how some of arr's interludes in many of his romantic songs are sooo haunting...
eg. song from may maadham, minnale - from 3mins 25secs onwards.
first interlude in kadhal rojave...
both interludes from thendrale in kadhal desam
mesmerising saxo interludes in en kadhale in duet...
both interludes from pudhu vellai mazhai...
first in hariharan's version of nila kagiradhu
and more recently, the first interlude in the longer version of azhage sugama.
...or is it just me getting lost in dream world? ;)

yes they r very haunting indeed. If not haunting they r amazing to listen to even jus on their own as individual pieces. I'm even guilty of having ripped ARR's interludes on their own to make a compilation. Another sinful practice of mine is to split the track when ripping and then merge again when burning wit the interludes repeated several times over, for sustained listening pleasure. :-))
You are not lost, I've felt the same always, tho I did get stoned once for mentioning it here.

Why? What's wrong in mentioning it here?
As for merging the interludes, i was thinking of doing the same thing...but never had the patience to go through all the process :-P
Glad to know, though, that i aint the only one!

sometimes when you listen to the interludes in Rehman's songs you beg for more.
I wish if he could include an instrumental or a theme music for his album like he did in some of his previous work (ie: Bombay theme, Ratsakan theme, Muthu Theme (there is the theme that was on the soundtrack with the violin, but also the theme that had the chrous humming that comes during the starting credits, which is also played during the flashback sequence).
haunting interludes of Rehman for me are:
sakhiye nee than thuniaye (amazing flute work)
Porale Ponnuthaye (the string section)
Enthan uyiril (ochestral ensamble)
uyire uyire
and so many more, I could just write on forever
The thing for me is that everytime I listen to the interlude, I find something new, o matter how ofte hear it, there is always a alitle pleasant suprise waiting to be discovered.

Two of my fave interludes by Rahman,
1. 1st interlude in Roja roja (Kadhalar d..), has different moods thru out, and in the middle when the flute takes over the synth, it creates an impression of another tonic note temporarily.
2. Second interlude in Ooh la la (Minsara K...), effectively bridges two different scales.

First interlude of Snegithane. Gives the song
amazing north indian classical feel.
2nd interlude of thee thee.. Makes me feel like I'm standing on my toes.

Talking abt interludes, what abt intro's ??...I always thought that real good intro's kinda determine the fate of the song :) (IMHO)..My favorite intro of all times is Veerapandi Kotayile...the humming (Chitra and Anupama?)is mind blowing ..Interestingly this song also has one my faorite interludes ..excellent orchestration...comments anybody?

Exactly, the same feeling I used to get many times I hear ARR. That makes me come to him very often.
Just take this example, in "Chinna Chinna Aasai" song, there is a veena piece. It comes after the first stanza. It almost surprises you and you don't hear that after that in the whole song.
Similarly, in "dil se re " song there is a hard instrument beat (I am a music illitrate). It continues for long before first stanza but, before seond stanza it ends abruptly.
In many of the ARR's song the interludes end abruptly making U situp and think more about the songs. I think it is one of his techniques to pull one's concentration.

and Manmadha maasam was 1 of the most creative pieces i've ever heard!!
At first, i thought "Wat's this guy tryin to do?"
when i heard it for the next few times, the genius in the song began to sink in.. and it ends so abruptly making u yearn for it to complete.(took the last line from somewhere :) but it's soooo true!!)..

Abit of digression.
Adding to interludes, another speciality in some ARR songs, I find, is the way somewhere along the song, sometimes at the beginning, or during the interludes, or towards the end of the song, the singer talks/recites/chants. Sometimes, he gets a male singer(s) to chant in the bg in a female solo or vice-versa. It has a magical effect.
Some examples..
1. Hello Mr Ethirkatchi from Iruvar 2:47 to 3:10. It goes like "mannai vergal pirinthaalum vinnai neelam pirindhaalum...." (female recital)
2. Theendai Theendai from En Swasa Katre
-0:06 to 0:24 (female reciting) "kanrum unaathu..."
-1:46 to 2:20 (male chanting in the background..throughout 1st interlude)
-6:18 to end of song (female recital)
3. Enna Solla Pogirai from Kandukonden Kandukonden. The first 22 seconds.
4. Enge Enathu Kavithai from Kandukonden Kandukonden 2:29 to 2:49
This is male recital (Sreenivas?) in a female solo. It goes like "virai vandhavudan nilaa vandhavudan"
Can anyone think of other examples? I'll try to add more later.
