In one of earliest IR's songs, Raja avargal thannai TFMikku introduce seydhu kondathai
parungaL:
Orampo Orampo Rukkumani vandi varudhu
Vangada vandiya thallungada
Vandhu inga vandhanam pannungada
Pannepuram chinnathayi peththa pulla
pichha muthu(the great IR) velaiya varandoi! (Sudhakar starrer movie-???)
Thus started Raja's raajiyam.
In "Avatharam", IR himself says that he is THE Isai Avatharam:
En patta edhuthu vutta oru sanam ellam mei marakkum
Adhu usiroda poi kalakkum(IR sings)
Pattunu nenaipathellam adhu pattaga iruppadhille
Adhu lesana vishaiyamille(SJ sings)
And then, our great IR says:
Adhukkaga thaan isai avatharama
Naan porandhennu boologam parattume
In "chinna jameen", IR sings:
Naan yaaru enakkethum theriyalaiye
Ena kEtta naan solla vazhiyillaiye
Enna indha boomi kondu vandha saami
Yaaraththan kettano
1st stanza:
Yenna peththu rasaiyyannu peru vechcha aatha thaan
PoNNa peththa sondhasaththil ponaL amma kaththa thaan
2nd stanza:
Endha naaLum eNNai koodu ottidadhu thanneeru
Ennai andha eNNai pole eNNikoLLum ivvooru
Ingirukkum pergalellam em manasa parkaLe
En kadhaiya paasamaga unnap pola ketkale
Ketkavitta thunbam ennamma hoi!
- IR thaan oru thamarai elai thaneer pola endru koorikulvadhu eththanai arpudham!
And about today's TFM, Raja says indirectly in one of his songs. Here it is,
In "Kolangal",
Tamizhan padachchu vachcha metteduthu vadakke thirudugiran
Oruththan araichchu vachcha maveduthu thirumba araichchuduran
(Note the pun in the second line)
So, undoubtedly, "Raja kaiya vachcha adhu wronga ponadhille"...

I wonder whether IR asks the lyricists to write such songs or the lyricists suck to IR by writing such songs.
Sycophancy has never done anybody any good. Same for IR.
IR's opinion about music is that music is 'Nothing but Wind' and that once you sound the seven notes music is done. Everything else is just baloney. It looks like that this view of his is valid only as long as his music is worshipped and he is the deity.
A man of IR's stature, a man who is called IsaiGnani you would think would be more level-headed. Even in his recent AV interview he ridicules ARR's music. This man's ego is extremely bloated.
BTW I was reading on the net about Carnatic music and I happened to read that many carnatic composers which includes Thyagaraja and the likes of Maharajapuram Santhanam and BMK leave signatures on their compositions. Thyagaraja uses his own name in his compositions, MSanthanam uses Maharajan and BMK uses something else.
Ego seems to be deep-rooted in the music field. (These are my opinions) : Never mind the fact that Thyagaraja was composing songs for his favourite deity Rama and was offering prayers through his songs : no one should miss tha fact that it was THYAGARAJA who was offering prayers. Why else would one leave an imprint on each of his songs ?
MSanthanam and BMK and others I would think are merely following the technique of Thyagaraja for copyrighting their songs. It makes me wonder about how saintly was Thyagaraja.
Compare this to the hundreds of anonymous sculptors from ancient times who built huge granite temples. (Temples in Halebid/Belur in Karnataka are supposedly the only temples in which the sculptors left their signatures like in Western paintings).
If my opinions are unfounded I will be happu to change them.

Padji
I beg to differ with you in one area. How do you expect a person to go level-headed when the head is heavy? It has to sway this side or the other side. No way it can remain balanced!!!Isaignani is a title bestowed upon IR by some fans like us. He wasnt born with it!! He is a genius no doubt, yet is just a human being like anyone else. To me Ego is blood, Ego is the air we suck in. There is no way you can get rid of it. I'll put the corollary!! If IR were to be saintly and realistic to the point of nurturing the values of a isagnani, he should have been wandering somewhere in the streets like a Seshadri Swamigal or Ramana!! It aint possible!!
To me the best part of a man is ego!! It brings out the good, the bad and the ugly!! If the most saintly of all, Sadguru Thyagaraja could not help but impregnate his songs with his name, what to think of IRs and the like?? No doubt, every man tries to reduce the ego factor at least a wee bit, so that he could move with the crowd!! I am reminded of a poet's viewpoint in gettin rid of ego::
" Trample on me
Dance on my head
Until this I
of mine is dead"
See, even to request the Almighty to remove the ego, you need to address yourself with the letter "I". For, your name sounds ego!!
Personally, I love IRs tendancies, movements, idiosyncracies etc.,

Actually Isaignani title was bestowed upon IR by none other than the present CM of Tamilnadu, Hon'ble Dr. Kalaignan M Karunanidhi

