Happened to catch "En Jeevan Paaduthu" (starring Karthik and Saranya and direced by R. Sunderrajan) on TV a couple of days ago. The movie was alright but what completely blew me away was IR's music for this film. Underrated is what comes to mind when I heard the music to this film - very underrated. "Engirundo Azhaikyum"... sung by Lata Mangheskar(it's also sung by Mano and IR in separate versions) is the best song of the film. Wonderful interludes. "Ore Murai", sung by S.Janaki is another brilliant IR composition. "Katti Vaichako", by Malaysia Vasudevan and S. Janaki is a beautiful love song. So is "Mouname Mouname". "Kathal Vaniley" is another good song. All in all, one more movie to add to IR's long list of underrated compositions. Wonder why, however, this one didn't click with the audience. Looking at the quality of tamil movies today, "En Jeevan Paaduthu" plays out like a great film.

Anil,
When IR was in Peak, people were ready and patient to give few listenings before judging.
Now this is not the case. People want it to make a impression on first listening, otherwise they are not ready to listen to IR songs.
It may be underrated because of this.

we will watch these sorts of movies if they come in english-Our brains are prepared to suspend disbeleif if it is an english movie .A lord of rings or a harry potter film will bomb if it comes in an Indian language.I think ghost was same theme of a girl falling in love with a dead person and a love sequence from that movie was last week voted as the best romantic scene ever ahead of casablanca or titanic.
Reg EJP-I saw the movie in KG arts. The response to songs was very good. You will be surprised to know that the max audience response was for katti vachikko.although engirundho azhaikkum was a big hit my favorite is ore murai -exceptionally sung by janaki.

yaaro,
wow! u rekindled my cbe memories. i was lucky enuf to watch so many raja movies in kg complex. Unforgettable ones are salangai oli, my dear kuttichathan (3d), thooral ninnu pochu, etc. We used to go in for rs.2.90 ticket those days.

I dont think the music of this movie is underrated. Every song of this movie is popular with tamil people. If at all it is underrated, its becoz IR used to continously defeat his one album by his next album ( at the rate of one album per week in one particular year ! ).

venki,
You are supposed to have been married this week?talk about a dedicated fan!hope you had a fantastic marriage.are you posting this from kadaikanal or ooty?:-)
I saw salangai oli the frist day in KG-I was going for 3'o clock show when I met my friend coming out -he had already watched the film twice!I still remember waiting outside to book the tickets discussing the songs.I had taped the songs in telugu sagara sangamam-the tamil version came out later(vairamuthu had written all the songs-he was doing a series in gemini cinema-is it still coming?-he has written about mounamana neram. He also said that ''ilayaraja indha padathil evarukkum sikkadha sangeedha sigarangalai adaindhirukkirar'')
KG theatre has now totally gone to dogs.I was shocked when I went 6 months back. What was one of the best theatre in India is now rubbish.

revisited En jeevan paaduthu.
Engiruntho and Mouname are still evergreen.
very good violin pieces in Engiruntho song. especially the background piece which comes in the pallavi which ends the song.
mouname is a haunting melody and very well sung. so effortlessly he takes off at 'muthamazhaiye minnal kodiye varuvaai' in the saranam part. very good flow of words. who wrote this song ?

yaaro,
Naan andha Venki illai, already married with 2 children (kudumbathil kuzhappam panniraadheenga ;-)
I too remember V.muthu's series in Gemini cinema, every week he used to write abt the songs he had written recently, it used to be invariably for Raja. He had praised IR gloriously for the song Oorai therinjukiten.
KG was the first multi-cine complex at that time. The movie-going experience was very nice during those days.

'en jeevan paadudhu' was released in 1987-88 when IR was at his peak.
The tail violin piece that geeth mentioned (Latha's version of engirundho azaikkum), is it a 'counterpoint'. Can some western classical exponents confim?

We(our gang) used to love the songs of this movie. Esp the song Ore murai un darisanam brings tears to my eyes(I dunno why because I haven't seen the film, nor do I know the story. Probably the subtle sadness, longing in the tune, SJ's sweet voice.. Iam not able to pinpoint). My hubby's favourite number is Engirindo azhaikkum. I think this is based on Pahaadi raaga

If you put a yahoo search for coimbatore in yahoo groups you know how many there are?More than 500!there are a few dodgy ones ones like gays in cbe more than 120 members-also the equally dodgy cross dressers from cbe.

"En Jeevan Paaduthu" had a pretty original concept - girl (Saranya) falling in a love with a ghost (Karthik). Considering all the trash films that were coming out of the 80's along with the great ones, I think this was a pretty decent movie. And, remember, the American movie "Ghost" released in 1990 so R.Sunderrajan wasn't trying to copy off an American film. Exceptional photography by Rajarajan (I think), solid performances by Karthik and Saranya, and absolutely mind-blowing music by IR made were a part of this overlooked film . "Engirundho Azhakiyum" might be the favorite of many, but my personal favorites are "Katti Vaichako" (wonderful love song) and "Ore Murai" (S. Janaki at her peak).

yes.. en jeevan paaduthu can be remembered as one of Isaignani's master piece... There are some more underrated movies with excellent songs by Raja. I didn't remeber the name of the movie even but the songs are really excellent.. Thats a Murali Sivaranjani starrer..
Manikuyil Isaikuthadi..
Paatukullae pattirukku..
Poothathu Poonthoppu paaathu paathu..
Same thing with Naadodi Paatukaaran
Vanamellam Senbagapoo...
Aaahaya thaamarai arugil vanthathaen(Ir's voice in another enchanting duet...)

"Nadodi Paatukaran" had some good songs Bala but the movie itself was horrible. It wasn't underrated at all. Also, "Nadodi Pattukaran" songs pale in comparison to "En Jeevan Paaduthu". Infact, "En Jeevan Paduthu" had wonderful, classic songs by IR and the movie itself was a decent one by R. Sunderrajan.

Yeah, I used to love this song 'Manikuyil Isaikuthadi' - a very refreshing melody. But I dunno the movie name and haven't heard the other songs in that movie. Could somebody tell?
I feel IR's non hits are greater compositions compared to his hit ones

I completely agree with you vardhini. Some of IR's overlooked songs, like in "En Jeevan Paaduthu", are better than his popular ones.

yaaro and venkatesh,
Your postings brought back memories of cbe and esp KG complex.
Some of the movies which i can recollect are
Moondram Pirai
Puthumai Penn (AVM)
Sakalakalavallavan
Oru kaithiyin diary
Payanangall mudivathillai (i think this ran for about 192 days in Pallavi)
Engeyo ketta kural

I also saw Kaithiyin dairy after my exams got over with friends at CBE. We loved 'ABC nee vasi' and 'PonMaane Kobam eno' (Ranjini raagam , I think)

"Manikuyil Isaikuthadi" is from Thangamanasukaaran *ing Murali.
I think "Kaadhal Nilaave poove Kai meedhu serava" by Arunmozhi/UR is the overlooked song from Manikuyil. A pretty decent melody.

mythila,
Its a strange coincidence. Its the same movie at Thaanam which me and my friends/classmates went after the exams (7th or 8th semester). I think we took up almost 2 entire rows and as you said we really enjoyed the movie, its songs, radha etc.

Add "Endrum Anbudan" film songs to this underrated list (got reminded as this film too has actor Murali as lead star). Listen to 'chinnanjiru vennilavu' & 'Nilavu vandhadhu' from this movie..
