  if in the name of propagating tamil, you were willing to put up with "vaadi en kappakizhange" or "o lanka.. koppara thenga" , or any of the SJ's mukkal, munagal songs, god save tamil from self-appointed guardians like you! when IR had Lata, Asha, and Usha Uthup sing much before ARR even started making jingles, where were you tamil - jingoists hiding? For someone who's got a deeper insight into the tamil language than any other MD, IRs choice of lyrics is sometimes shocking, and reflects a certain nonchalance toward the role of a lyricist in the scheme of film music.
  
  You can accuse ARR of stretching things farther for bringing in the horrible Udit, Sukhvinder and the like, but isn't this a trend everyone else of the younger generation (yes, KR and YSR incuded) is emulating? Similarly, you can trash VM for all his attempts at tanglish, but qualitatively, has anyone else even come near him in the past decade(s) in consistently giving creative, easy-on the-ear tamil lyrics in those few unadulterated songs of his?
  
  IMO, the % of good tamil lyrics is indeed higher with the ARR-VM combo than anyone in the contemporary generation. Why, even IR, uses pop nonsense, recent example his 'rukku rukku' in friends. It's only a symptom of a deeper malaise, that of the audience leaning towards all things western. Despite all this, didn't IR's Bharati, and ARRs Iruvar find good support? You can't generalise things here; just as 'Shakalakka' was a hit, so did a 'Nirpadhuve' or 'Narumugaiye'..
  
  Extreme ends of the scale, but that's what market segmentation all about. ARR understands this well, and product packaging even more, addressing niche listener segments carefully. If IR can't do it, let's not blame him, for he comes from a diff. era. Likewise, let's also not grudge others, esp. ARRs, hard-earned, and deserved success.

  My dad echoed this when I told him about the vehement arguements about "tamil kollai" expressed here in the forums...he laughed and said when the instruments themseleves are not tamil, why do we expect the tune or the lyrics to be the same !

  but,
  
  if the instruments are not thamizh and if they are used in a thamizh songs and their limitation(or whatever it is) don't kill the thamizh music then no problem in using the western instruments.
  
  this happened in the case of Violin (ofcourse modified), mandolin, sax, guitar etc in Carnatic music. a john higgins who didn't kill the Carnatic as well as the Bhavam in the krishna nee baeganae bhaaro is most welcome in Carnatic music. But a MJ who is not trained in Carnatic tries his cards in krishna nee baeganae bhaaro and eventually kills it is most UN-welcome. Same goes with all other thamizh music forms.
  
  if we didn't welcome the likes of John Higgins then it is closed mindedness. But if we welcome a MJ just because we claim to be open then it is suicidal. here i assumed that MJ is not trained in carnatic and at this juncture if he attempts will spoil this music.