Interesting quotes on Mottai....
"It is a treat to watch him working. I must say that he is the
only complete music director in the film industry. He does
everything - composing, orchestration, arrangement of instru-
ments, writing notations, conducting and, in a few instances,
even sound recording and balancing of tracks. He is a master
composer and a brilliant orchestrator. His non- filmi album 'How
to name it ' stands as a testimony for my observations."
---- Flute maestro Hari Prasad Chaurasia
"This young man has achieved a hundred times more than any one
else in the profession. Only time can tell the quantum of his
achievements and his contributions. To be frank, I have a lot to
learn from this genius."
---- Composer Naushad
"He is as good as any top ranking composer in any part of the
world. His prolificity is something phenomenal. He richly
deserves both the national awards he has bagged so far."
---- Violinist L.Subramaniam

Padmanabhan - Your comment on the Vikatan Interview.
Here is how it goes:
Q: You are an authority at music. Your opinions on today's music
A: Though I can understand that you are asking me to comment on the unsteadiness of today's music, it is wrong on my part to do it. They are trying their level best with a positive attitude. You cannot distinguish the 'swaram' as good and bad. It depends on who uses them. You and the public know about that. You also know that songs have made movies popular and vice versa.
If the director does not create a sensible situation for the song, the creativity of the MD's does not manifest.
As soon as the songs start, 50 people come from nowhere, dance with the lead people and disappear into thin air. I am not blaming this. I am just pointing out the facts. Our situations are confined to love, solo and pathos. You can expect different songs everytime with the situation being same. Even the pathos songs are preferred with loud beats now.
For original text see
http://www.vikatan.com/4_7_97/ilaiya.htm
Where does he blame ARR or any other MD? He blames the directors for not creating a proper situation.

Don't you think that mottai's ego is vindicated by his monumental struggle to ascend ;eventually achieving it.
Its a rag to riches allegory .
Sure there is nothing tantamount to humility but he is not in a saintly scenario , projection is the norm , and the more he is euologized , adulated , the more indelible his cachet gets.
I believe that ego is the best thing that has happened to human beings ; I like the Ayn Rand attitude.
Of course , arrogance , is another matter . I don't
think mottai was arrogant . He was obstinate ,self-confident.
Vaani jayaram would have made a big mark in Hindi but for LAta Mangeshkar's remonstration ; after Vaani's exemplary performance in Guddi, which eventually did throw the spanner
on Vaaani from singing in Hindi. That is arrogance and I don't think that mottai had that.
Self-projection does take its tentacles a bit too far some times but as long one is aware of it there is your contraption to severe it
anytime . I believe IR is aware of it . In Vikatan ,he does not decry ARR but has
requested the Tamil Film World not to adorn the Western garb to the point where we loose our authenticity and identity. Isn't that an apt call.
Humility is a virtue that is a double-edged sword. I request you to ruminate on Indian Freedom Struggle , Indian Poetry , ACademics , in India's
History . One would find more about kaifi Azmi rather than valluvar or Bharadhiyaar.
Ramanujan was renowned throughout the world but it took so long to commemorate him , in India. Instances like these are innumerable.
This is by no means to politically or personally castigate anybodybut just to emphasize the fact that self-projection ,ego , is your handle in the ladder to ascend into recognition with the caveat that one should be aware of it.
If one musician calls the other one paltry; that is not ego , it is competition and is immanent in our nature.

Ilayaraja deserves any credit in music. Probably he is the reference for music of any kind. The words praising IR in songs can be ignored even if they were written at his will concerning his astonoshing talent. And comparing IR with any other music director is as foolish as comparing talents of Isaac Newton with that of a college student. One can at the maximum can equal his talents.
If you are an Ilayaraja's fan ignore comments comparing IR with others as a old proverb says
Yaanai paduththalum kudhirai Mattam.
(Even if elephant falls down, horse is still inferior)
If you do not like IR's music you probably may not know what a music is really. We pity you.

Hello together,
Did u hear Ilayaraja singing in the latest hit
'Kadhalukku Mariyadhai' the song
'Ayya Oodu thorandhu thaan kedakku..
Ulle vanthu Pandi podu..
Mottu kadalu moodiya kidakku..
mudinja yeduthu maale podu..'
I guess this is the second time ilayaraja is singing
(In a philosophical mood) recently after,
'Yem paatu yem paatu..' in Poomani.
What i would like to tell is ,both these
songs have brought forward some of his inner
feeling.
First one is a praise of his songs in TFM
and the second and latest one from Kathalukku
Mariyadhai says that he is still open for the Tamil
cine Industry and has got in him a lot more to offer, yet to be discovered.
What do u guys say? Am i right in finding a
inner meaning for these songs?
