Learn Tamil Through TFM

Hi all,

I have learnt lots of Tamil words through tfm, but there are so many words that I still dont know the meaning of. I would love to improve my Tamil vocabulary, but resources are limited. I was wondering if we can have a thread that helps out in this regard. People post the words they dont understand and someone who knows responds with the answer. For this to succeed the old-timers have to get involved, bcos I dont know many younger guys who know much Tamil words :)

Ex.

1. samsaaram enbathu veenai..santhosham enbathu raagam.. xxx xxx illai
I used xxx because I dont even know what he was saying. was it "salanam galadhi illai"? What does that mean?

2. En mana vaanil siragai virikkum.. from Kasi. There is a line kalakalakala vena thulli kuthikkum sinnanchiru kalaiyey.. what does kalai mean?

3. Anjanam. What does it mean? (Used in various songs)

4. Uchi vaguntheduthu pichu poo vacha kili..What does this mean?

  KP: Yes! It is 'aala mara ilai'. Aal is aala maram. Kann is singular. If you want to use 'rendu' then it should be 'kanngalendru'. The words are chosen/changed to suit the tune in films.
  Interpreter: Chithu is also used for intelligent beings in Tamil. Here it probably stands for human being.

  KP: sel is fish. 'sel vizhi' means fishlike eye. Same as Meenakshi in Sanskrit or Kayarkanni in Tamil. Selaadum means river where fish dance or play. You are welcome! Glad to be of help.

  KP: I tried to listen to the song 'Idhayam pogudhe' from the link you gave. For some reason it would not download. Neer is the respectful (plural) form of nee - nee, neer, neengal. If she addresses him with respect then neer is correct. You know that we use 'neengal', 'ungal','neer','umadhu' etc to show respect. The rest of the song should clarify this.

  Thanks a lot for that wonderful explanation! Those lines were from Bharatiyar's immortal poem "Yethanai kodi inbam vaithaay Iraiva". I'd not opted for Tamil in school but 20 yrs back used to hear this great piece sung en masse by others.
  
  KP: If you listen to most Jency songs, she always pronounces 'ga' as 'ha'(Best eg is Johnny, whose songs feature the ga syllable a number of times)

  KP: This song is from Thiruppalliezhucchi'. It has been so long, I do not remember much of it. kurugu has several meanings. It probably means calf or Kanru. It also means bird. What movie is this song from? I will listen and figure out the word. The only thiruppalliyezhuchi I remember is 'Kadhiravan kunadhisai...'.

  Raj this is a famous song from 'mella pesungaL', sung by Uma ramanan and Deepanchakravarthi(IR is the MD)
  are you sure its from'thirupaLLiezhuchi'? I have a 'thirupalliezhuchi' CD sung by MS and RJ, and i have never head this verse..it starts as 'vandhudhithaay raama nee kosalai than thirumaganaay'

  Thank you for providing the source. Now I know why it is so simple, yet written with maximum punch, while conveying a sense of awe at looking at the Grand Design!
  
  A good many of bhArathiyAr's poems are committed to my memory since I used to read/analyze them repeatedly, during my younger years. The fact that I was inseparable from a hard bound volume of "bhArathiyAr kavithaigaL" was a source of major entertainment to everybody in my house! Rather unfortunate that I don't remember anything more than the first line of this poem.
  
  I should thank you for your query - I enjoyed analyzing those two lines and riding the train of thoughts it brought in! You know, there may be "urai"s available that explain the meaning of this poem. You might want to check them out. Meanwhile, I guess it's time for me to go back to my well-worn BK book again.

  KP: As raj says it is from Thiruppalliezhuchi. There are several songs. MS probably chose a few. I remember 'Kadhiravan kunadhisai' because we used to sing it in high school. Yes, in my high school days we started the week with several songs and students took turns to sing.

  Hello All
  I really find this thread very interesting. Though a Tamizhan, my Tamizh is not all that good, as I've never formally learnt tamizh, being settled in Northern India. I've got many doubts in seemingly simple words. For starters, can you please tell me the meaning of the following words - tunbam, thoondarathu, ulaivaNai, vaseegaraa, thadavai, kalanjiyam, poruL, vellum varaikkum, naadhi, imai, poarkkaLam, kadandhu pogaradhu, pariththukoLarrathu, salangai, selvam, kuRiththarathu.
  These are words I've encountered in various songs/films and dont know the meaning of. There are many more such words, but I could recall these right now!!

  I thought a little more about this 'vaibhavam' & 'vaibhOgam'. The root 'bhava' in Sanskrit means 'to happen'. Words such as 'anubhavam', 'sambhavam', 'vaibhavam' etc.,
  are derived from this, giving different meanings. Similarly, 'bhOgam' means enjoyment and its derivatives are 'anubhOgam', 'sambhOgam', 'vaibhOgam'etc.,

  Chella: It will be easier for me if you can cite the songs/movies so that I can get the context. tunbam = distress,hurt vaseegara =charmer, thadavai = turn, time as in this time kalanjiyam = treasury, porul = meaning,money, wealth (context?) vellum varaikkum = until victory imai = eyelid, porkkalam = battle field kadandhu pogaradhu = crossing the limit or going past parithukkollarathu = snatching, stealing or confiscating salangai = ankle bells worn by dancers or cattle during pongal. selvam = wealth toondarathu = nudging or acting as a catalyst (context?) kuriththarathu -(need the song for interpretation} Hope this helps!

  KP: I attended six different high schools before I finished. I am sure it was one of the schools in Tanjore district. If I can be sure I will let you know.
  If it is iyambina then it must be calves calling their mothers in the morning or birds chirping. I could not find the song in MIO. Do you have a link?

  Chella: I left out naadhi which means someone related, someone to depend on or someone to be taken care by or someone to protect. Anadhai means orphan.

  C..V.. , kupps : I looked at all my books on carnatic compositions. Some books have 'Seethaa kalyaana vaibavame' and others have '....vaibogame'. The one by Parthasarathy on Thyagaraja's compositions has '...vaibogame'.
  Interestingly, in explaing the meaning he says 'Sethaa kalyaana vaibavame vaibavam'. At least, in his interpretation the two words mean the samething. I am not sure who changed to composition.
