There were two great singers who have been neglected in TFM till now. They were unique singers not fitting into any category of singers :
N.S.Krishnan and J.P.Chandrababu.
NSK was mainly a comedian singer with almost all of his songs are humorous singers. I enjoy NSK's songs very much.
But I love JPC. He is a truly great singer. Unlike NSK, JPC also has sung playback for other actors (for Sivaji in Kalyanam panniym Brammachari. Has he sung playback for anybody else ?) Nobody can bring out the pathos like he did in piRakkum podhum aLuhindrai
iRakkum podhum aLuhindrai
oru nALEnum kavalai illamal sirikka maRandhai mAnidane
What a song ! (Note his singing or azhuhindrai as aLuhindrai. His pronounciation is faulty but that does not diminish the pathos in his singing)
From that he can jump over to a totally wild Rock Rock Rock
Rock 'n' Roll
Shake Shake Shake
Shake 'n' Roll
English dance yee yo yee yo
China dance yee yo yee yo
...
He probably has sung less than a hundred songs in his career but most of his songs are great fun.
Like
- kunkuma poove konju puRave
- pamparak kaNNaLe - maNamagan thevai (a superb comedy *ing Sivaji, TRR, Bhanumathi (another great singer we have missed)
- sirippu varudhu sirippu varudhu
- thadukkathe ennai thadukkathe
- puthiyulla manidharellam
- jolly life jolly life (JPC singing for Sivaji Ganesan)
I love JPC's singing.
Is JPC a Tamilian or a Andhraite. His name sounds like a Telugu name.

Also Mahadevi had one good song by JPC(???)
The famous story about JPC..He came to know about
his newly wedded wife is IN LOVE with someother guy
and he let her go and helped them settled down.
The infamous story is about his drinking habbit and
how much trouble ha gave to Kannadasan who produced
Kavalai illAtha Manithan with JPC as hero.

He is the one who started that 'falling flat on his face' style. You could see that in Mahadevi (Bones, that song is still eluding my memory). Later Nagesh perfected it.

mukkulathoar maindhan vaazhga
............
vaazhiyavae vaazhiyavae pallaaNdu
paadungaLaen paadungaLaen pallaaNdu
Most probably his last song?

Chandrababu did sing playback from one more person - Veenai S. Balachander in "Penn". The song is "Ullasamagave Ulagatthai Alave". Most of the persons who posted something about this song had got it wrong. It is actually a wonderful song.
How come nobody talks about NSK ? My favorite is "Vignanathai Valakkap Porandi" in ???. He also has one in Chandralekha, I think. "Ainilo Pakkiriyama". People who crib about all kind of meaningless words in todays songs should hear this one. They would probably throw a fit!

In response to someone asking if Chandra babu was tamilian or telugu just wanted to clarify that he is a tamilian from south Tamilnadu,Tuticorin to be exact. He was a comedian siger who sang some very happy and merry songs. He is also know to be philosophical in his songs and was way ahead for his time. Some of his ideas did not see the light of day due to his ecenricity and drinking problems.

As a rejoinder to the response from Cruz, I wish to note, that Chandra Babu before he entered the Tamil movie world, had schooling in Colombo, Ceylon; probably at St.Josephs College. His father was affiliated to a Tamil newspaper establishment in Colombo during the British colonial period.
Quite a number of Tamilians (including journalists and musicians) from the southern regions of Tamil Nadu - Ramanathapuram, Kanniyakumari districts) found employment in the capital of colonial Ceylon. And I believe Chandra Babu's father was also one who found his way to Colombo. It's a pity that Chandra Babu's bio data is spotty.

A little more information to my previous submission. When I checked the entry in my 1974 diary, I had noted on March 9 [1974] Saturday as follows:
"In the morning, from Thinakaran (Tamil newspaper from Colombo), I learnt that comedian actor J.P.Chandra Babu, aged 42, had died yesterday. Feel very sad. Cannot believe that Babu who sang, 'Onnume Puriyale Ulagathile - Ennamo Nadakuthu - Marmamai Irukuthu' had departed."
Chandra Babu died to young at 42. What a wasted talent. His year of birth would be either 1932 or 1933. I'm back-calculating to see when he would have had his schooling in Colombo. It should be in the first half of 1940s. Thanks.
