Singing abilities(?) of our heroes/ actors

A long time ago singing ability was of paramount importance.MKT & PUC days> Then playback came into being & except for occassional foorray heoes have stopped lending their voices to the songs.exceptions are Kamal, Vijay. Of course Sivaji mouthed a couple of lines in a ew films, Karthik had sung a couple, rajini did one in Mannan,prasdanthin Paarthen rasithen. The results were uniformly uneven. Who amongst them is at least tolerable. Also Vaigai Puyal seems to have a good rural voiuce with a gusto for enjoying his lines - especially the old numbers any comments

  My fav is the hero of the film "keladi kanmani"..that fat guy..i think Mr.Raghuvaran(212.2.14.241) knows him well..:-))..dont say that ramesh arvind is the hero..
  Seriously Kamal is a better singer than any of the present day hero's..

  MKT, PUC, TRM, RaajKumar(kannada superstar) and KamalaHassan are famous singers cum actors.
  
  surprising(to my knowledge) no one else in the entire IFM could get such a name and fame in both.

  Mu ka Muthu son of MK had a real good voice , he acted in few movies .but didnt make it big
  one famous song i remember is

  Kamal a good singer. Come on. he has good theoretical knowledge of singing, no doubt , but his vocal chords go haywire.( It is like saying ... on second thoughts forget it)

  oh! vengayam you got me wrong, i think.
  Kamal may not be so good when compared to his predecessors that i listed. those predecessors were really better than many playback singers of IFM. But you also take into account of the phrase -- " no one else in the entire IFM could get such a name and fame in both".
  
  Kamal may not be a very good play back singer, agreed, but definitely a good singer better than any other 1 or 2 songs famous heroes of IFM.
  
  It was not just his pushing nature or "Say" that gave him chance to sing many songs but also the ability to sing very decently is a major cause for the consistency of getting chances in singing.

  Kupps, Kamal sings with feeling. he understands what he sings but the voice does not remain in a single place. Just listen to Megam kottatum ( both Kamal version & SPB you 'll understand what I am trying to say.) Similarly The Aval Appadithan song Paneer Pushpangalle song. The feeling is there but imagine if the song had been sung by MSV (OOPs there I go again I hope it doesn't degenerate /digressinto MSV & IR). Get the point.I am willing to provide more examples. Success is one thing &singing is another. Again nobody seems to take on Vadivelu> I am pretty impressed wqith his ability to sing a couple of lines without pisuru in many of his movies.( In the good old days Neelu- the fat comedian used to do uccha stahi singing in many of the films he used to appear)

  i was not trying to prove kamal as a great singer.
  
  comparing SPB version with kamal version? why? no need.
  
  my point itself was FAME. Ofcourse, fame itself is not a complete yard stick. but fame doesn't come if one sings merely like actor vijay et al.
  
  Kamal's muththae muththamma was a very decent rendition, so like sundari neeyum sundaran gyaanaum (but don't compare it with spb's), he has the bhavam as you say and has the ability also more than most of the main role actors of IFM.
  
  Yes! Vadivelu is, IMHO also, a good singer. except pronounciation of few letters like zha. Let us see whether he gets fair amount of chances.

  Karthik and Kamal are definitely good singers. I remember Karthik singing a song in Pooveli, which was pretty good. Kamal has sung so many good songs, that it's hard to keep track.

  IFM? If you are talking at IFM level, don't forget greatest actor/singer was Kishore Kumar. Not to forget Amitabh Bachchan - amazing voice and pretty impressive singing for such a heavy voice (Neela aasman so gaya, tu mayke mat jayyo)

  Let us stick to TFM. Kishore was an amazing singer who could act .( Tamilil Sirgazhi & TMS also fall in this categoryi.e singers who can act ( whether well or not is another question another thread)

  Kamal may be the best.
  Gnayiru Oli malayil- my favourite.
  Vijay has a good voice too.( I liked Oh baby baby - in Kadalukku mariyathai).

  Vijay actually sucks and should refrain from singing,such fellows actually degrade the standards and give an impression that anybody could become a singer.That holds good for Silambarasan(TR's son) who had made his singing debut in RED(music:deva)

  vegayam, can you give me examples of what you mean when you say that kamal's vocal chords go haywire? i have heard several of his songs and i can say truthfully that he has unquestionably done justice to all of them. examples are engeyo thikku dhasa and peygala nambaadhe from mahanadhi. not everyone can sing these songs as well as he has. i am not suggesting that his singing abilities are exceptional but i feel there definitely is some bias behind the statement that his vocal chords go haywire.
  
  i do not intend to start a fight here, and would be very interested if you are able to substantiate your statement with concrete examples(like the exact part of a song) where his vocal chords go haywire.

  two instances readily spring to mind.
  1. Megam kottattum .where he goes up the lines are paadum vaanampaadi aaaahh ( ugh)
  2.Paneerpushpangalle gaanam paadu ( I can actually visualise kamal's nostrils flaring & contracting. Great lyrics but Kamal's voice just hops about)
  If you had seen my earlier post you'd ve understood I mhad mentioned that kamal has a good understanding & ear for music , it is may be due to lack of time for practice that the voice otthuzhaikka maatenengutthu.
  As an aside, I like Sundari neeyum as the best song he has rendered but there are many Palghatis who take offence to his Tamayalam accent. (So there)

  kamal is good -- his voice is appropriate for the movie. i have to admit, some of his songs are very horribly voiced ("kandasamy madasamy" from pammal, for one), but that's because the character is so.
  
  one song which makes me know he is a wonderful singer -- "ganga nathi" from mahanathi.
