Answer is very very very few. For a movie producer, costs are covered by other aspects of the movie, they at least break even-in the audio production cost. But Private music producers find it very hard to stay foot. Apart from sales , MP3 takes a chunk which cannot be avoided. So most producers openly discourage a private album in tamil.
However still we see few private album out there this because of People like Dr.Srinithi Chidambaram (Rangarajan) etc, encourages few small timers and gives them an opening or at least a try.
However bottom line is People must come forward to buy it.And keeping the quality aspect aside, people from North buy more private album than South, this is the reason we see more private albums in Hindi.
We have great talent etc no doubt it. however
in South (Tamil espeically) people needs a movie star to "dance" in order to hear music. That is the ground rule. Movie and Music are tied together, a divorce between these entities will open up more private album.
Until then it will be a worth less discussion like getting water to madras.

Vasundara Das and Mahalakshmi have also donr Private albums which will be releasing soon in the market. The Mahalakshmi album will have lyrics by Pa Vijay and Vasundara's album will have Vairamuthu's lyrics. Music by two new Bangaloreans.
'Moongil Nila': An Album in Tamil
Music director N. Neeru who composed music for Tamil albums like 'Oru Parvai' and 'Alayin Karangal' is yet pioneering another album in Tamil, 'Moongil Nila', depicting his passion for Tamil music. He is a Sri Lanka based Tamilian who is living in France and learned music in the Music Academy there (S.A.E in Parris). He is also credited with many awards. He is successful in composing music for the advertisements in local channels in France. Pavanna, who too is a Sri Lanka based Tamilian living in France, interested in poetry, produces this album. His contribution to poetry is in the form of poems in 'Kadanilul Oru Yagam', 'Kallaraikkul Oru Karuvalai', in the songs of the Tamil album 'Kanavugal' and effectively composed music and produced for a Tamil album 'Kadhal Vali'.

Hey Guys,
I was running a radio exclusively for Tamil Private Albums music by the name "Radio One - Tamil Pop", but discontinued after 3 months for lack of support.
I have a good collection of Tamil pop - published and unpublished (singers & composers from India, US, France et cetera).
If guys are interested and assure me of good listenership (nothing financial absolutely), I can think of restarting it.
What say?
Bobby

I think poor marketing is one of the reason for Tamil Pop/Private albums not being popular.
One Question - are remix albums included in this category?
