I saw a movie on TV the other day called Bhagavathipuram Railway Gate - *ing Karthik and Rajalakshmi. The movie itself was above average but what really had me in awe was the music by Ilayaraja. How does this man do it? The songs in the film has to rank as one of Ilayaraja's most underrated songs. "Thendral Kaatrum", sung by Sasirekha (I think), is a beautiful track all the better with her beautiful voice. "Samba puthu Samba" is the only average track here. "Aasai Nenjil", sung by S.P.Bala is one hell of a song. It had me in tears. One of S.P.'s overlooked songs. Amazing vocals by S.P. as well as instruments used by Raja. The song is even picturised wonderfully by the director of this movie. Finally, the best song in the movie is "Kaalai Nera Kaatrey Vaazhtu Chellu". The song totally blew me away. In my sincere opinion, if I had to pick ten underrated songs of IR of all-time, this song would rank number one in that list. Deepan Chakaravarthi (I love his voice) and S.P. Shailaja are absolutely wonderful in this brilliant IR composition. Also, picturised wonderfully. All in all, this is one soundtrack that all of you must hear. Have any of you guys had the pleasure of listening to these songs? I like to get your feedback on this.

Rajiv, you're right. Bagavathipuram Railwaygate(1983) had some amazing songs. Sashirekha's solo 'Thendral kaatrum anbu paattum mangai vaazhvil ethu' is a haunting pathos filled number (Lyrics: Muthulingam), and will easily find place among her best efforts, on par with her Vaazhve mayama or Melam kotta neram varum. 'Aasai nenjil' is too good. DC and SPS are wonderful in 'Kaalai nera kaatre vaazhthi chellu, maalai soodum naalai paarthuchollu'( This song used to be featured regularly on Ilangai vanoli's Pongum Poombunal in the morning). One more memorable song is 'Sevvarali thottathile unnai ninaichu' by Illayraja, Uma Ramanan and Saibaba.
In short, a wonderful set of songs by IR, sadly forgotten today, buried unwept in the sands of time--

Rajiv, this is not just one album. so many albums I happen to discover too. you get exhausted at the many overshadowed albums. mainly because of the deluge of recordings by IR! Movies like Valibame Vaa Vaa, Anbe Odi Vaa, Mugathil Mugam Parkalam, Veettile Raaman.... etc.. Deepan chakravarth and his brother i thin TL Maharajan got some wonderful songs from IR. Songs of TLM in Indru Poi Nalai Vaa are memorable! DC actually could not take high notes and marred songs like Pani Mazhai Vizhum, O Nenjame with his flat pitches.

If you dig in deep you will find 90% of IR tunes are MSV's tune. Don't say IR was deaf from late 1950s to early 1970s. If at all there was any tamil song he had to listen to, that was MSV's music during that period. He must have grown up listening to Tamil Songs. MSV had great influence on IR which he publicly refused to agree. Now he should agree that MSV was a great influence as he is out of the field. Half credit go to MSV. Half credit go to tabla. As MSV gave a wide range of tunes which if you mix and match you will come out with wonderful tunes. Ask IR if he ever come out with a tune with just tabla. He will suddenly look like a lost child. Only people who do not know the difference between illusion and reality will call IR a MD.

Sorry if there was any misunderstanding. I have nothing against Vj.
Anyone reading this forum would know that Uthaman is a hard core and there is no way he will talk like that of IR.
Instead that was a spoof of his EXACT words used against ARR. That posting served two purposes:-
one is that Uthaman should realise the hurt he is causing the fans of ARR when he makes these kind of posts and two, what it means to make a provocative posting in a thread that is going on peacefully.
Let us hope that things settle down and Uthaman learns his lesson.

Dude!! Is ARR feeding you? why the hell you get hurt if i criticize ARR? Why don't you prove he is a better musician? Why are you getting after me? I have great respect for both IR and MSV. I have already told about that in some other thread.

Forgot to mention about IR's BGM in Bhagavathipuram Railway Gate. It is outstanding(especially during Karthik and Rajalakshmi's romantic scenes) - and also ranks as one of IR's most underrated pieces.

"Aasai nenjil" is definitely one of S.P.B's best song in pathos. You guys should really listen to fantastic number. A greatly underrated number.
