Have been listening to both for years.
Have always found MSV's film songs, background music to be more imaginative, melodic. His songs have a nice flow from the chorus to the verses into the background music and back to the verses again. Also listen to the violins and other pieces of music in the background during/when the verses are sung.
KVM seems less versalite. Admit his graamiya tunes are great (e.g. film -Thai Porandha Vazhi Porakkum) but he sounds so abrupt, raw and less complete with modern tunes. Just listen to 'Nalla Neram'(except Nee Thottal) and 'Annamittakai' songs(Onnnana Onnnana Sollu Sollu is an example).
With MSV, 'Sivakamiyim Selvan' , 'Thrisoolam', 'Ulagam Suttrum Valibhan' have great sweeping tunes, mood pieces with great feel!
Do you think so?

KVM had some great songs in Vasantha Maaligai. Of course who can forget Sankaraabharanam even thought it is not a TF.
You missed to mention Ninaithale inikkum in MSV's list. In my opinion, MSV was one generation ahead in the evolution of modern TFM compared to KVM even though they were contemporaries.

mythila,
I have to watch for your posts. Thanks a bunch for reminding me of "Indru vandha inba mayakkam", I see you lean towards the obscure as well. I have to go add this to my search list before I forget. Thanks again.

I am a great fan of MSV.
Back in South Africa we have difficulty
in obtaining material sung by him or his
concert appearances.I would be grateful
if fellow fans could assist.

To be perfectly frank, I think I enjoy MS Viswanathan's tunes more. For one, he's given more songs that I can relate to (that aren't too old), and for two MSV I think gives better orchestration, especially with the mridangam (my god, the mridanga work in his compositions puts to shame even that of Ilayaraja!!). Although, to be fair, KV Mahadevan has given some highly memorable songs too-- the best example I can think of is his score in the 60s film 'Thiruvilaiyaadal.' The songs 'Neela Selai', 'Paattum Naane' and 'Oru Naal Podhumaa' are peerless.

MSV's tunes are THE BEST. No one else brings the bhavam of the lyrics into the tune better than him. Infact, IR is no where near him in that area. And MSV always matched them with great and flowing interludes - atleast in his hay days. And that's exactly why we hum his songs even today. I doubt if anyone hums IR's songs of the 80's and 90's! I was a big fan of IR upto Raaja Paarvai/AlaigaL Oyvadillai times. During most of 80's I would call what he did by 2 words: "Sema OB!" (Or 3, if you'd want to expand OB!).
Sorry for the digression...KVM's tunes were intuitive too. But not his interludes. But the former kind of compensated for the lack of the latter. But he beats MSV when it comes to classical compositions. But this is a stronger word when I say "he beats" MSV because it was MSV who composed the immortal classical classical "Karnan". But take the songs like "Mannavan Vandaanadi" or the songs from "Saraswathi Sabatham" or "Thiruvilaiyaadal". Are they just classical songs? No! They all have such great feeling imbued along side the beauty of the classical settings. Lifeless classical compositions thara oru aaLaaladaan mudiyum...sorry I don't want to mention him again...and again, sorry for the digressions in my posting.

KVM excelled in Carnatic
MSV excelled in Mellisai
IR excelled in Melody
ARR excelled in Rythm
but SPB excelled in all of them :-)

I'd also like to add that KVM has given excellent, excellent background music to 'Thiruvilaiyaadal'; I haven't watched any other movies in which KVM scored the music though.

Apart from Karnan, there were many other magnum opus classicals from MSV. Ulagin mudhal isai- a Hindustani/Carnatic medley from Thavapudhalvan, ezhu swarangaLukkuL, sugamaana raagangaLe, maadhavi ponmayilaaL etc. etc. IR would rank a distant fourth I guess behind GR, MSV and KVM in semi-classicals/classicals area. But the 80s in general saw fewer classicals (due to the nature of the films) and a shift away from ICM. Even KVM's own Shankarabharanam was "lighter" as compared to the heavy stuff he gave us in the early 60s, a sign of the changing times.

"Karnan" was from the MSV-Ramamurthy Combo, If I am not wrong, and that's why it is rich and classic ?
"Iravum Nilavum Valarattumae; Nam Inimai Ninaivugal Thodarattumae..."
What a classic song ? Hear this song, before you get to bed. Adhula Oru Alaadhiyaana Inbam Mattrum Aaanandham. Melodious to the core !
I strongly feel, that Ramamurthy, a great violinist could have been more responsible for the classical touch than MSV.
I do not know what is magical about this MSV-Ramamurthy Combination ?
Though MSV, after his, separation from Ramamurthy, had given great songs,
MSV-Ramamurthy Songs Outlive MSV songs.
KVM is "Thirai Isai Thilagam", no doubt.
I have a great admiration for his songs and to list a few are
1. "Naayiru Enbadhu Kannaaga Thingal Enbadhu Pennaaga" - Kaakum Karangal
2. "Podhigai Malai Uchiyilae Purappadum Thendral" - Thiruvilayaadal
3. "Malargal Nanaindhana Paniyaale" - Idhaya Kamalam
4. "Unnai Kaanadha Kannum Kannalla" - Very much a moving song again from "Idhaya Kamalam"
5. "Nalam Dhaana Nalam Dhaanaa" - Thillaanaa Moganaambal
6. "Oruthi Oruvanai Ninaithu Vittaal Andha Uravukku Peyar Enna..." - Saaradha
and the last of all and my most favourite "Sathyavaan Saavithri" Medai_Koothu from "Navarathri".
Friends, I guess, the music for Navarathri is by "Thirai Isai Thilagam" KVM. Am I correct ?
"Raaja Raaja Mahaa Raaja Veera Pradhabaen Aen Vandhane...
Thanga Chariga Sela Engum Pala Palakka Thaniyaala Vandhenayyaa; Vandhu Nindru Sabaikku Vandhanam Thandhenayyaa..."
sung by TMS, PS and Krishnan.
In the Medai will be "Nadigar Thilagam", "Nadigayar Thilagam" and PD Sivam and the combination is terrific.
