i personally hate listening to any song when it is not the original. Take Minsaara Kanavu for eg. the song strawberry kanne was just about tolerable in tamil, but in hindi it was just the worst sounding song on the planet (that is excluding the garbage that Anu malik churns out)
many nice tamil songs are transformed into horrible sounding hindi songs with few exceptions here and there mainly due to the "adjustment lyrics "
what do you think?

Of coourse, you are correct james. when i listen to kaNNALanE, i
neLinjufy. it sounds very out of place. (hi hi. nAn modhal-la
indha pAtta hindi-le kEttEn. adhAn. In fact, many
of ARR songs
I happened to listen after I came to US were in hindi and hence
their thamizh versions sound "very" alien to me.)
Regarding your point, I completely accept. Listen to some old
hindi songs and their copies/dubs in thamizh, you will feel the
same.
ciao.

I totally disagree with you. Many songs by Veda were remakes of Hindi songs. Eg. OrAyiram pArvayilE, manam ennum. Even kAthOduthAn nAn pAduvEn was a great number. Even recent Anand-Milind verisons of IR have been very big hits.
Only when it comes to dubbing, the real problem occurs. The meaning has to match the dance movement. Lip movement should synchronise to the max. extent possible. So lyrics get chewed up. These don't happen during copies or remakes.
BTW, James: I was told that 'sapnE' was a bilingual production of 'minsArak kanavu'. Rajiv Menon told in an interview that he shot all songs twice. Were we fooled?

Aravind 'kadhodhu dhan naan paaduven'is not from

'kadhodu dhan naan paaduven'

YES - We get the pride for the songs that are dubbed.
NO - Tamizh paattai kolai seiygirargale!!
(For Ex. Kathirikka Kathirikka & Thillana Thillana has been dubbed in some hindi movie sounds horrible.)

There is a difference between 'dubbing' and 'remaking'. Arvind the songs you have mentioned are not dubbed ones. Only the tune is copied from the original. In these cases only the lyricist is under the constraint of fitting the words to the tune (which is the norm nowadays). It is really amazing to see the quality of lyrics in "orayiram parvaiyilae'

I never said that Veda was the MD for veLLi vizA. That was why I did not include 'kAthOduthAn' in the first list of two songs. I know it was by Kumar. Moreover, wasn't that from the Raj Kapoor song, 'jInA yahAn marnA yahAn'? He plays a circusman in that movie.
Ravy
We are saying the same things. I have also said that those songs are not dubbed ones but remade. I wanted to that lyrics become senseless only in case of dubbing.

Sorry Arvind. But some dubbed songs are exceptions. For eg SippikkuL muthu (inspite of Vairamuthu)- pasiyeduppadhal kadhadaikkudhE; KarnaN veetilum kadhavadaikkudhE is one.
BTW I only saw the original version, so I can't say how the song fitted in the dubbed version. Probably the telugu version may have had better lyrics. One advantage of listening to songs in languages that we don't know is we can concentrate only on the tunes and not get ticked off by silly lyrics. It is hard to get good lyrics in Tamil songs these days.

Hi all,
This is Sujatha#2 here.I enjoy listening to both Hindi and Tamil songs.I rate a song in Hindi
based on lyrics only.I agree with u how much lyrics get distorted to fit into the place when a song gets dubbed.
I guess it is P.K.Mishra who writes lyrics to most of the songs dubbed into Hindi. That is,his area of specialisation is this.I have not heard of
a song in Hindi written by him which is not for a dubbed song.If U know,pl tell.
But the song 'Choti Si asha' also has good lyrics.Athavathu Vairamuthu voda azhagana kavithayai avvalava kolai pannama samaalichirikkar
appidinu naan ninaikkiren.

sorry for the digression please.
Hi sujatha#2 (why don't you sujAthA-s give a profile of yourself in
the intros to TFMDFers thread? it will help forming a mental picture
of which sujatha was talking),
the first line itself goes bonkers.
dhil hai chOtAsA meaning siRiya manathu. OOPS.
cheers,

Hi Arul!
I'll soon give an intro of me in TFMDFer's thread.I was under the impression that,it is only for senior members of TFM Club.
I think U should not go for verbatim translation of any song. Then only the meaning gets spoiled. You should see that the mood and meaning of the parent song (here,Chinna chinna aasai) are
brought out well in the child song(Choti si asha).
You should take the meaning of the song like-
Chinna manasu chinna aasai.

As far as I'm concerned (and I've discussed this
in some thread), I'm not concerned with the
lyrics of the song that much at all. As long
as the words don't go out of the way to spoil
the rhythm and melody of a song, I'm ok with it.

BTW, the TFMDFers intro is for everybody,
old and new. I'm relatively new here (about a
month or 2 months) and I feel very much at home.
