I got hold of Taal and it is a surprisingly different and innovative album from ARR.
1.Nahin Saamne- A slow melody with some western classical influence in the interludes. Seems like a rainy situation- I did not understand the sudden introduction of horns and trumpets in the second interlude. The sitar accompaniment is quite soothing. Encouraging to see ARR bring back some W.classical sounds. Great work.
2. Kariye Naa- As mentioned earlier, this is an SDBish kind of folk song, sung surprisingly well by Sukhwinder singh. You can easily picture the hills and the greenery in the backdrop of the song situation. The variety and richness of percussion instruments is amazing.
3. Ramta Jogi- has some Spanish guitar flicks, that are quite enjoyable to listen.
4. Taal Se Taal- Good vocal input from Sukhwinder and a catchy tune. I liked the remix version better too. Looks like a sure hit.
5. The Taal title piece shows ARR's command of percussion instruments. Amazing piece.
I remain pleasantly surprised at ARR's ability to sound different in each new album and also the ease with which he seems to adapt to different styles and cultures of music. Great work overall!

S.P.Mahendran and eden,
Both your comments smack of unadulterated envy and hatred. If you actually care about music that's good then point out where, why and how you think Sangamam has failed musically. If you can't manage to do that gracefully, why step into this thread named "New Releases by ARR"?
I know why, you guys are our hecklers. Sure enough you will generate a few hecklers in some IR thread now and WOW the rest of us DFers just can't wait, really! I am once again ashamed of my race--the human race.

Well said Udaya. It would be healthy debate if the DFers could point out to the musical flaws, the pluses and minuses they perceive in a particular work, rather than making sweeping statements like the album is silly etc.

Udhaya!
Did you read my posting at all? I was never commenting on the album. If you see, I was commenting on Shashi's review; Now please read his review for song no.1 and compare with my comments! It was just a sarcastic comment on the state of affairs!
Please understand -my intention is not to malign anyone not there's any envy involved!

Hi,
Heard that ARR has attempted to change the structure of songs totally in Taal, you know, not the usual prelude-pallavi-anupallavi-bgm-charanam thing. How has he fared in this respect? I remember RD Burman giving it a shot and it did sound very novel.

Hi,
Taal is a break-away from the usual types of songs .The best is Ishq Bina(ARR,Sujatha,Anuradha Sriram,Sonu Nigam ) .Sukhwinder's singing abilities have been put to good use by ARR .the "beat of Passion" starts off with a single instrument then many more instruments are added which sounds new .Taal se taal mil gaya is superb especially the Sukwinder version with the Jathis which is a recent fad of ARR, using jathis in Jeans,Doli Sajake Rakhna,Padayappa,Sangamam and now Taal .Overall a class above the average Hindi album.
Bye

Which song by RDB are you referring to? does the song Mangta Hai Kya (from Rangeela - yes old stuff..) have the standard IFM structure?I think this is one song that went unnoticed.

Kamesh: This is entirely true, I had to keep it quiet, he was in London for the recordings. I went to the stodio too(it's owned by the guitarist from Pink Floyd). Sivamani recorded here too. My other half went with him for one of the sessions and Siv used some of his instruments!!!!! Kanika and Bala were the ones that MJ had contacted because he really liked Vandhe Matharam. ARR is a lovely guy, I must say. He's really modest and jokes a lot. I am awaiting the processing of the piccies with him and some in the studio too. Will put them up on the net when it happens. We had dinner with him twice! Sivamani is flying to Germany for the 27th. I would love to go, but Seelan and I need visas, so it may be hard!
Sangamam sounds great - the elnd of old, new, folk and Carnatic is wonderful, Nithyashree has done a wonderful job in Sowkyamaa, the Raga Maand used in a pure form after such a long time. Taal is very good, but very Northie sounding, it'll take a while to grow on me.
Kandukonden album won't be out until August/Sept time, I think. I'll have it checked.

I bought the sangamam casette. The first time, I listened, it sounded ok. For some strange reason, recent ARR albums padiyappa, kadhal dinam did not
attract me even after so many listenings, and this
one, IMO, may be too. The songs sounds so one dimensional ( a beat followed by single instrument, that too playing the tune or closely following it), and unlike ARR's past albums, the tunes are not even hummable. I guess, i started feeling the same IR monotony in early 90s, now in ARR's recent songs.

a perfectly right review. There is taal but no raag, a brash mix of diverse range of percussion... (sets rahman on another platform far away from other wasted crowded of composers.)

Are you saying that ARR has recorded Ekam Sathyam at London esp. for MJ's concert. Nice to know that MJ has heard Vande Maataram. It was a great album. Do keep us posted of the latest at yr side geetha and thanks.

Kamesh: Yes, that's right, it was recorded at The Townhouse studion in London. ARR used some local singers and MJ was also in the studio with him a few times. Apparently he's very pleased with the composition. MJ also met with Bala and Kanika and ARR in Paris regarding this. Shobana is in Paris and all artistes go to Germany for rehearsals on the 22nd - Today! MJ not only heard Vandhe Madharam but loved it so much, he contacted Kanika and Bala to use ARR.
Regarding Sangamam, the number Maargali Thingal was a lovely Sindhubairavhi and the Shankar Mahadevan number was in Behag, I believe, it has tinges of Behag and Yaman Kalyani.

Got 'Taal'. The music which is still in me is the Western Version of 'taal se taal'. Man ......aweful drums composition and lovely percussion handling.
IMO the bass was a bit high and that kinda over rided the songs. Rest of the songs.....well....I don't know whether anyone noticed this, but atleast to me, the tunes of 'Taal' and 'Sangaman' have a lot of things in common. Sometimes it makes me think, is 'Taal' the hindi version of 'Sangamam' and vice-versa. Strictly IMO.........
Cheers,
Swami.

Guys,
speaking for some IR fans, I think it is very difficult for them to listen to ARR's music. Probably their experience is similar to mine. I do like ARRs music and I like it when I am listening to it. BUt as soon as I switch back to IRs music I feel like I am at 'home'. Somehow the smooth flowing melodies of IR are not part of ARRs repertoire. Today, I listened to sangamam, I liked it okay. Then I started listening to gummipattu and NMK. Wow I am back home !!
I am sure ARR will be liked by many music fans who are not so 'fixed' in their tastes.
