Top 5 albums of IR in the 90s

Here are my picks for the five best albums that IR has composed for the 90s.

1)Gopura Vasalile - (*ing Karthik, Bhanupriya - director: Priyadarshan). Best album of IR, in my opinion, of the 90s. "Kaathal Kavithaigal" is the one of the best love duets that I have ever heard. Sung brilliantly by S.P. Bala and S. Janaki, this is the best song of the movie. "Nadhum ezhunthadadi" is another wonderful classical number. Infact, all the songs were just classic in their own right. Beautifully picturised by Priyadarshan and P.C. Sriram as well(especially "Kathal Kavithaigal"). The movie itself is outstanding. Look out for the beautiful BGM at the railway scene in the beginning.

2)Idhayam - (*ing Murali - director: Kathir) just under "Gopura Vasalile" but still an excellent piece of work. IR's BGM is where Idhayam really excels in. "Pottu Vaitha" sung masterfully by Yesudas is my pick.

3)Nadodi Thendral - (*ing Karthik, Ranjitha - director: Bharathiraja). IR's last score for Bharathiraja - and what a score it was. Songs are mesmerizing ("Maniye Manikuyile" is my pick for the best song)and BGM is absolutely terrific.

4)Dalapathi - (*ing Rajini, Mammooty - director: Mani Ratnam). IR's last score for Mani Ratnam - ditto. "Sundhari, Kannil Oru Seithi..." is my pick. BGM is also great.

5)Avatharam - (*ing Nasser - director: Nasser). Great, overlooked score. BGM is wonderful and the song "Thendral Vanthu Theendum.." is the one of the greatest songs that IR has ever composed.

  My list will have Devar Magan in it. IR's work in Devar Magan is nothing short of amazing. My fav in that is "pORRip paadadi ponnE".

  Don't bad-mouth my list raja rasikan. This is the way I feel. This is not your opinion, it's mine. "Devar Magan" is a classic film but I'm strictly looking at the soundtrack, and when it comes to that, it is just a good sountrack - nothing like the top five I mentioned. "Keladi Kanmani", on the other hand, is a worthy great soundtrack that I just missed out on putting on my top five.

  Yeah, Mahanadhi is also very good Vel, but I liked Idhayam much better. Idhayam had a vastly better BGM than Mahanadhi IMO.

  Alright, here we go (in random order):
  
  1. Marupadiyam (top pick: Nallathor Veenai Seithi)
  2. Aranmanai Kili (top pick: Vaanmathiye)
  3. Rajakumaran (top pick: Sithigathi Pookkale)
  4. Kizhakku Vaasal (top pick: Vandhathe Oho Kungumam)
  5. Aathma (top pick: Innarul Tharum Anna Poorani)
  6. Aavarampoo (top pick: Adukku Malli Eduthu Vanthaan)
  7. Pudhiya Raagam (just the song Malligai Maalai Katti is reason enough to make the list)
  8. Raman Abdullah (top pick: En Veettu Chennal Ettu [one of the best songs in raaga Hindolam IMO]
  9. Ellaame En Raasaathaan (Veenaikku Veenai-- haunting song, supposedly in raagam Hamsanadham)
  10. Ezhumalaiyin Mahimai (who can beat these classical tunes? Is this dubbed from the Telugu Sri Edukondala Swami, btw?)

  As you can see, from my list, the biggest commercial hits are not the best to everybody. I know there are many of you DFers who will find beef with some of my entries, especially nos. 7 and 9!
  
  That's another thing; as k pointed out in another thread, it's remarkable how different our personal tastes are. For example, I think that the best song from Nadodi Thendral is 'Oru Kanam Oru Yugamaaga', adn the best from Dalapathi is 'Putham Puthu Poo Poottathu'. :-)

  If you read my post I said your list is illegitimate in "MY" opinion. If you have right to your own opinion don't I have the right to not agree with it?
  
  I never bad-mouthed you in anyway. Just expressed strong resentment to appreciate your list since "MY" fav devar magan is not included. If you feel that way its your wish I will respect it but will not agree with it.

  If u consider non tamil film albums ,
  "Guru" Malayalam, and " Nammora Mandara Hoove" from Kannada will be in the top three albums in my openion from ninetees, of course "Devar Magan" and "Nadodi Thenral" were probably commercially successful album ( audio sales wise), IMHO

  Nammora Mandara Hoove, Amrutha Varshini and Galate Aliyandru had brilliant scores and had good songs. In which the last album have songs like western songs(Remake of Ullathai allitha) and the rest 2 had melodious songs which still tops the chatrs.

  Amruthavarshini?? Never heard of it! I know it's the name of a melody scale, but I never knew there was a film with this title. Galate Aliyandru? What is this? Is the music by IR for both these films?

  I looked up both 'Amruthavarshini' and 'GAlate Aliyandru' at musicindiaonline, in the Kannada section. It says that, for the latter movie, the Music is by DEVA. I know not who did the former movie; it doesn't say.
