I BELIEVE MOST OF THE SONGS IN TFM IS SET TO ADHI TALA OR A VERSION OF IT. I WOULD LIKE TO GET A LIST OF TFM SONGS IN RUPAKA TALA.
THANKS

To Mr. Swami
Even though rupaka tala is technically a 6 beat cycle in practice it is applied as a cycle of 3 beats. Adhi tala has a cycle of 8 beats.
One prominent example for Rupaka tala is Bhavayami Raghu Ramam.
To Mr. Murali Shankar,
Thanks for giving the Guna song example. If you are referring to paruvame in Nenjathai Killathe, I believe it is a form of ada thala which eventually boils down to adhi thala. I would appreciate a clarification of this .
To Mr. Sriram,
Thanks for the example of Agaya Vennilave in Arangetra Velai. The knowledge of Ilayaraja never siezes to amaze me.

Have you marvelled at the beats of the song 'Vanamellam Shenbagappoo, Vanellam Kunkumappoo' sung with gusto by SPB (I fogot the film, some Paattukkaran?) The beats in the charanam seem to go off the track and round-up beautifully towards the end, just before the pallavi. A similar feeling one gets in the song 'Aagaya Vennilave' too. Can anyone tell me more about this technique and the Tala of the former?
Many thanks
Neels

Dear Karthi,
The confusion is probably because the Rupaka taala is very fast in the "paruvamae". It is actually an accelerated Waltz beat. The confusion comes because of 3 x 4 = 4 x 3 = 12. I basically feel that the beat though is rupaka the song fits in such a way that it takes a four cycle based timing.
Regards
Murali Sankar

The complementary to Rupakam in Hindustani is Dadra (and sometimes in double speed Ektaal). I think there are quite a few songs in Dadra in TFM. Here's a list:
Chinna Chinna Thooral Enna
Aracha Sandhanam
...something something.. Jannal vacha Jacket Podavaa
Marudha Marikkozhindhu Vaasam
Maniye ManikkuilEy
Naan Paadum Mowna Raagam kEtkavillaiyaa
Kulichchaa Kuththaalam
I can go on and on.
Not too many in Misra Chaapu (7 beat cycle). Azhagu Nilavey by ARR comes to mind

I think Aagaya Vennilaavae... sung by KJY and Uma is set to Misrachaapu

1) Poomalai Vangivanthan from Sindhu Bairavi

A correction ..Anandha raagam ketkum is in paneer pushpangal and not in anandha raagam..
Though i have a decent feel for the thaala..
I really do not the finer details of thaala as such..
I know thaala is made of aksharas..what characterises these aksharas??this always puzzles me..

This question doesn't belong in this thread, but could someone please answer it anyway since I am not able to get answers anywhere else :(
Why am I not able to listen to any songs from swara.com? Is that site still functioning. Thanks.

Wonderful thread ,keep it going.
BTW the song Agaya Vennilave is very interesting
because the rthym goes in 2 cycles
it goes Rupakam/or Thisram thriputa thalam
for the main song.
And goes chasthuvaram for the orchestration
Correct me if I am wrong.
Mr.Ilayaraja has used lots of rthymatic cycle apart from the usual 8beat cycle.
Taal Misram for Gangaikari Mannadi
Tall Kanda Chapu for 'Azhagu Malar Ada'
I will also try to come with our other legendary MDs like KVM and MSV
keep it going

A nice Rubaka thaala song>>
Anantha THen katru thaalatuthe.. one of Malasiya's Best song
How come you guys missed one of the latest? May be someone pointed out but
"Munpaniya" in Nandhaa is Rubaha!

Chandrasekaran :
AgAya veNNilAvE is indeed rUpaka thALam. The song is paced so wonderfully that it takes a while to get the thALam. But once you have it, it is beautifully kept up.
IMO, azhagu malarAda is in Adi thALam thishra nadai.

Does rupak talam include meters like 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 or is it just 3/4?
Whatever @ 206, Agaya Vennilave fits without effort into the 4/4 meter. Listen to the bass guitar for the accents. For me both 3/4 or 6/8 seem forced. But one song that confuses me is Manmatha masam from Parthale Paravasam.
One interesting thing abt Minnale song from May madham. In the second interlude, after the first 6 bars, the violins start playing triplet notes. If u follow the violins, u cud notate in 6/8, but if u follow the drum it wud be the usual 4/4. But I think that 4/4 wud be best way to notate there, cos u cud notate the violins melody in tripets then. Am I right?
Did u guys listen to "Priyatama nannu Palakarinchu pranayama" from the telugu movie "Jagadeka veerudu Atiloka sundari"?
http://raaga.com/channels/telugu/moviedetail.asp?mid=A0000136
Song is in 6/8 cycle, but the beginning two lines of the Charanams go to 12/8 and come back to 6/8 again. Another beautiful song with very good tabla in 6/8 is Anbay from Rhythm.

Doubts :
I listened to the song again. I cannot make the pallavi fit to Adi thALam. I am quite convinced that it is rUpaka thALam. But the charanam is a different matter altogether. It can fit to either rUpakam or Adi (the interludes seem to be Adi all the way).

Whatever @206, the timing from tabla is same thru out the song, pallavi, interludes, and charanams. And bass guitar timing is the same in the charanma and pallavi. Then if u feel the interludes are in 4/4, so are the pallavi and charanams. Listen to the bass guitar when they sing the pallavi.
