From time to Time hear about so many cassette being sold?.
How far are these figures true?.
Is there an Organization in India which collects these statistics?.
When they talk about cassette sales are they talking about the number of cassettes released into the market (based on anticipation) or really sales of cassettes?.
When I was in India, most of the villages (tea shops and other public places where songs are played) had copied or duplicated cassettes (not the originals). Does this trend still continue?. If it does how do they come at this figure?.
Note: Please, there is no hidden agenda in the above questions?. All the above are genuine questions that arose in my mind?. Please keep this thread devoid any fan fightings.

I don't think they have accurate pictures of cassette sales in India especially in the mp3 world. But hollywood maintains the record of all the sales.. For each millions you sell you get one platinum.. for example if you have 6 platinums
it means you have sold 6 millions of copies..
ALL TIME BEST SELLING MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS IN HOLLYWOOD..
1)BodyGuard (1993) 17 million
It has got one haunting melody by Whitney houston. 'I will always love you' One the of all time great love ballad..
2)Saturday Night Fever (1978) 15 millions
First time i listened to this album by Beegees way back in 1980 in a small place near trichy.
'staying alive' instantly became an addictive song for me. Such energy and verve.. we hardly understood any english being too young. But we listened to it until the cassette became unusable.
John Travolta, white polyester dress, Bee Gees proved to be a deadly combination.
3)Purple Rain (1984) 13 Millions
This i heard only during my college days. I don't like this guy for his weird looks. When The Doves Cry or some song it was ok.. But other than that it is just an ok soundtrack..
4)Forrest Gump (1994) 12 Millions
It would be enjoyable if you watch it with movie..
5)Dirty Dancing (1987) 11 Millions
Man don't miss this soundtracks if you have not heard already.. It has one excellent number 'Time of my life' .. wow.. great dance number..
6) Titanic (1997) 11 Millions
I don't have to say much about it
7) Lion King (1994) 10 Millions
Most successful animated movie in history of animation. Elton John won the oscar for the song 'Can you feel the love tonight' from this movie.. great song.. must own for disney fans. They clearly have recognition for all types of artists. Rap, hiphop , any type artist..
8) Grease (1978) - 8 Millions
Musical movie for John Travolta and olivia newton john... fun to watch.
9) FootLoose (1984) - 8 Millions
Kevin Bacon had a good break in this movie.. Kenny Rogers gave some great numbers in this.. starting with 'Foot Loose'
10) Waiting to Exhale - 7 Millions
I think this one by whitney houston..
I haven't heard much about this movie. I don't have 3,4 and 10. But i have all the rest..
I guess it is not difficult to keep track of cassette sales if you have one central place to distribute the cassettes... But the interaction between the dealers and distributors should be constant so that distributor can reasonably accurately come out believable statistics. Hope it will become more organized in future..

there was some way to measure when records (discs) were sold in the market. 16 Vayadhiniley was announced as the first platinum (or golden?) disc winner in Tamil. anything after that?

Obviously they wont count priarted cassestes.
Any Audio producer will know how many copies he is making and how well its received. I guess they make batch by batch, seeing public reaction and agents feedback.
But!, know one knows if they are saying the truth or just faking. In US I guess there is proper count, but that too can be faked if needed.

There's an organization IMI (Indian Music Industry) which keeps track of audio sales of their member companies by their Platinum/Gold disc certification. All registered music labels in India are members of IMI.
IMI is also actively involved in anti-piracy operations.
Here's the IMI STANDARDS for Platinum/Gold disc certification :
HINDI FILMS
GOLD - 500,000 units PLATINUM - 10,00,000 units
REGIONAL FILMS
GOLD - 100,000 units PLATINUM - 200,000 units
REGIONAL BASIC
GOLD - 60,000 units PLATINUM - 120,000 units
NATIONAL BASIC
GOLD - 100,000 units PLATINUM - 200,000 units
INTERNATIONAL
GOLD - 20,000 units PLATINUM - 40,000 units
CLASSICAL/SEMI-CLASSICAL
GOLD - 20,000 units PLATINUM - 40,000 units

I think IMI should rework the figures for National sales. The 'film information' figures speak out. Any data on platinums in Tamil ?

any Idea of how these cassette sales figures are arrived at!!.
for e.g. how did they did they know thet 16 vayathiniley sold 120000 (or whatever units)?.
One way od accounting could be this:
They take into the number of cassettes/CD distibuted to local shops and detect the amount of cassettes/Cd's returned (due to Non-Sale). Is this how they do it?

Another interesting aspect which comes to light here is the money involved. taking an average of Rs.200 for a CD and Rs.50 for a cassette, and considering 50% of sales is CDs, then BOMBAY sales works out to cool 1.6 crore rupees. HAHK has done 1.12 crore rupees. Forget about the success of the movie. Producer has made enough money in music sales. I don't think this levels of money and music sales are not there in TFM.

me, i don't think Bombay (tamil) CDs and cassettes sold for more than one crore. It must be the hindi version. the satisfaction is, it was tfm guys like MR and ARR behind this album. same with DilSe too.

Awe,
Purple Rain is a fabulous album. Prince was one of the few pop geniuses in a mediocre 80s decade. Only Saturday Night Fever, and Dirty Dancing (although a compilation of mostly old songs, save for a few new inferior ones) come close to its class. The rest of the albums in the top ten are trifles, regardless of how many they sold.

I know Muthalvan got some Platinum.....but dunno what's the Unit Sold figure.
Now that got to be in TFM alone rite?

Paran, if Muthalvan had gone platinum it must be for tfm alone and must have crossed 200,000 (comb of cassettes and CDs). we don't get the figures and trade industry details.
see the link below which talks about a new telugu movie - Vijayam, going triple platinum even before the movie is released. must be a real big music market in Andhra.

Cassette Sales and CD sales are down due to Piracy. In whole India, you can get pirated Cds and Mp3 Cds from Rs 40 to Rs 60. These pirated Cds are better quality than Audio Cassettes. The latest Hindi Hit Devdas managed to sold only 20 lakhs.
