I was watching an old Karthik, Suhasini movie on tv called "Agaya Gangai" which had music by IR. The first two songs were above average (Mama Mama and Pongum Agaya Gangai). The third song of the movie, "Meyga Deepam..." is a very good song and shows IR's versatility. The last song, which comes near the end of the movie had me in tears. IR has to the greatest classical composer that I have ever known. The song is called "Theyn Aruviyil" which is sung brilliantly by S.P. Balasubranium and S.Janaki - I think. I would have to rate this song as one of IR's greatest classical pieces. Have any of you guys heard of this song? Please share your opinion.

whata song it was !I have heard that song-it is one of the best classical based nummber by IR-SJ does only humming.SPB does all the singing(like the song aa aknulalo from aalapana in telugu-all SPB fans-this song is a must listen).but atrocious dancing by suhasini.pongum aagaya gangai was another good one.

Anand,
When "Thaen Aruviyil" came out, it was widely regarded as IR's answer to MSV's "Sippi irukkuthu" where the sandham humming by SJ is filled in with words by SPB. IR used the same singers too. Perhaps due to the movie's failure the song never caught on. Mu.Mehtha had penned excellent lyrics for the song as well.

Yaaro - I agree. Great Song. Suhasini's dancing was definitely UDAANCE.

Yeah anand, I remember this song very well. S.P Bala. is truly the greatest singer I have ever heard. Lyrics and the song were outstanding. This has to be one of IR's most underrated songs. The other songs in the movie are great as well. I think it was directed by one of Bharathiraja's assitants.

Is the movie itself any good?

It was Manivannan (director), I believe. Could be mistaken though. Or was it Manobala? Mmmmm...
Dev - the movie was a yawn.

Another Underrated Gem digression:
Aaradhanai has some brilliant tunes by IR. Esp. "Oru Kunguma Chengamalam Ila Mangaiyin Thanga Undal" -
SPB song SJ humming. Very memorable.

is the "Thaen Aruviyil" available in any place in the net ?
Naaz - Ceylon radio used to play "Oru kunguma Chengamalam" song very frequently......

That song thrills me even now, sabesan. It is quintessential IR. How did so many mediocre/bad films come to have such good music by IR? Sometimes, the first week of the film's tenure at the cinema (at times also the last,) was held together by nothing else but IR's magic. Then like added magic, the film disappeared without a trace! :-)

I don't believe "Then Aruviyil" is anywhere on the net. It's a shame. The song's definitely one of IR's best.

This is a great song. one of my favourites.
I have it in a videocassette called
Ilayarajas hits or something. I usually only
listen to the song and not the video ;-)

Right on. "Then Aruviyil" is a very brilliant underrated song by IR.

friends
does the song 'thaen aruviyil' starts with humming 'theem thiranana thirana'?
i think, in aanpavam ( a pandiyarajan movie), that revathi sang only the humming.
i remember, humming that afterwards for many days, much to the irritation of my friends:)

mahabs, then aruviyil was used in the BGM of aan paavam, in a particular scene where the song would be playing from a cassette player (repaired by our hero pandiyarajan)..that is when I noticed that song for the first time too :-)

1.Thein Aruviyil-SPB & SJ Lyrics:Mehta
In this song, Mehta had written originally "Nee Tholaivo , Yein Nilavo" and Raja had corrected "Yein Tholaivo, Nee Nilavo" which comes in the end of the saranam, which continues with "Mana veenai naan isaithida, Thein Aruvyil".
This was told by Mehta in an appreciation of Raja.
2."Pongum Agaya Gangai" sung by Amar is a very good number too, one of the good number which he had sung.
3."Mega Deepam, meetum naeram, ival nenjil anu raga vasantham" is also a very good number.

I watched "Aagaya Gangai" recently and thought it was pretty decent movie for its time. The songs, however, were out of this world. "Then Aruviyil" - WOW, what a fantastic song. Vintage IR. Definitely one of IR's best classical-based songs. Too bad this song is not mentioned often in IR's best. "Megha Deepam" is another wonderful song in the movie

rajiv,
sonnatha sollum killi pillai kelvi patturikkingalla. see the topic before you post.
i don't know whether this qualifies as underrated(?) but i love this IR number "Thalayai Kuniyum thamaraye" from Oru odai nathiyaagirathu. i have not heard it for quite some time now. there was this song " vizhiyile nanainthathu, ooyirile kalanthathu " which is also excellent. that was pre hype , good music IR time.

Folks,
How about the two songs from My Dear Kuttichatthan
(Chella Kuzhandaigaley and Poovaadai Kaatrey)?
They are two of the finests of IR, which, ofcourse, I cannot find it in any of our Tamil Mp3 sites.
Are they anywhere in the Net?

Sorry ram, I have tried to get these songs everywhere on the net, but can't. You might have to see the movie itself to hear these phenomenal songs. "Then Aruviyil" has to one of IR's top ten songs, in my opinion
