we hv endless pathos songs ... but some stand out for their wonderful lyrics... for instance,
"En vidhi appodhey therinjirundhaaley
garbathil naaney karainjiruppeney"... - Sindu Bhairavi - 'Naanoru sindhu' - IR/Chitra/Vairamuthu.
Can we hv a discussion in which the "Soagam" element at its peak in lyrics?

Vj,
I suppose you want us to pick out the most punching lines out of soaga songs, rite?. My faves are:
1. kanneeril sandhosham naaningu parkkiren thaiyaaga illamal thalattu paadinen
un annai naan dhanae en pillai nee dhanae
idhu podhumae
From Thaalattu mari ponathe.
(After hearing this song for first time, I successfully ransacked the net the next day for the mp3 :)) thanks to Mr.STS
2. sudarodu yeriyaathu thiri pona deepam
uyir pona pinnalum udal yendu vaazhum
kanneeril sugam kaanaadho manam....
From Paadava un padalai(pathos)
3. 'Adi aathadi, nee pogum pathai enge' song has good lyrics in pallavi, cant recollect in exact order.
4. 'Pudavai athu pudhusu..Kizhinthu Azhum manasu' is a nice way of expressing sorrow, seeing the situation in 'Poguthu poguthe' song.
5. 'ammadiyo nee thaan, innum siri pillai' in Nilave vaa
6. In 'Kannaana Poomagane' there is a line which says as if drops of blood drip from a rain cloud.
(I thought SJ was the best since even without IR's music, Oorusanam has a lot of feel.....till I listened to this song from PS without a prelude :))
7. Lot of nice lines in Oru jeevan thaan un paadal thaan
In fact, it seems Vairamuthu cried while writing the 'Naan oru sindhu' song.

"Engengu Nee Sendra Podhum..." by KJY and Chitra from the movie "Ninaikka Therindha Maname". It is not an exaggeration if IR is branded a "Demi-God" of music

Okay, if i keep going I'll get depressed. Here's a cheat sheet: pick any movie with Sowkar Janagi, Saradha, Vijayakumari, you're bound to find some atrociously maudlin stuff. I'm off to do something happy now.

Listen to "enna ninaithu ennai azhaithaayO yen indha kolathai koduthaayO" from Nejil Or Aalayam. Such an emotional song penned by Kannadasan sung by PS (heart-beating) acted very well by Devika. A great sOga solo...!

Chinna thaayaval is very similar to Thenpaandi Seemayile - similar situation, similar choice of words, down-to-earth lyrics, uncomplicated tune.
And terrific effect of course!

"innoru kaigaliley... yaar yaar naanaa?
enai marandhaayaa... yaen yaen ennuyiraey"
every time i hear this song, i get a feeling that someone pulling me by my shirt and asking this question. PS/KKD/MSV at their peak.

Vj, thats a nice sense of 'karpanai' :)
Talking of lyrics being depressant, I actually find them morale-boosters when Superstar features in a pathos song! There is an insouciant air to his pathos songs and it seems he takes the situation with casual indifference and shades of practical acceptance. Just look at songs like Oru Jeevan thaan(pathos), Naan Pollaathavan, Ponaal pogattum poda, Vaanatha paathen...rajini seems to suggest 'Form is temporary, class is permanent, Just wait and see!' in most of his pathos songs :)
Anyday I'd prefer Amma Yendrazhaikaatha to Kamal's Naanaaga Naan Illai Thaaya...credit for that goes to Rajini and KJY's magnificent rendering.

"Kaadhal kondaen kanavinai valarthaen
kanmani unai naan karuthinil niraithaen
unakkey uyiraanen, ennalum enai nee maravaadhey
neeyillaamal edhu nimmadhi, needhaaney en sannidhi"
(Moondraam pirai-Kanney kalaimaaney-KKD-IR-KJY)
the same lyrics, at the climax, changes to
"Kaadhal kondaen kanavinai valarthaen
kanmani unai naan karuthinil niraithaen
unakkey uyiraanen, innalil enai nee marandhaaye
neeyillaamal edhu nimmadhi, needhaaney en sannidhi"

my favourite will be "malai pozhudhin mayakathile" from bagyalakshmi-the entire song.one of the best songs that captures the emotions of a young widow.
"kanavinil vandhavar yaar ena keten
kanavar endrar thozhi
kanavar endral avar kanavu mudindhadhum
pirindhadhu yen thozhi
ilamaiellam verum kanavu mayam
idhil maraindhadhu sila kalam
thelivum ariyadhu mudivum theriyadhu
mayangudhu edhir kaalam"
