Hi guys,
Recently I hada a chance to go india.-madras.
i could see the dominance of ARR in the film industry. After hearing "Uyuire"
I had to give up.
Man it was a very good album.I am an ardent fan of IR.If you see for the money worth then
you can be sure of it if you buy ARR's CD's.
He has lifted our tamil music to some different height whihc nobody has done before.I am
sureIR can never come up with unique tunes and music. He is great in his own style.I have to accept this.
I could see a major problem with ARR's music--longevity.That's it.ARR's music doesn't stand for a long
time.how many of you are hearing 'chikku pukku rayile"now.
Most of songs lack that long life.Since it is different it stands top on the racks for sometime and
we tend to forget it.ARR is trying to cover all the indians and become popular and for that he is
compromising
on his music.
I knew we have beaten this topic many times but I wanted to convey that ARR has brought the downfall IR.

ARR just delivers what people like.. if all they want is a tune to hum for a few weeks then that's what he would sell... If fans really enjoy only long lasting songs, most of his songs would not have been a hit.
He is just a smart Pro...he knows what to sell.

I agree with MSK.ARR is smart enought to sell his products and make money.
Out of the so many songs he has worked hardly few of them stands separeately say "chinna chinna aasai","nila kaigirathu"Thoda thoda malaranthanna'
which has so far has better shelf life than his rest of songs.
Don't you all agree that he should concentrate on producing songs which has better long standing and at the sametime satisfy the mass.
IR was able to do that.He was able to make an instant hit and also made sure that the songs were for a quite long time.
Say after the release of "Uyire" we get a sort of old feeling for "jeans" .This happens with his every album. His next album will mask the previous one.

sashi,
Individuality of an artist is reflected by his style or his method of portraying things or his perception of a situation.
I feel ,repetitiveness does not necessarily reflect individuality.rather it reflects ur incompetence/lack of creativity.
If i listen to the BG/Instrumental version of an IR song, I can identify it with ease,it'll carry IRs stamp in it.That's inividuality.
The same situation if I face with an ARR song, i can't be sure who the MD is ,though i may include his name also in the list of "probables" along with Dr.Alban, gloria estefan, Tony braxton, Ofra hAza and others.
Scoring music following a particular style is different from repetition or copying ( IR prominently uses violin and tabla-that's his "style" ).
IMO, art shud be kinda robust to adjust itself to the current trend or it shud be such that at anytime one shud be able to enjoy it.
Ragas of Carnatic music are enjoyed by everybody in film songs (kannodu kAnbathellAm is a remarkable work-everybody enjoyed the song which is purely carnatic). It depends on how u present it. There are some forms of art which can't change over time/ which won't be good if changed to the current trend.
The MDs role is to make sure that his works are talked of even decades after he's composed them.
ARRs songs (except for very few )don't have ,what is known as longevity.
Today reggae may be popular, and hence most of his songs. u can't say what will be popular tomorrow.
The above r just my opinions.

Shankar,
I cannot agree with you more. Repetitiveness does not reflect individuality, but a lack of creativity! Wow, u know this is all the more true in the case of ARR, considering the amount of time he takes per each film/song and the Large delays between succesive releases!!! Even with so much time, he sounds repetitive. My theory is that he spends more time ENGINEERING the feel for the song, and less time concentrating on tune innovation.
I also agree with your perception of IR's music. A lot of instrumental pieces and songs carry the STAMP of Maestro and are easily distinguishable. I am not saying that there are no repetitions in IR's music, but these are spread out over the 20 years or more that he spent composing. Also, given the PROLIFIC rate at which he was composing, (close to 70 pictures a year at his PEAK), the repetitions are not significant. And just look at the way he continues to evolve!! Recent times have witnessed his forays into Western Classical music with EXCELLENT results as evidenced by AVATHARAM and GURU.
I am very skeptical about ARR's longevity at the ALARMING RATE at which he REPEATS himself :-)

Yenbaa Shankar,
When I had come down to Bangalore, I had played to you and Mr.Viswa ,some of IR's Telugu Songs , remember?
Andha songs patriyum ,avattrai kettapin ungalukku yerpatta WONDER patriyum indha threadil yeduthhu sollungal - then I think the task of making people understand IR's variety and genius and LONGEVITY will be easier.
Idhai naaney seiyyalaam - anaal, adhuvey individual karuthhaaga aagividum - idhaiyey, pudhidhaaga oruvar kettuvittu avar ippaadalgalai patri koorinaal, the effect will be better.
Awaiting your comments, please .

Madhan,
I don't have any problems talking about IR's wonderful scores in telugu (which in a matter of hours changed my opinion about Telugu songs!!!)
but this is TFM DF and hence my hesitation in posting about those wonders.I can put my views in the thread meant for TFM MDs in other languages thread.

Madhan Saar,
Vanakkam ! Andha arpudhamaana sessionai marakka mudiyumaa enna ?
The reason(s) I've refrained from commenting on the longivity of IR's songs in this thread is(are)
follows :
1. I think it is quite obvious to all here (with the exception of a few). IR in creativity ai patri vaarthagaLil solli thaan makkaLukku theriya vENduma enna ? ;-)
2. I do not want to puguthify IR here, for fear of turning it into another.... you know what !

Q: Are you satisfied with the way your career has shaped up?
A: The way it took off, it seems it was destined. Mani Ratnam, who had sworn he wouldn't sign a music director other than Ilayaraja, came to me. So my career started on a high. After that everything had to go beyond that; it pushed me to do something more. I am not a very ambitious person who says I want to do this, this and this. I think God has been very kind to me. He has given me the best.
